I tend to focus on other people in the interviews on Timeless Leadership. Thatâs important! There are so many things to learn from other people.
But Iâve realized that being a leader isnât only about lifting other people up, itâs about being a teacher and sharing your own insights as well.
So in this episode, you get a little bit more of me than I typically put out there, as I share an episode from the frankly⊠podcast from Franco.
Itâs an important discussion that covers the background behind why I do what I do, and what I believe â including my advice to my 21-year-old self.
Iâd be interested to hear your feedback about it.

There are certain instances in life when we take our responsibilities so seriously that we swear an oath.
Where did this tradition come from? Who do we owe it to? And why are oaths necessary, anyway?
It comes down to accountability.

The second in command in any job gets neither the attention nor the respect that the chief does.
By virtue of their timing, the founders and those who came first tend to command the spotlight.
And yet, those who follow them do more than continue a legacy; they need to forge their own path and determine how to create something sustainable.
Lindsay M. Chervinsky, in her new book Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents that Forged the Republic, makes the case that without John Adamsâ wisdom and good judgment, America as we know it might not have survived.

Telling stories is a form of love.
As Neal Foard shared in this episode,
âIt helps when a leader is able to communicate to the people that work for them, that they care about them. This is the power of stories. I donât have to literally say to you I care about youâŠbecause of the stories I choose to tell, I am the type of person that cares about the fate of others.â
Neal ignites the storytelling ability in others with his course, Storyfire. But more than his course, Nealâs take on storytelling and leadership is a way of life. Itâs a way of being.
Come for the stories, stay for Nealâs three simple rules for living (I wonât spoil it for you in the notes here), and sign up to get bonus content with additional (and hilarious!) stories from Neal.

Leaders are lifelong learners. Without curiosity and a desire for self-awareness, we stagnate.
Being insatiable learners, leaders also become teachers of others, passing down the traits and skills to help the next generation of leaders achieve their potential.
But it all starts with committing to learning more, every day. In this episode, weâll identify nine characteristics of lifelong learners, ask you questions about five facets of the agile learner, and leave you with four tips to help you on a journey of lifelong learning.
This wraps up Season 4. Iâll be back with some changes in Season 5 â you wonât want to miss it.

Leadership requires care. Care that extends to the people around you, for whom leaders are responsible. But also care for the practice of leadership itself.
Ideas about this extend back to Plato, who engaged in many conversations about the responsibilities of leaders, the dangers of too much power, and considering the good of others.
Princeton professor Melissa Lane, whose book Of Rule and Office: Platoâs Ideas of the Political, joins us to explore the impact of Plato's ideas today, as we struggle with concepts of accountability and servant leadership.

Life is filled with busyness. When something or someone comes along to smooth the way and make life a little easier, weâre more than willing to give them our attention and our money.
In an attention-starved world, we look for people who make it easier for us to consume information and make decisions.
Pay attention to these curators. They care.

The web can be a complicated place. And for almost as long as it has existed, Mike McCueâs mission has been to make the content of the internet more easily accessible.
From Netscape in the 1990s to TellMe in the 2000s to Flipboard in the 2010s, Mikeâs entrepreneurial spirit has guided him, and society has been the beneficiary.
And now, with the advent of the Fediverse, Mike is at it again, helping creators move their content from walled gardens to a system that lets them share content with all audiences, regardless of platform.
Thereâs a lot to learn. Fortunately, Mike is an excellent teacher.

Often in our careers, weâre focused on our destinations â the job title, the salary, the external symbols that notch our success, and the associated reputational wealth in the eyes of those who see us.
Weâre fixated on being when we should be intent on becoming. What are we doing, enjoying, and sharing that inform who we are?
Whether itâs personal or professional, learning is the key to our growth. And in this episode, thereâs a short letter I reread to help remind me about the power of growth.
Please learn and grow with me! This timeless content is yours for free, and thereâs even more for our paid subscribers.

This is the second in our four-part series on core leadership skills.
In 1831 Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote âIt is a luxury to be understood,â and it is still a luxury in the modern day. Perhaps even more so, given the number of modes of communication and fractured attention.
Communication is at the very core of your leadership. Without it, you have nothing. Which is why working on your communication skills is so important.

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith has worked with hundreds of very high achievers throughout his career as an executive coach. And in doing so, he noticed something: happiness does not come from achievement.
So he wrote his latest book, The Earned Life, to address that. It will start you on a fresh journey that goes beyond your last achievement and helps you minimize your regrets, allowing you to live the life you were meant to live.
We are living an earned life when the choices, risks, and effort we make in each moment align with an overarching purpose in our lives, regardless of the eventual outcome.

Join us as we embark on a four-part series on core leadership skills.
Inscribed on the Temple of Apollo in the 5th century B.C., the phrase âKnow thyselfâ is considered a universal truth. So itâs appropriate that the first leadership skill weâre exploring is self-awareness.
Too many leaders are tone-deaf or ego-driven to be self-aware. And yet, itâs probably the single most important leadership skill, as it makes it possible for other skills to grow.
