Do you want to feel brighter? Maybe all you need is a little sunshine. You know, it seems that America has a growing depression problem. Psychologist John Huber says a simple lack of sunlight could be the trouble for some people.
Dr. Huber: "Getting sunlight is very significant. In fact, uh study done recently by Blue Cross Blue Shield said there was an increase in every state except for Hawaii for the percentage of depression that we have out there. It may be the main cause right there."
Mark Nuce: And he says the Seattle area is one of the worst for depression probably because it's cloudy and rainy all the time, but Dr. Huber says don't be fooled. Sunlight can't help everybody. There are lots of causes for depression.
Dr. Huber: "We experience it for different reasons. The significant loss of a loved one or something like that as well as just the neurochemical problem that people think of as the mental health issue."
Mark Nuce: And he also says,
Dr. Huber: "Being angry at the world for different things. That's one of the theories behind it. Another theory behind it is that there is disalignment of your neuro chemical transmitters in your brain serotonin, norepinephrine and or dopamine."
Mark Nuce: And he says that depression is rising fastest among American teenagers. He says if you're feeling depressed or you know a loved one who is depressed. It's time to see a mental health professional.

Kimberly Schwind from AAA Ohio brings us up-to-date on how deadly the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is statistically for teen drivers.
AAA is leading an effort to modernize Ohio’s young driver licensing system through supporting HB 293, the “Young Driver Protection Bill,” sponsored by Reps. Gary Scherer (R) and Michael Sheehy (D). The bill would make Ohio’s roads safer by giving teen drivers more experience behind the wheel through two small, but important adjustments to Ohio’s current licensing system:
Lengthening the Temporary Instruction Permit phase from six to 12 months.
Beginning supervised nighttime driving protections for novice teen drivers at 10 p.m., rather than midnight. (This is not a curfew – instead, supervised nighttime driving.)

Mark Nuce speaks with Dr. Anita Afzali from The Ohio State University Medical Center, and Dr. Ross Maltz from Nationwide Children's Hospital about step therapy, or fail first.
This is an insurance practice that requires the least expensive drug in any class to be prescribed to a patient first, even if clinicians believe a different therapy is medically in the best interest of the patient's condition.
We talk specifically to the need for Crohn's and Colitis patients in this podcast.
· What is step therapy/fail first?
· Who decides what drugs are affected by step therapy protocols?
· How does step therapy affect patients/IBD patients?
· How often do insurance plans utilize step therapy protocols?
· How long do patients have to wait/how many ‘steps’ do they have to go through until they receive the original provider-prescribed treatment?
· Is there an appropriate use for step therapy/can it actually save costs?
· How does (OH) House Bill 72 and (OH) Senate Bill 56 address step therapy?
· Does HB 72 and SB 56 implement timeframes for responses to step therapy exception requests?
· Do these bills mandate coverage for prescription drugs?
· Have other states passed similar legislation/is Congress considering any reform?

“Retirement is not about stopping…it is about redirecting”. This is a wise expression by many of the residents who live at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber. When a person has time to think, plan and do—the possibilities are endless.
In the fall of 2017, residents of Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber were offered an opportunity to take a 14-week college level class on Language Arts Methods. The instructor was C. Richele O’Connor, Wright State University Professor Emerita. The end goal of the class was to produce a short film. Through a variety of class activities and by studying the elements of short film, the students wrote and designed the plot and script of their own movie. Their class project took shape and ended with a professional filming crew shooting their script.
Ohio Living Creative Arts Academy (OLCAA)
Launched in Fall 2017, this academy has allowed the residents a greater opportunity to engage in creative thinking as well as expand their knowledge. O'Connor's course was part of this academy. We strive to help them defeat the blahs of life—boredom, loneliness, and helplessness. This program is one of many Ohio Living programs that has enabled us to help the residents be the best they can be.
O’Connor, the course instructor, comments on the class:
"As a teacher, this class has meant the world to me. The one thing I’ve loved most about teaching is that I was always learning something new: this was no exception. What these nine [stars of the film] produced knocked me off my feet each and every week. The poetry and prose were better than anything any of my graduate students ever wrote, and the improvisations were stunning. Chronologically gifted people—and I’m now one of them, as I’m a proud card-carrying member of AARP—can still learn new things, sometimes we just don’t do it as quickly as we used to."

More than 300 thousand people suffer cardiac arrest each year. Doing CPR properly can save someone’s life in these situations, but according to a recent survey, only half of Americans say they know how to perform bystander CPR.
Bystander CPR is a series of quickly delivered chest compressions to help pump a heart that has stopped beating
Here is a two-minute video from The American Red Cross, where you can learn Hands-Only CPR – so you can be the bystander who provides life-saving care until professional responders arrive.
