  • Join our host, Dr. Geraldine Kennett from La Trobe Business School, as she engages in an insightful conversation with Pam Macdonald, the founder of Broadspring Consulting.

Pam founded Broadspring Consulting to provide HR coaching, training, and consulting services. With years of experience, she shares valuable tips on attracting and retaining staff, whether you run a small business or a large corporation.

Pam discusses the importance of corporate social responsibility, emphasising that employees are drawn to businesses that make a positive impact. She highlights how strong values and purpose are crucial for attracting like-minded individuals. She gave some examples including offering volunteer opportunities and team-building exercises within the community.

Pam recommends regularly seeking employee feedback about your brand and reflecting on your organization's "Why." She also touches on the importance of being part of a business network and connecting with the community.

Pam's believes that attracting new staff from outside the region involves considering their family needs, such as employment opportunities for partners and introductions to schools or sporting clubs for their children. Recruitment is about integrating new families into the community.

The new generation values learning and expects ongoing training and development. Pam challenges us to think about traditional education institutions like Bendigo TAFE or La Trobe University, but also on-the-job training and team collaboration exercises.

Pam's view is that individuals should take control of their careers, but employers must recognise that not everyone wants to advance, and some may be content in their current roles. Communication is key to understanding your workforce.

  • Join us as our host, Kimberley Furness from OAK Magazine, sits down for an incredible conversation with The Hon. Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria.

In this episode sponsored by McKern Steel, we explore the driving force behind her decision to enter politics: her deep love for Bendigo and her determination to give a voice to the regional community. From her early aspirations of becoming a journalist to working in an electorate office discovering her love for politics and being elected at the young age of 26, Jacinta's career journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to representing and serving her community.

Throughout the conversation, Jacinta shares her belief in the importance of education and transferable skills. Jacinta highlights that women deserve to have a seat at the table in all spheres of decision-making. With Parliament now achieving a 50/50 gender balance, Jacinta emphasises the significance of diversity and the ongoing efforts to break down barriers that prevent women's participation and confidence. “You cannot be what you cannot see”.

Jacinta discusses the importance of being surrounded and always remembering her purposes and her ‘why’ when facing challenges in dealing with media and commentary. She also opens up about her personal experience, as a woman, dealing with women’s pain and endometriosis, and the important work in place through the current ‘Inquiry into Women's Pain’ survey to address the challenges faced by girls and women seeking pain care.

Despite the demands of her career, Jacinta makes a point on the importance of family support and teamwork in balancing her roles as a mother and as a leader. She highlights the invaluable role her husband plays in caring for their children, challenging societal norms, and promoting respect for men who choose to stay home with their kids.

From advocating for women's health to championing equality and inclusivity, Jacinta Allan's journey is one of resilience, compassion, and determination.

  • In our latest episode, our host, Kimberley Furness from OAK Magazine, delves into the inspiring journey of entrepreneurship with Luz Restrepo founder of Made by Many Minds.

Originally from Colombia, Luz's story is one of resilience and innovation. After studying medicine, she discovered her passion for business and communication.

Luz arrived in Australia at age 45 and her experience led her to found SisterWorks, a charity supporting migrant women, and later co-founded Migrant Women in Business Pty Ltd, empowering migrant women entrepreneurs nationwide.

Join us as Luz shares her challenges as a migrant woman in a foreign country: limited resources, a strong accent, but abundant knowledge and determination. Luz talks about the difficulty of finding a job with little to no English but feeling privileged with her professional background, she took the decision to create a job for herself and all the migrant women in the same situation. This was the beginning of Sisterworks, an obsessive woman looking for commercial, employment, and training opportunities. In 2021, Luz resigned from Sisterworks which at this point needed a manager and not an entrepreneur like her anymore.

Not wanting to depend on grants to pay bills anymore, Luz decided that her next venture would be a company and she created Migrant Women in Business within a month to support migrant women who have a product or service to sell, providing an easy-to-use Marketplace and connecting them to wholesale buyers. Luz makes it clear that the consumers' behaviour needs to change, they need to understand where the products come from and who is making it.

Luz discovered that most registered ABN in Australia and regional and rural areas are micro businesses with up to three employees and they are facing the same challenges as the migrant community including poor technology literacy. Luz saw the opportunity to help more all businesses migrant or not and turned her focus on regional Australia, with her venture Made by Many Minds Pty Ltd supporting micro-business development and creating connections.

Luz's proudest achievement is the capacity to create work, establishing a different model for migrant women to learn by doing. Her journey embodies resilience, compassion, and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Alissa Van Soest, General Manager of the Discovery Science & Technology Centre Bendigo, is a passionate advocate for women in STEM.

In this episode, Alissa shares with host Kimberley Furness, her insights on the importance of STEM education, not just as a set of subjects, but as a foundation for critical thinking, creativity, and resilience—skills crucial for jobs of the future.

Despite the growing need for STEM skills, with 75% of future jobs requiring them, Alissa highlights a concerning statistic: only 27% of the STEM workforce is female. This gap represents not only missed opportunities for women but also a wealth of untapped potential and knowledge.

Alissa discusses the "leaky pipeline" phenomenon, where girls as young as three to five begin to associate certain careers with gender, leading to a decrease in female participation in STEM fields as they grow older.

Alissa also shares the success of the Girls in STEM program at Discovery, which empowers grade six girls to explore different areas of science and become role models in their schools. The program has been instrumental in building confidence and breaking down stereotypes about who can excel in STEM.

As the General Manager of Discovery, Alissa has led significant projects, including a transition to online workshops during COVID-19 and the establishment of a new planetarium.

Alissa's story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in driving positive change for women in STEM. Her work continues to inspire the next generation of girls to explore the wonders of science and technology without limits.
