Nurse Unseen is a documentary that explores the untold history and humanity of the Filipino nurses who risked their lives on the front lines of the pandemic while being thousands of miles away from home. Director Michele Josue explains the importance of telling Filipino stories through our lens, and how she started filming before the pandemic and when the story took an unexpected turn. Then we share what it means to unpack the colonization mentality, and our mutual love for Tia Carrera in Wayne’s World.

Nurse Unseen was just picked up for distribution and will be rolling into theaters in 2025.

Anyone out there feeling burnt out? Have a full calendar, but not feeling fulfilled? Daydream about another kind of life, but not sure how to get there? You're not alone. There's a community of folks led by curiosity deep diving into their lives and filling their days with play, gratitude, push, and hustling.

That community was founded and is facilitated by Morgan Shidler, who worked in the public education system in San Francisco and Oakland until she was laid off. Finding herself at a low point, Morgan started piecing together a system that helped her reflect and find ways to connect to the things she dreamed of. That system, called Hustle & Play, is a values-based program that helps you look at how you spend time in your life and how you want to change it.

In this episode, we speak at length about the process it took Morgan to create Hustle & Play, how the community has grown, what she's learned from years of having this program and its workbook out in the world, and how Erin has used it in her own life.

Look, life is going to get harder as the new year approaches and we will need to prioritize joy in our lives. If you want to meet new people, be in community, lead with play, and reflect in meaningful ways—hop on the Hustle & Play train. You will be investing in your own growth as the system keeps trying to push us down.

Right now, there are Palestinian and Israeli people working toward peace. This work has transcended chaos, war, and hate. Frequent guest of the show, director Julie Cohen (RBG, Every Body, My Name is Pauli Murray, Julia) and new friend of the show director Mo Husseini partnered on The Path Forward to capture the work done by everyday people who want to end histories of trauma and heal through conversation and community-building.

This short documentary film seeks to amplify the voices of some of the most eloquent and inspiring voices of peace. Interweaving their moving on-stage dialogues in the U.S. and Europe with their poignant life stories, this doc creates a tapestry of demands for peace and reconciliation. The film contains no images of war, death, or campus protests. Instead, viewers will be immersed in the minds and heart-opening world of innovative thinkers finding a new way forward.

We are honored to bring you this conversation with Julie, who identifies as Jewish-American, and Mo who identifies as Palestinian-American. Their work is essential to helping save our humanity.

A conversation with Jeff Hiller is so comforting, it's just the medicine we needed in this moment. He stars in one of Bitch Talk's favorite shows, Somebody Somewhere, which has started it's third and final season on HBO/Max/whatever it's called. He shares with us his biggest dream for a future acting role, the story behind his real life obsession with Mentholatum, which scene made everyone both in front of and behind the camera cry, and a life changing tip from the show's costume designer, Tasha. And just when we thought we couldn't love him any more, we cap off the conversation off by bonding over our mutual obsession for the film Moonstruck.

Interior Chinatown is the new and exciting series on Hulu based on the novel of the same name. The story follows Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called Black & White, after he becomes witness to a crime and discovers secrets about his family's buried history. Ange sat down virtually with author/series writer Charles Yu to commiserate on how it felt to be Asian during the pandemic, the complicated relationship between immigrants and their first generation children, and their mutual love for the fine art of karaoke.

We were so excited to have director Nicholas Ma back on the show, and as you listen, you'll see exactly why. His new documentary, Leap of Faith, follows twelve diverse christian leaders as they struggle with some of today's most contentious issues. Nicholas shares his roller coaster of emotions while directing the film, his thoughts on why communication is the most important thing in a divided world, and how their vulnerability on screen has taught him how to be more vulnerable in real life.

Welcome to Flashback Friday! We're highlighting one of our favorite documentaries from the Slamdance Film Festival in 2023, Starring Jerry as Himself, which is available to watch right now, wherever you stream films.

In Starring Jerry as Himself (winner of the Slamdance Grand Jury Documentary Feature Film Award, Audience Award for Documentary Feature Film, and Acting Award), the genre lines become blurred between one part crime thriller, and one part documentary. Retiree and Chinese immigrant, Jerry Hsu, is joined by his family in retelling the story of how he was recruited by the Chinese police to be an undercover agent. We were joined by director Law Chen, Jerry, and his son/producer Jonathan Hsu, to discuss why they decided they needed to tell this story, how their family has grown closer throughout this process, and the complicated nature of filming real people playing themselves.

The Bay List is official, ya'll! And you've come to the right place to find out all about it (how it was conceived, how it was formed, who it will help, and how it will work). We sit down with writer/director/actor (and one of our favorite return guests) Rafael Casal, and film and tv producer (and creator of the original Black List), Franklin Leonard, while at a Screenwriter's Salon event in Berkeley a few months ago. And now that it's live, we can finally share how excited we are for this opportunity for writers and creative folks in the Bay Area!

Not only will you hear how Rafa and Franklin first met and how the Bay List came to be, but you'll get some screenwriting tips, hear their thoughts on what has happened to the industry since last year's strike, learn how Rafa became obsessed with horses, and find out which movie from the 90s Franklin thinks never got the respect it deserves (and the non-surprising reason why).

We're talking about one of our favorite movies of the year with director/writer Sean Wang and actor Joan Chen! DÌDI (弟弟) follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy during the last month of summer before high school begins, as he learns to skate, flirt, and love his mom. We get behind the scenes details of the first (and most intense) scene with Joan and lead actor Izaac Wang, learn why playing this role was both cathartic and redemptive for Joan, and how Sean believes the best part of filmmaking makes him a better person. Then we cap it off by celebrating both the diversity of Fremont, California (where the film is set), and the magic (and longevity) of Golfland.

This is one of our favorite movies of the year, and the interview was equally as satisfying! We sat down with director Greg Kwedar, and actors Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and Sean San Jose to discuss their beautiful film, Sing Sing. The film is based on the real life RTA (Rehabilitation Through the Arts) program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, centered around a group of inmates involved in the theater program. They share how they created a special brotherhood behind the camera, why comedy was an important aspect to the story, their emotional in person screening at Sing Sing, and Divine Eye's surprising dream role for the future.
