The sacred All Hallows Eve is only a few short days away, and is there any better movie to watch to get you in the Halloween spirit than this one? No really, we are legit asking if there’s a better movie cause the Betties have a lot of questions this time around about the so-called “iconic” film, Hocus Pocus, one being...what the heck was up with the c-r-e-e-p-y big brother little sister dynamic in this film? Not to mention, is this entire movie just about three women wanting a better skincare routine? Mercury Rx was hitting some of us pretty hard around the recording of this ep, but we trust we were not alone!

We kick off our Spooky Scary season with a 90’s cult classic! A movie that dare we say inspired the likes of Charmed, Buffy, and Sabrina, bringing the occult into the mainstream in a way that shaped us all! Because let’s be honest, witches and vampire slayers are bad AF and were basically the millennial teen's intro to feminism. There was a lot to cover in this one including some pretty dark themes, but we certainly entered our podcast circle with perfect love and perfect trust. We also collectively agreed that the pencil spinning scene is still the coolest sh*t ever.
We hope you missed us because this is our longest episode to date :)
Enjoy, and blessed be!
Trigger warning: Self harm is a theme in this film and we discuss it (briefly) on the ep around 1:59:00.
Starring: Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, Neve Campbell

Well, well well, we have reached the end of our extensive Boss Bitches season and we can safely say that was SPECTACULAR. Don’t you love how we can just say that to each other and know we’re not being conceited? 13 episodes, 13 great films, endless great times! Thanks for sticking with us throughout, we hope you had as much fun as we did on this wild ride! We end this glorious season with an age-old favorite from our childhood and hopefully yours too, the one and only Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion! If you’ve never seen it, watch it, and know that we are jealous that you are about to experience the joy of watching it for the first time. Tune in to hear us discuss this epic cult film at length as well as Jessica’s spot-on Mira Sorvino impression. Other topics include Romy and Michele fashion, the unparalleled excellence of Janeane Garofalo as Heather Mooney, and the story of our very own ten-year high school reunion (that none of us attended, lolz), you don’t wanna miss this one. In other news….SEASON FOUR is coming soon biotches!!!
Stay safe and have a Romy and Michele day!

Throughout our Boss Bitch-themed season, we have discussed badass women in many forms and narratives. However, the women in this movie went so beyond the call of duty that they put the other so called “boss bitches” to shame. Set It Off manages to display female characters who exist in a whole other realm of power, bravado, and fearlessness, while also managing to be loyal, vulnerable, tender, and often HILARIOUS, sending the three of us through the FULL range of emotion while watching. This along with its incredible story telling, iconic scenes, and star-studded-as-hell cast are just pieces of what makes this film legendary. If you haven’t seen Set It Off, treat yourself and watch it TODAY, and tune into our ep to hear us discuss this unforgettable film at length. Other subjects covered in this ep include our own experiences with petty crime, our thoughts on rich men in movies picking out clothes for women, unruly puppies, and the most recent Eurocup!
Starring: Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise, Blair Underwood

This movie has such a special place in our hearts. From the fashun to the timeless hotness of Devon Sawa, this movie gives us such a warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. In fact, this may be the most we have ever reminisced in a single episode! We also luv the classic songs on the soundtrack - Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me!!! Other topics discussed: lesbian erasure, surprise dicks, the purgatory of junior high…and a special cameo from Michael aka Mr. Kelly to explain a Simpson’s reference! Check it out!
Starring: Christina Ricci, Rosie O’Donnell, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith, Gaby Hoffman, Demi Moore, Rita Wilson

Wowzers, what a doozy this one is. First of all, #FreeBritney forever (obviously) - but also....*should* Britney be acting??? The consensus here is...this may be best left to the professionals, especially for a plot this melodramatic. We wished there were more fun dancing in this movie and less, uh, traumatic sexual violence that's just casually thrown in there. We did learn a few things along the way, like how much a cracked radiator repair cost in 2002 (as well as how ripped Justin Long was). We also enjoyed the Dan Aykroyd and Kim Cattrall cameos, even if both of them played the opposite of how we usually see them (helicopter single dad and suburban mother-of-two in Tucson, AZ). Anyway, chalk this one up to "we rewatched so you didn't have to" and enjoy the episode!

Join the Betties as they almost spend the whole podcast talking about Ted Lasso but turn it around just in time to dive into the campy, kitschiness, of this satire.
Who could forget JAWBREAKER in all its 90’s does 50’s goodness? A movie so focused on aesthetics that a few of the Betties felt they forgot about the plot. Tune in to hear us worship Pam Grier, recount personal stories of "prank kidnapping,” and argue over the significance of the Donnas. You can also expect many audible appearances from this week's special guest star, Kelly’s glass of iced wine! For all you ASMR heads out there, we got you covered!

We know this movie is a classic buuuuut we all kinda agreed that it was a hard watch...maybe because of the extreme creepiness of Christian Slater's character, or the copious amounts of bodily fluids on display. However, we also spent a good amount of time in this episode talking about food? It's confusing. On one hand, this movie is nauseating and upsetting in a lot of ways, but on the other, it would make an amazing party theme. Shoulder pads, croquet, and perms? I am IN. "Up your ziggy with a wawa brush!" Anyone else have this phrase living in their head rent-free since you saw this movie a few times as a kid? The all-star cast, clever dialogue, and the satisfying conclusion make this movie quite the hidden gem...maybe even a diamond in the rough? What was it about this movie that didn't push it into mainstream relevance? Was it too smart? Not enough teenage romance? Le sigh. The Betties had a fun time figuring this one out, and will definitely be rewatching this one again! Starring: Gaby Hoffman, Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Leigh Cook, Monica Keena, and Heather Matarazzo.

This is quite possibly the most intricate movie the Betties have reviewed. We aren’t used to it! The Joy Luck Club is based on a novel by Amy Tan and weaves together past and present to tell the amazing stories of relationships between Asian mothers and daughters. Haven’t seen it in a while? Never fear, this is a plot forward podcast as Betsy, Jessica, and Kelly walk through each mother/daughter pair’s story detail by detail. This movie made us cry and laugh and dance. Maybe the pod will make you do those things too.

Act your age not your shoe size! Cher + Winona + Ricci = the underrated glory that is MERMAIDS. We had a ball discussing this lesser known classic in all its novelty. Topics discussed include the misdiagnosis of Charlotte as "just an angsty teen,” the reality of small town life, and whether or not this particular mother daughter relationship reminds us of our relationship with our mothers in any way. Jessica thinks ten-year-old Christina Ricci stole the movie. Kelly loved it purely for Cher-value. Betsy grew up with this movie but always found it a little too close to home...which Betty do you agree with? You'll have to tune in to find out, FISHHEADS!
Starring: Cher, Winona Ryder, Christina Ricci

Take a deep breath. Wait. That’s what 2020 felt like. Now, exhale. That’s this episode. The Betties were holding their breath to review one of Terry McMillian’s masterpieces, Waiting to Exhale. And BOY did we exhale. Listen in to us completely break our podcast structure to wax poetic about the powerhouse performance of the FIREY Angela Basset, who may just need an award greater than the Golden Scrunchie (albeit the most hallowed award of all time). SOMEONE needed to recognize the performance that should have won a goddam Oscar. Not to mention the absolutely steaming hot wardrobe that had us shopping the internet for look alikes. This movie is all powerhouse females: the late great QUEEN OF THE NIGHT Whitney Houston, her majesty herself Angela Bassett, “This Christmas”’s Ma’Dere Loretta Devine, and the incredibly seductive Lela Rochon. Do some yoga, take your dog for a walk, pour yourself a glass of champagne, take a deep breath, and listen in.
Starring: Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon.

HELL NO, H2O! (A very problematic slogan for a bar, btw...the Betties do not condone dehydration.) First off: all the male hecklers in this movie need to die in hell, and all of the women need to dance on a bar together in heaven...forever. Because this movie, while perhaps not quite a cinematic masterpiece per se, made a very permanent mark on our young psyches. We also love the fact that this movie is not only based on a real bar in NYC, but based more specifically on an essay by Elizabeth Gilbert, Miss Eat Pray Love herself, who worked at the original bar in NYC! Mark my words, one day the Betties will party at Coyote Ugly. Mark. My. Words. Look, we have already proved ourselves worthy by taking shots of whiskey on air. And at least one of us has a true ‘coyote ugly’ story...tune in to hear about the lurid details! But really, once this vaccine is distributed and we can hang out again, we 100% will be Piper Perabo dancing on the bar while 3 hot women douse her with water. Our father walking in to see this spectacle? Optional. We had a very fun time recording this episode - we hope you have just as much fun listening!!!!! The blockbuster that no male studio execs or producers saw coming, because WHO in their right mind would pay to see a movie about a group of hilarious and relatable women? Answer: Only EVERYONE. This flick opened at NUMBER ONE, grossed 181 MILLION bucks, and landed at #10 on the list of highest grossing films of 1996. If that doesn’t make you blink your lips then we don’t know what will! This is one of the Betty’s all time favorite movies and discussing it for two hours did wonders for our bond. If our friendship was a plant, then First Wives Club is fertilizer from an overpriced independently owned succulent shop in Williamsburg, you get the idea! In other breaking news: Betsy realizes she’s an Annie, Jessica comes out as a Morty apologist, and Kelly has us shook with her account of the first time she watched this movie. So, grab yourself a vodka rocks, close up “le office” for the day, and feast yourself on our season three premiere why dontcha! Starring: Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, Bette Midler. What better film to enjoy after the 2020 election than one with a babe who believes in due process, and to quote Elle herself: “WE DID IT!”. We are wrapping up season two with the movie that puts the ACHIEVEMENT in our theme of Sports, Competition, and Achievement. Fun fact: this episode was recorded two weeks before the 2020 election, so please enjoy the intro which includes us collectively screaming into pillows to purge some pre-election stress, oh the memories! Anyways, this movie gave us SO much to love: pink pleather and sequins, colorful millennial MacBooks, Jennifer Coolidge as a shy nail tech, the bend and snap, hair care tips, and Luke Wilson’s earnest soul, it’s time we gave a little love back! To end, Elle Woods sacrificed so much of herself for some stupid prick who didn’t see how amazing she was, and in doing so she found her own power within and left that bozo in the dust, now who can’t relate to THAT?! Vote for Elle! Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wllson, Selma Blair. Follow us on Instagram @blockbusterbetties and send love notes to [email protected]
