Dancers after intensive training are sent off with sometimes no job or no idea of what really happens in company life. Julie Bowers is making some incredible changes to accommodate this. More about Julie below.
Julie Bowers, Executive Director and Co Creator of Grad Pro has had a successful professional dance career, joining the Royal Ballet Company in 1984 and performing works by Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan and David Bintley, alongside classics from Serenade and Penguin Cafe to Swan Lake. Having trained at Elmhurst, where she won the inaugural Paul Clarke Memorial Award, she now works to support talented dancers to achieve their potential.
After her performing career, Julie embarked upon a BA (Hons) in International History and American Studies and later completed qualifications in Project Management, to support her in her endeavours in management and leadership roles. Alongside this Julie retained her connection with the dance community, teaching and choreographing for Northern Ballet School and later as Deputy Head of Dance at the Hammond School in Chester.
As a Regional Manager for the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) she founded the Genee Dance Challenge, an RAD competition now held across the globe as a precursor for the Fonteyn International Ballet Competition. Julie joined the senior management team at bbodance in 2016 where she was also Director of Artistic Development – supporting the development of syllabi, qualifications, training initiatives for dancers and teachers and supporting the bbodance Membership. Throughout lockdown she worked tirelessly to provide online opportunities to support teachers and students including the Lockdown Challenge with Brandon Lawrence, Creativity Unlocked with David Bintley, a full CPD programme, Zoom support meetings for students and teachers, a Global Teachers Conference and adult classes to support mental health and wellbeing.
In addition to her work with Awarding Organisations Julie served on the Board at Elmhurst Ballet School assisting in the transition of the school from Camberley to Birmingham site and seeing the school flourish in their new home. Julie founded the Staffordshire Youth Ballet and continues to support them as a Patron.
Julie has a wealth of experience within the artistic industry and has spent many years developing programmes and schemes across the world to make ballet accessible whilst enhancing dancers/teachers training development.

Being inclusive and making every performer of all ethnicities feel valued and heard is paramount. It's a topic I've wanted to cover for a while and I couldn't think of a business more impactful than the Tired movement.
Tired stands for Trying to improve racial equality in dance, and it's their mission to open up communication that motivates teachers for the next generation.
This movement aims to remove the fear of discussing racism amongst peers and colleagues and to ensure that good practices within the dance industry are adhered to.
To add to the incredible work, founders Stacey and Laura created Shades dancewear.
SHADES dancewear is an inclusive UK brand that encourages dancers to embrace their ethnicity and retain their identity from the minute they step into their first dance class.
Shades is the first and only UK dancewear brand to provide four shades of skin tone dancewear across all of their products, in all child and adult sizes.
It was an absolute privilege to talk with Stacey and I'm certain you will be hooked from beginning to end.

VICKY BUTTERFLY IS A VISIONARY! SHE IS BREATHTAKING, and has had people full of emotion with her performances. I myself was so moved watching her and I'm so happy she said yes to coming on my show. Introducing one of my favourites, Classical burlesque performer, Vicky Butterfly
Vicky is the daughter of an Irish showgirl and an eccentric Viennese aristocrat, her work reflects her bohemian upbringing: notable as a real innovator, she uses contemporary technology alongside a richly decadent aesthetic and lavishly sensual showmanship, incorporating her background in theatrical design alongside training in disciplines including ballet, lyrical dance, opera and circus as well as an insatiable desire for literature and history.

An incredible chat with INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHER AND LEGND IN THE BALLET WORLD, SIR DAVID BINTLEY CBE.
Since I left the Birmingham Royal Ballet company rather abruptly, I have at times felt sad, unsure if I would ever find my peace of giving up my dream.
But the journey I'm on now gave me the courage to reach out to this magnificent man.
Sir David Bintley (CBE) has created famous ballets such as still life at the penguin cafe, Hobsons choice, Beauty and the beast, Gallentries, and Carmina Burana. We talked about David's journey, which had so many incredible stories I'd never heard.
It was wonderful to see that passion and drive really do give you that bit extra when it comes to being a successful artist.

A fan of Cabaret, Aerial or Pole dance? You are going to love this one!
Jools Trained at Central school of Ballet then went on to musicals in the West End such as the Lion King. He then got into Pole dance, very quickly competing and becoming a champion.
Wanting to combine Pole with dance, he entered the world of cabaret as an Aerialist. And my god, he's amazing!!
Jools performs at venues such as Bunga Bunga and the Phoenix Arts Club where I had the pleasure of watching Jools perform. We talk about the incredible performing arts industry from ballet to cabaret, how important it is to strip back when entering a new industry, and how to keep things fresh. We also discuss how important it is to go and watch a show and the benefits of human interaction. Jools also talks about his experience in relationships when a career such as this really does take priority.
He's remarkable, versatile and very inspirational for fellow pro performers and dancers in training of most genres.
Brace yourself, it's a good one!

It's becoming widely known that expressing your feelings through the written word can help you to heal and grow. But it's not just for when times are hard. Documenting the good as well as the bad is a great way to truly understand yourself from moment to moment; to capture your emotions like a photograph, so they don't get repressed or forgotten.
Introducing my friend of over 10 years, John Iredale. And I recorded this show remotely, as he lives in all the way in Brazil!
John has an incredible way with words. And although he has never kept a journal, he’s been writing deeply and powerfully about the landmark moments in his life since he was 14 years old.
Now 48, he says that much of his writing has love as its theme and can be categorized as a yearning for love from others and a need to earn love from himself.
We talk about the crippling effects of body dysmorphic disorder and how we might always look for the beauty in the world – no matter how imperfect it may be – and John takes us on a mini journey through his life of love so far, with poetry as his vehicle.
Along the way, we discuss the power of self-belief, the things that can be achieved if you have the courage to go your own way, and the one book that everybody should write – even if they don’t see themselves as a “writer.”
A relationship coach as well as a wordsmith, John also tells us about the addictive qualities of love, what you should always consider before you bring somebody into your life, and what you should never do when you find somebody you’re attracted to.
Finally, he leaves us with some light-hearted lines of poetry that we can send our Valentine this February 14th – though he does advise us to use them at our peril – and a wonderful piece of writing that emphasizes the themes of love that run through this podcast, and will resonate with all you creatives out there.

Body image in dance, specifically Ballet, is and has always been in issue. I know that changes are being made... but you can't rewrite history, and it has affected many dancers over the years. I had the absolute pleasure of talking about this and many different issues with former principal Dancer with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dorcas Walters!
Dorcas was one of my absolute favourites before getting into the Royal Ballet. I would watch her repeatedly and copy her on the TV all the time!
She Trained with Elmhurst school, Royal Ballet school and Merle Park.
Her career came to an abrupt and somewhat traumatic end. It was both interesting and very upsetting to hear. An 18 year career just over like that.
Dorcas has however bounced back and is now a fully qualified * Gyrotonic method instructor and talks about the benefits for dancers as well as non-dancers. She was also a Dance Fellow on The Clore Leadership Programme, * which is an arts leadership development programme, funded by the arts council and other members of the arts world. Dorcas also discusses the difficulties in finding a job in industry during the recession. An amazing chat!
