  • Does Food Addiction Exist?

    In this episode of the Conquer Food Podcast Craig sits down to discuss food addiction and whether it exists or not.

    Addiction is when a person impulsively indulges in something regardless of the negative consequence. Unfortunately, food addiction hasn't truly been recognised as a real addiction, whether that's because it hasn't been researched enough or something along with them lines, but it doesn't make it any easier to tackle when it's not truly being recognised.

    The DSM doesn't have a category for food addiction, although it's common knowledge that it's there and it's real. A factor with it not being acknowledged is that it isn't considered as serious as other addictions like alcohol and drugs and it's no physical loss to it like gambling.

    Not everyone that's obese has a food addiction and not everyone that has a food addiction is obese, however, 15% - 20% of people have 3 or more signs of food addiction compared to an overall 5% - 10% of everyone having 3 or more signs of food addiction.

    Does it matter that it's not recognised? Yes, i think it does as it's not getting get the proper research and government policies put in place in order to help battle it and allow people to become more healthy.

    Food addiction can come from other things, not just greed, greed is actually quite rare. Food addiction can occur from past trauma, unhealthy relationships, etc. and food can just become a comfort thing to help people feel better.

  • Suicidal to Inspirational Trainer | Losing 5 Stone in 12 Weeks With Chris Sharpe

    In this episode of the Conquer Food Podcast Craig interviews Chris Sharpe. Chris graduated from the Conquer Food Programme having lost 5 stone in 12 weeks, but his biggest transformation was not his shape and size.

    Chris has battled PTSD for a number of years, spent months in a psychiatric hospital and even tried to take his own life on 4 separate occasions.

    He described himself as just existing before the training course and had resigned himself to never working again despite a glowing career in the British army.

    Now, just 12 weeks later, Chris is training to become an extreme weight loss instructor at TEAM Bootcamp and on the CF Programme and has a newfound love of life.

    Craig sits down and talks about the annual 30 Days Sugar-free Challenge, as well as talking about these different types of sugars and how they can affect your body.

    It's important to know that there is no good or bad food, it just depends on the context. The context being where you are in your journey and what your goals are. There's a discussion about whether you should keep bread, grains, lagoons in your diet when you're trying to eliminate sugar from it, which is a difficult question to answer as fundamentally they're all sugars. So if you're seriously trying to cut out all sugar then it's a really easy win to drop them out your diet.

    Why would you consider quitting sugar? What are the benefits? There are typically a lot of challenges that come about at the beginning of the New Year, an example being you could run every day of January, be alcohol-free, etc. However, we feel the challenge that would give the greatest benefit would be eliminating the sugar in your diet, because sugar really is the silent killer that's causing obesity, and smashing society in general. There are such amazing benefits for cutting out sugar like your fitness becoming much greater, your sleep improves greatly, your mood gets better and all these come from a reduction in your sugar intake.

    Cutting sugar can be very tough and you can see some signs of withdrawals, but there are benefits and 4 main benefits in particular which are:
    -Increased energy
    -Improved weight management
    -Mental clarity/mood
    -Reduced inflammation

    All of these will see improvement in these things when reducing sugar.

    How to Change Emotional Eating:
    Emotional eating tends to be a habit, and like any habit can be broken. It may be hard, especially if you've been doing it for a long time, but it is possible.
    Weight problems often run in families, so the easiest way to tackle emotional eating is together as a family. You can't expect an overweight child to stop binge-eating snacks and junk food when other people in the household are eating them.

    Identify your emotional eating triggers

    Awareness
    - The first step in putting a stop to emotional eating is identifying your personal triggers. What situations, places, or feelings make you reach for the comfort of food? Most emotional eating is linked to unpleasant feelings, but it can also be triggered by positive emotions, such as rewarding yourself for achieving a goal or celebrating a holiday or happy event.

    Identifying your triggers
    - The main thing to look for would be potential triggers which could be anything from situations, places or the time of day for an example, that would make you start emotionally eating, and keep a lookout for those situations as they would massively help you stop emotionally eating.

    Remember it won't be just you that is going through this as I believe most people do, and if you need any further information or if you're struggling and need some extra help don't be afraid to get in contact!

  • Ric is from and grew up in Manchester and from a young age always loved sports, especially combat sport like boxing and martial arts as well as being a good footballer. Ric's parents pushed him towards sport at a young age to prevent him getting into trouble due to him growing up in quite a rough area, which has to lead him into the life he's got now. Ric studied sports and exercise science at Salford University, he also worked at a personal trainer for a few years, as well as head of performance team for boxing legend Ricky Hatton as well as 6 other world champion boxers!

    Craig and Ric discuss the similarities between regular people participating in low-level sport, or who are just trying get fitter and professional athletes as they are also just regular people, who share the same insecurities and same likes and dislikes, when it comes to sport and fitness, and are still normal people with normal peoples feelings and have just worked so hard to get to where they got to.

    Ric then goes onto the difference between those who are at the top of their game compared to those who are not, and it isn't natural talent that makes the difference its hard work and doing the basics well by making the correct decisions that may give you short term pain but long term satisfaction. An example of this would go straight to sleep instead of staying up a bit later cause you want to watch a new episode of something on Netflix because if you stay up then that means when you have to get up you'll get up more tired and it will either affect your performance in your training the next day or it might make you not train which means you end up suffering in the long term.

    Ric is hosting a charity boxing night, for his niece that sadly passed away at only 12 days old back in 2014. The event will consist of regular people, who have never fought before, volunteering to have a boxing fight and have 6 weeks training program. Ric has been doing this since 2015 and in this time he's raised an amazing £250,000 from his great cause!

  • How to Lose Weight & Get Fit During Lockdown 2.0

    In this episode of the Conquer Food Podcast, Craig discusses what has been happening lately as well as going over how you can maintain fitness during lockdown 2.0.

    Take a moment to look forward to yourself just before Christmas where you have put on a bit of weight during the lockdown, you've been eating unhealthier, stopped exercising and your immune system starts to weaken due to this. All this can lead to you becoming more fearful of COVID and the possibility of you getting it due to your body not being able to handle it as well as you could have if you stay fit, and this is why staying fit during this lockdown is so important.

    Here are some things Craig thinks you should bear in mind during this lockdown:

    The first thing is to set yourself a goal to achieve during this lockdown so you have something to strive for and to keep yourself motivated to eat healthily and keep exercising. These goals could be completely anything from walking a certain amount a week or burn a specific amount of calories or maybe aim to improve the amount of sleep you get, it can be absolutely anything just make sure it's specific!

    Look at your goal and create a routine to give yourself which can allow you a better chance of reaching your goal. Things that can be involved in your routine can be an earlier bedtime and an earlier wake-up time but make sure you're getting enough sleep when you eat and to make sure that you're spending quality time with your family having a good and real conversation.

    Another important thing to do is to keep things varied. Don't do the same thing you always do, whether it a walking route or the exact same workout. As once you get used to what you've been doing then you should change it otherwise you will get to a point where you'll stop improving due to your body not working hard enough.

    The final advice is to track your progress, no matter how you do it. There are loads of great apps that allow you to track your progress and how you're getting on and improving and you can even write it down in a diary of how workouts feel. Are workouts getting easier? Are you running faster? Further? How you could improve make sure you track it as it allows you to maintain motivation when you're seeing improvement, however it does take time for improvement to begin so it's important to stay motivated before the progression truly begins.

  • A Non-Runners Guide For Becoming a Runner With Running Coach Si Dicks (Focused Running)

    In this episode of the Conquer Food Podcast, Craig interviews Si Dicks who is a running coach from Reading.

    Craig and Si talk tricks and tips about running in order to help listeners learn more and get motivated about running. They also chat about some of the ultra marathons they've done all around the world and the thrilling stories and experiences that came with the events.

    Si wasn't always a good runner and tried to do a half marathon with his wife and seriously struggled! But now his very impressive runner having done ultra marathons all over the world.

    A tip for people just starting to run: Just get your running kit on!
    Don't time yourself, just go out and run every day for a week and you'll see a massive improvement by simply just getting your body used to running!

    Another tip is that you shouldn't be afraid to set goals for yourself and if there is anyone that doubts you and says you can't do it then tell them to do one! Prove people wrong and achieve the achievements you set and do that by working hard!

    For listeners getting started with running a tip would simply get walking. get the body use to be being used and it moving, just 20 minutes 2 or 3 times a week, no matter how difficult it just gets moving.

    If you're slightly advanced and looking to get yourself doing an event, Si suggests giving yourself 6 months beforehand to get training and get aerobically fit, and by doing that run slower!

    Focused running allows people to talk to somebody about running and what their goals are and how they're gonna achieve them. They also analyse the way you run and how you can improve your technique which would allow you to get faster and more efficient with your running, as well as reducing the likelihood of injury.

    3 steps to suppress food & sugar cravings:
    ◦ Step 1 - Distract
    Eat or drink something healthy - Choose foods that are predominantly protein instead of refined carbohydrates.

    ◦ Step 2 - Disrupt
    Look to 'change state' - Do something that disrupts the current state in your body like take a shower, go for a walk or do a little exercise.

    ◦ Step 3 - Delay
    Set a timer for one hour and tell yourself that for just one hour, you'll do without it.

  • In this episode of the Conquer Food Podcast, Craig Williams talks about how you can lose weight during the current COVID-19 pandemic Lockdown.

    10 Focus Points To Lose Weight Now -

    1. - Plan alternative activities to boredom eating. - What alternative activities can I do to keep me from eating: mediate, read and many more examples in the podcast.

    “I first became aware of the desire for this during my own 7-days water only fast”

    2. - Avoid emotional eating - 'Pick me up's.' - You really have to think about why you are eating - It may be that you’re depressed maybe your anxious or just bored?
    “The one number reason why we eat is not that we are hungry - its because we want to change our emotion”

    3. - Plan for the long term. - Plan for the long term, we had an opportunity to start creating good habits and some of us made some pretty bad habits. We have been doing these habits consistently. (consistency gives you results - even negative results)

    4. - Plan alternatives to snack, fast and unhealthy processed foods.

    5. - Get some sunshine. - Get out and get some sunshine instead of getting the rays from the fridge. Go for a walk in the park.

    6. - Set daily and weekly goals. - When you start to set targets and goals everything changes. These motivate you - make sure to set daily goals as well as weekly goals. Even try monthly goals and why not a yearly goal? Set as many goals as you can!

    7. - Create default meals. - Very similar to finding alternatives snacks. Set some default meals to have e.g A & B Breakfast. See Craigs Default meals here; https://youtu.be/C2o_bYM9GoE

    8. - Tackle saboteurs and recruit allies. - They want to half their guilt, it makes it more acceptable for them to continue in their same bad habits. Just talk to them - break up with saboteurs! Find people who are brimming with positivity and healthy habits. Help each other.

    9. - Double your hydration. - Dehydration is the same feeling as hunger.

    10. - Focus on quality sleep. - Get rid of caffeine! After 45 days of being caffeine-free - my sleep is just incredible.
