As I sit here in the final throes of editing my upcoming book, I’m worried what you’ll think if I don’t give you another podcast this week. That’s when I thought this is the perfect episode to re-release …
Why do other people’s opinions about you matter so much to you? Or, well, to us? (Because you’re not the only one.) Why do we need to define our self-image through others people’s eyes? Someone says you have a big nose, and suddenly, “I have a big nose.” Someone calls you stupid, and suddenly, “I’m stupid.”
You’ve lived with yourself your entire life. Shouldn’t you know who you are? Why do you let others define you?
This stops, today.
In this episode, you will learn the three science-backed reasons why other people’s opinions about you seem to matter so much. And you will get three tools to disarm these opinionated weapons people toss at you. (Don’t worry, NONE of these tools say, “Just stop caring about what others say.”)
Have you ever heard that Aristotle quote, “To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.”
You can do that. It will keep you safe. Maybe. But, if you do, I’ll give you the for-sure part right now …
If you don’t know who you are - here are two guarantees:
1. Someone’s gonna tell ya.
And,
2. That won’t be who you are or what you want to be.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:
• 3 science-backed reasons why you put so much value into what other people say.• 3 ways to change that.• Why you should NOT develop a thick skin - and how to protect yourself instead.• The important difference between self-esteem and self-worth.• How to understand your cognitive distortions (faulty wiring).• At least a couple of embarrassing (or embraceable) stories about me.• You are not the only one.
And if you feel like you don’t fit in, remember this: Maybe that’s because you’re not meant to fit in. You’re meant to stand out! You are loved.
Back next week!

Don’t think. If you’re hesitating to text - text. If you’re hesitating to call - call. If you’re hesitating to take that leap of faith - leap.
Nope. That’s not how to trick yourself into succeeding - (for the science-based explanation to that, simply listen to this episode). That’s just how all of those wildly, wealthy people, who are successful by whatever stereotypical standards of success we measure become successful.
Successful people have one stand-out commonality: they act. They do it. They do not bend over backwards for others to please them. They please their desires. They turn their desire into action.
What’s more, it’s not about how well they do something. They simply do it. You don’t need skill. You need action.
So, while today you will learn the science behind success (and failure), you will also learn a personal story of mine - because I’m going through all of this with you …
IN EPISODE 34 YOU WILL LEARN:
• The science behind success and failure.• Why pleasing people is holding you back.• When you’re most likely to give up and how to avoid that.• What is exposure and how can it help you succeed?• You are not alone.
You are loved.

We’ve had so many new people join our community here, so I thought this would be a good time to revisit one of the most-listened to episodes from this podcast.
Do you feel stuck? Well, then you are meant to be here. And my two-part conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté was meant to bring us to this place …
Now, the last question I asked Gabor was: “What’s your biggest failure?” And he told me that his greatest failure in life was himself as a parent. (By the by, many parents would probably say the same of themselves.) So I had to ask his son Daniel to talk about that. Give his perspective.
And, boy did he give it - and a whole lot more.
Daniel shares his personal stories, growth, and gives insight into the father-son best-seller, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, & Healing in a Toxic Culture. The result is an enlightening conversation about childhood trauma, narcissists, dealing with rifts in parent-adult-child relationships and sibling relationships …
And - really - all of this comes down to - getting stuck - AND unstuck - in life.
We also talk about Daniel’s work as a mental chiropractor - who helps people get unstuck, and the genesis of the two Matés’ HELLO AGAIN PROJECT, which offers a fresh start for parents and their adult children.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN
• How childhood trauma could get you stuck as an adult. Daniel and I share some deeply personal examples. (NOTE: Gabor, Daniel really loves you! And, papa, I really love you!)• Where to start when you want to get unstuck.• Your superpowers are born of a wound.• Why you’re probably looking in the wrong place to fix - or deal with - that rift with your parent or sibling.• Where to look to heal that family relationship - or to move forward.• What to do when a family member has an addiction.• You are not the only one.
Also, please make sure you subscribe and follow along with our journey on Apple or Spotify - or wherever you listen to this. I just want to help you shine brightly and use your light to help others shine as well.

On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I wish you joy. But how can I begin this day by wishing JOY?
Because I can begin this day.
Because my grandparents survived the Holocaust - without which I wouldn't be here.
Because my grandparents survived the Holocaust by finding any bits of joy they could to keep going.
Yes, my grandmother and grandfather were Holocaust survivors. But I still lost them to it. Their minds were casualties well after their bodies continued. Then, as a very young child, each of them passed within months of each other.
I never had the chance to speak to them about it, so I’ve been on a quest to speak to as many survivors as possible. Especially now that so few remain.
But imagine being able to share your experience - vividly - with your photographic memory.
Today, you’ll meet a survivor who can: Pinchas Gutter - a Holocaust survivor of 6 concentration camps.
What grips my heart even more is how Pinchas chooses to continuously relive his trauma - including in a virtual reality exhibit, where he entered the very gas chamber in which his twin sister and parents were barbarically taken.
Why?
He tells me he does this in hopes that it will help stop the spread of hate and prevent horrors for others.
It is a privilege to have Pinchas share his story with us … What’s more, he shares the secret of his survival. Hopefully, it will help you, too.
This episode is dedicated this show to my Bubby Rose and Zaidie Sander.
It’s because of them I could do it.
They were strong enough to survive the Holocaust. You're strong enough to learn about it.
Never forget. Never again.

You are not disordered. According to Dr. Jessica Taylor, you are likely one of the millions of people who have been abused and traumatized only to be diagnosed as mentally disordered. But, Dr. Jess says, these so-called disorders? They are actually completely normal reactions to the disordered situations you’ve had to endure.
Dr. Jess is a chartered psychologist with a PhD in forensic psychology - and she is turning the idea of mental illness on its head.
As she’ll explain, trauma needs to be validated and seen for what it is - without having a mental illness diagnosis attached to it.
So get ready, because everything you've been told about mental illness is about to be blown up.
And just wait ‘til you hear what she says about medicating “so-called” disorders.
Oh - and if you're into attachment theory, she turns that on its head too.
Dr. Jess has helped thousands of people through her work and as director of VictimFocus. But more than that, she is proof of the power of one.
If you’re not in the United Kingdom, maybe you haven’t heard of her - yet. But the world will … soon.
And just wait ‘til you find out how the adversity she’s overcome, including the visceral hate - from thousands, which actually ignited her career.
And now the bestselling author behind “Sexy But Psycho” and “Why Women Are Blamed For Everything” is also part of shows on Discovery and Netflix. But it’s her mission that will hopefully change yours - and the way you see yourself and others.
So get ready to share this episode with everyone you know because there is no way you can keep groundbreaking information like this to yourself.
But first, come on in and join Dr. Jess and me as we dig straight into her life, and yours - as it were. And learn about the power of one with what she's done. And the power you have.
Because as she'll tell you, there's nothing wrong with you …
IN EPISODE 31 YOU WILL LEARN:
• Why at any one time if you're distressed you could be diagnosed with at least 14 psychiatric disorders.• The confusion between mental illness and trauma • How to become trauma-informed.• The relationship between validation and self-diagnosis.• The 3 myths we believe when it comes to mental illness.• Why Dr. Jess wants a medication-free 2023 and how that can happen• How attachment theory has been misused, twisted, and dumbed-down.• What to do if you feel lonely and depressed and think you’re helpless.• Oh, and the rat experiment I mention (but forgot its name) that explains addiction? It’s called The Radical Addiction Experiment.• You are not alone.
The full video conversation of my chat with Dr. Jess will be coming soon to my YouTube Channel. Also coming soon to my YouTube Channel, the full video conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it! (The audio of that conversation can still be found in the podcast archives: Dr. Gabor Maté - Part 1 and Part 2.)

Why are we hoarding kindness? Especially when kindness brings you luck. Yes, there’s a science to kindness - and very small acts of it can bring you luck. And today, I will prove this to you.
PART 1 WITH DR. GABOR MATÉ
You see, luck doesn’t really come from manifestation, it comes from appreciation and gratitude … to others.
While this may seem like a rudimentary lesson, think about how much you don’t think about giving away your kindness.
You know that sweet-as-pie cashier at the grocery store who always greets you with a smile? Did you give them a commendation? You know that customer service worker who went out of their way to give you a better experience? Did you give them a commendation? But you don’t have time, right?
Well, what about that video you watched online that made you laugh or made you think or made you feel something at a time when it’s been hard to feel … Did you give that person a commendation - with a like? A like that takes less than a nanosecond to give.
PART 2 WITH DR. GABOR MATÉ
WHY ARE YOU HOARDING YOUR KINDNESS? WHY ARE WE HOARDING KINDNESS?
So here’s the plan for this episode: I will share a real-life, real-time, successful experiment I did on kindness - a decade-long experiment. But I won’t just tell you about this, you will get to re-live a piece of it (calm down - not all 10 years) and experience it with me.
Most importantly, I will tell you right now, the best way to head into the new year: It’s not about weight loss. It’s not about saving more money. It’s not about any resolutions.
IN EPISODE 30 YOU WILL LEARN:
• Why you have the power to create your own luck.• How a $3-of-kindness turned into too many dollars to count. • The science behind why giving (even a smile) gets you even more in return.• You are not alone.
Oh, and next week … you’ll meet someone who is disrupting the world of mental health more than most anyone on the planet.
So, please make sure to follow the podcast on Apple or Spotify - or wherever you listen to this. Because you won’t want to miss Dr. Jessica Taylor - especially if you’ve been diagnosed with any mental health “disorder.”

You are about to meet the most joyful person on the planet. He will help you find joy, hope, and positivity in darkness and in loneliness. And, yes, there is a science behind joy and its healing properties.
So … He lives near the North Pole. He’s always jolly. And, no, he’s not Santa Claus. But like Santa, he brings joy to many people around the world. In fact, he’s known for it.
If you’re one of the millions of people who have watched his videos, you’ve seen this joy-drop of a human dancing Bhangra … in the Yukon wilderness … in Northern Canada … on the other side of the world from where he grew up - a small Punjabi farming village.
His name is Gurdeep Pandher. And he made a decision on March 11, 2020 - a decision that changed his life - and the lives of strangers across the globe. Millions and millions - and, well, tens of millions of video views later, he’s on a mission to heal the world with the power - and magic - of dance.
But more than that, Gurdeep is healing wounds of division and bringing people from different communities, cultures, and backgrounds together.
Look, you need more joy. I need more joy. We all need more joy.
Joy isn’t just some flippant, fleeting thing. Joy is essential to your well-being. And that’s not from the Dahlia National Research Institute of Dahlia Research. That’s science.
Studies show that joyful people have less chance of heart attack, maintain healthier blood pressure, and lower cholesterol. Plus, research proves joy boosts your immune system, fights stress and pain, promotes healing, and improves your chance of living a longer life.
IN EPISODE 28, IN GURDEEP’S MASTERCLASS, YOU WILL LEARN:
• The (scientifically proven) healing power of joy and the magic of Bhangra• What to do when you have lost all hope • How being low and lonely can help you grow• Finding joy in grief and darkness• Ways to smooth over fractures and divisions between races and cultures• How you’ll never find joy in perfection - but you will find joy in mistakes• The power of leading a more minimalist life• Gurdeep's personal story of overcoming many challenges - using the power of joy• You are not alone

This is one of the lowest times the world has ever faced. So many people are struggling. But while some people turn to hope to get through, I wanted to offer you real help. Help that is backed by science.

Let’s face it, most of us are just getting by, going through the motions, just trying to get through one day at time. That’s not thriving. That’s not even surviving. That’s subsisting. That stops today.
Not only will you get two key and immediate takeaways from this conversation. But when you hear the true stories coming your way, your entire perspective on environment and its role in your life will make a 180.
IN EPISODE 27 YOU WILL LEARN THESE SCIENCE-BACKED LESSONS:

Narcissism. One of the hottest buzzwords over the past couple of decades. And since so many people are talking about, I thought why not get one of the world’s leading experts on the topic to help you understand it better: Dr. W. Keith Campbell.
I’ve heard from so many people who have been hurt by a narcissist: whether a family member, a partner, a friend, a boss .... I’ve been hurt by one too. And you’ll often hear people toss the word around so readily. But today, we explore the real science behind narcissism with a person who literally wrote the book on it.
Plus, hear him weigh in on a viral video - watched by millions - in which I ask Dr. Gabor Maté, “How can you have two people raised by the same parents, in the same way in the same way … one becomes a narcissist, one doesn’t?”
Dr. Campbell is a social psychologist and the author of several books on the topic - including The New Science of Narcissism - and The Narcissism Epidemic. He’s also a professor of psychology at the University of Georgia.
Oh! And if you like personality assessment tests, he gives you an excellent one. (Of course, it’s science-backed.)
IN EPISODE 26 YOU WILL LEARN:
• The “recipe” that creates a narcissist and narcissism.• The spectrum of narcissism vs. narcissistic personality disorder.• The difference between vulnerable and grandiose narcissism.• Can you become a narcissist as an adult?• How to spot a narcissist, and how to heal from one.• From family to romantic relationships, how to deal with the narcissist in your life.• What you need to understand about narcissistic rage.• What can make you their target.• Social media and how it breeds and rewards narcissism. • How much can a narcissist really change?• The Big-5 Personality Test: OCEAN. What’s your personality? • You are not alone.
P.S. In an upcoming episode you will meet the most joyful person on the planet - who will teach you how to find joy in darkness. So it’s your last day on Planet Earth, and I introduce you to the person whom you’ve always wanted to meet. You.
Well, the person you would have become had you done all of those things that you always wanted to do. But didn’t…
What a pang in the stomach, right. What does this tell you?
You’re not stressed about all of those things you have to do. You’re stressed out about all of those things that you haven’t done. That you still haven’t done. That you have yet to do.
You don’t need another gadget, another shirt, or another 56-cyber-deals-you-have-to-order-right-now because they’re life-changing products. What you really need are goals. What you really need is purpose. What you really need, you’re about to get …
So, today you’ll learn the 10 things you really need in life - based on the top-5 regrets people shared before they died.
This will come with science-backed evidence - but most importantly, it will come from my heart. Because I had that moment where I almost died, (which I shared with you in Episode 1). And those top regrets flashed through my mind too and have changed my life for the better.
So how do you avoid those top-5 regrets? By embracing these 10 things you really need in life … and not one of them is more stuff.
IN EPISODE 25 YOU WILL LEARN:
• The top-5 regrets of people in their last days.• 10 things you can start right now to avoid those regrets.• Self-compassion.• Why you try to fill the “happiness void” with all of the wrong things, according to science.
And you know how people say, money can’t buy happiness? Of course it can! We both know that. But you’re not looking for happiness. You’re looking for fulfilment. You see, advertisers have convinced you that you’re looking for happiness.
This is not just a list about saving you money - at a time when you really, REALLY, need to save money. This is a list about saving regrets. This is a list about rescuing your potential. This is the list you’ve been trying to fill - with all of the wrong things.
Before you even start listening, share this episode with someone you care about. It’s one of the best gifts you can give - and the cheapest.

Imagine it’s your last day on Earth, and you get to meet the person you would have become - had you not procrastinated …
Have you ever felt as if you’re stuck in a cycle of overthinking and procrastination, and no matter what you do you just can’t break free? Watch all of that change today.
There’s actually a science as to why you procrastinate, which also means there’s a science to help you stop that procrastination.
By the time you and I finish our conversation, you’ll be equipped with the 6 things you need to know to help you stop - or go, as it were. And as someone who has been stuck in that stall (stories to come this episode) - I can tell you, it’s remarkable how these small fixes (one of them incredibly small) can change your life in big ways.
IN EPISODE 24 YOU WILL LEARN:
• The root cause of procrastination.• How telling yourself to “just do it” just won’t work.• The negative effects of procrastination on your health.• The 4 science-backed ways to overcome procrastinating.• A true story that will shift your entire perspective on overthinking.• You are not alone.
It’s funny, everyone seems to think procrastination is about time mismanagement. It’s not; it’s about a mismanagement of your emotions. And it’s not just you.
Research from Harvard Business Law shows at least 95% of people procrastinate. The other *5% are simply procrastinating on the confession. (*That 5% stat is from The Dahlia National Research Institute Of Dahlia Research.)

Can you imagine healing from childhood trauma and all of your traumas - openly - and in front of the world? Today, #1 bestselling author and advocate Amanda Jetté Knox and I sit down down for a very raw conversation - with a story unlike anything you’ve heard before: From homelessness to international success, to their ever-changing family, to wanting to take their own life, while helping to inspire others and fighting for their lives … Amanda shares it all.
Their bestseller Love Lives Here: A story of Thriving in a Transgender Family is a memoir. But it’s also more than that …
You see, Amanda’s life changed when their middle child came out as transgender. Then, their spouse came out as trans. You’ll hear those stories - inspirational stories of acceptance and what’s possible when you lead with love.
And while they are getting set to release their next book, Amanda is working through their childhood trauma and her traumas in front of the world.
But before you meet Amanda, not all stories of healing are shared in front of the world, nor are all successes. So there’s an important - but unknown story - that you need to know about and will also learn about in this episode.
IN EPISODE 23 YOU WILL LEARN:
• Grit. Starting over - and over again - in front of a worldwide audience.• How Amanda has dealt with depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, and suicidal ideation, in a very public way.• What happens when your child tells you they’re trans? What happens when your spouse tells you they’re trans? How do you move forward?• Why Amanda needs security at public events now.• You will also learn a story of someone else, who overcame childhood trauma and achieved great successes - a story that if not for this podcast would never make the public eye - but should.• You are not alone. (But you learn that every episode.)
P.S. You’ve asked for an expert on narcissism and you shall receive! A world-leading expert on narcissism, Dr. W. Keith Campbell, is set to join on an upcoming episode. And if you missed my two-part conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté - the world’s leading expert in trauma and addictions - that is definitely required listening.
IN EPISODE 22 YOU WILL LEARN:
• The 3 science-backed reasons why you put so much value into what other people say.• The 3 ways to change that.• Why you should NOT develop a thick skin - and what to do to protect yourself instead.• The difference between self-esteem and self-worth - which will change your entire perception of your value.• How to understand your cognitive distortions (faulty wiring).• At least a couple of embarrassing stories about me - or as I prefer to call them, embraceable stories - because I go through this too. • You are not the only one. (This is something you learn every episode.)
And if you feel like you don’t fit in, remember this: Maybe that’s because you’re not meant to fit in. You’re meant to stand out!
Look, when conformity is the cure for social anxiety - conformity is also the cause of it. Don’t let it trap you in its web - or World Wide Web, as it were.

Do you feel stuck? Well, then you are meant to be here. And my two-part conversation with Dr. Gabor Maté was meant to bring us to this place …
The last question I asked Gabor Maté in our two-part conversation was: “What’s your biggest failure?” And he told me that his greatest failure in life was himself as a parent. So I had to ask his son Daniel to talk about that. Give his perspective.
And boy did he give it - and a whole lot more.
Daniel shares his personal stories, growth, and insight into the father-son best-seller, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, & Healing in a Toxic Culture. The result is an enlightening conversation about childhood trauma, narcissism, narcissists, dealing with rifts in parent-adult-child relationships and sibling relationships …
And - really - all of this comes down to - getting stuck - AND unstuck - in life.
We also talk about the genesis of the father and son’s HELLO AGAIN PROJECT, which offers a fresh start for parents and their adult children.
IN EPISODE 20 YOU WILL LEARN:
• How childhood trauma could get you stuck as an adult. Daniel and I share some personal examples. (Also, Gabor, Daniel really loves you! And, papa, I really love you!)• Where to start when you want to get unstuck - and lead a happier more fulfilled life.• Why you’re probably looking in the wrong place to fix - or deal with - that rift with your parent or sibling.• Where to look to heal that family relationship - or to move forward.• What to do when a family member has an addiction.• You are not the only one.
And listen, getting used to something shouldn’t be the reason you don’t do something good and allow yourself to stay stuck. If you’re not happy, instead of moving away from everything and confining yourself to your tight little space, why don’t you move TOWARDS something?

What is disordered eating? And do you have it? Great question. I’d love to tell to you … but I can only tell you what it is. It’s up to you to recognize your own experience. But I will tell you this …
Life doesn’t begin 5 pounds from now.
Life doesn’t begin after that “one last slice of cake.”
Life doesn’t begin when you fit those old jeans again - that you’ve refused to give away partly because you want to fit them and partly because they prove that you once somehow suctioned your body into them. (And yes, that last statement may sort of be referring to those jeans I’ve had for too many years to count.)
But I know I’m not the only one. But you know what? Many people don’t they’re not alone.
Now, eating disorders are clinically diagnosable conditions, so they are often more recognizable. Disordered eating can be more subtle, more difficult to recognize, and more challenging to address. Also, disordered eating can contribute to the development and onset of an eating disorder. So this conversation is an important little eye-opener - or mind-opener, as it were.
Eating disorders, disordered eating, negative body image …
I’m telling you right now, we have the saddest generation. Posting all of the happiest pictures. Look at me! Look at me! Everyone’s looking at these pictures. And how many people really feel seen? Because they are not even showing who they really are.
Yes, I’ve dealt with disordered eating. Yes, I deal with body image issues. Yes, I am a human.
I have run programs for girls to help them deconstruct the fake societal construct of beauty to redefine what beauty means to each of them. I have experience.
For the past 10 years, every time I’ve done a show on anything eating or body image related, I’ve received messages from countless people who have always thought they are the only emotional eater, the only person who sees food as numbers, the only person who chews and spits, the only person with an addiction to exercise, or an addiction to healthy eating … or whatever disordered eating lifestyle they lead.
Interestingly, I’ve probably been most overwhelmed by the number of messages from men struggling with emotional eating.
But I am not the voice of every person who has ever dealt with eating or body image issues. I can only talk about my own experience and my experience working with people who have had them - and the many brave people who have shared their stories with me.
Look, this little chateroo is not even about solving anything. Especially in a podcast episode. This is not Full House. Everything doesn’t get resolved in an episode. This is about you not being alone.
And yes. As usual, this will include at least one embarrassing story about myself. Well. Some may call it embarrassing. I call it embraceable. It’s ok. You can still laugh at it. I support that.

What is carcinophobia and do you have it? Rare question. Common problem. Here’s the short answer: It is a cancer and you may have it. But it’s not The Big C. It’s fear. Specifically, the fear of cancer. Yes, it’s an actual diagnosis. And it’s so exhausting. Every symptom you have - and every symptom you don’t have - become cancer in your mind. After our chat with Dr. Gabor Maté the other week, many more people joined our Live And Help Live community in search of healing. Well, today, we continue down that path.
“I don’t sleep at night, panicking over my fear of cancer.” “How do I stop the fear of cancer from ruining my life?” “I swear I feel the cancer - even though doctors keep telling me there’s nothing there.” These are just some of the thoughts people have confided in me - usually after I tell them how I grew up with this phobia. Yes, I had an irrational fear of cancer for a huge chunk of my life …
Interestingly, I became less afraid when I recently - privately - went through a couple of real cancer scares - scares that spanned months. Stories I have kept secret, until now. Actually, I will share a few of my deepest, darkest secrets in this episode. Because sharing them takes the darkness away. And we all need more light in our lives.
And listen, just because a doctor feels something unusual, it doesn’t mean you have cancer. Still, it can mean you have fear, which like cancer can metastasize. I mean, think about this: If you have, say, breast cancer, when caught early, it has a cure rate higher than 93%. But how do you cure fear?
We need to talk about carcinophobia. The fear people are so afraid to discuss that most don’t even know it’s a common phobia. Why do you have it? What are the symptoms? What can you do to fight it? If you suffer, there’s help. And you’ve now found it. You are not alone.
