hi all. back with a surprise episode for the new year. i go on a long monologue about acting and performing music. i hope it rings true to ya'll in some way, because it helped me crystallize a lot of ideas i was having about performing, and how i always felt uncomfortable with it. and i truly think acknowledging all the roles a person can play will help develop some empathy for our beloved performers, be they of any artistic medium. hope ya'll are having a solid 2019 so far. xoxo talk to you soon.

happy birthday to us! this episode is releasing exactly 1 year after our first show, bad choices pt. 1--go listen to it. and as a birthday prezzy to us, subscribe to our show on someone else's phone for us. i went to the apple store last week and subscribed to us on a lot of different display phones. it was a fun time. i hope they don't unsubscribe or wipe their phones every night. anyhoo.

in which dhr dissects madonna's "like a prayer" and wonders why it's just so goddamn good. this is the kinda song that makes u wanna pull grandpa off his deathbed and get him to dance with too!! we talk the use of slow introductions in songs, cellular melodic motives, gospel choir, the throwing off of sexual repression in favor of having a party, and how this song coming on in any situation gives the potential for a musical song and dance number to start.

we dare each other to listen to a stupid ass song and wind up getting stuck in margaritaville for almost 2 hours. what an intense song about alcoholism and giving up. one of us had never heard it b4 and it kinda blew their mind. shout outs to jimmy for making an entire industry out of one stupid song. go buy some of his key lime pie filling mix.
but all in all a very cohesive song that is almost respectably self-aware.
oh and then we go on a tangent and trash country music for a long time. our bad. let us know why you like country. or jimmy buffet. idk. we'll be back.

what is being intentional in music? does an improvisation or freestyle tossed off in 2 minutes have just as much going for it as a string quartet that had months of work poured into it?
we discuss different genres of music, and the role that improvisation vs. intention plays in each of them, focusing a lot on hip-hop as compared to classical music. as usual. what are the pros of obsessing? we don't know. but we have fun talking about it. it's more interesting than this description, i promise.

spring break has ended and the boys are back at it. we do a hit disciple this week on a psychedelic golden oldie from 1980's "underwater moonlight" called kingdom of love.
we also get incredibly hung up on this one guitar riff for like 20 minutes that for the life of us we can't write down. so enjoy that part. we also talk about how blues guitar is dope. and how lyrics can make or break a song.

music competitions tend to be where classical musicians lose interest in playing anymore. but they also are the so-called place where classical musicians get their big break. but they are also just inherently stupid and misguided. so what's the big deal? are music competitions just misguided nationalism? are they for parents? for teachers? they sure don't seem to be for music. we talk our own experiences and then break down some misconceptions about classical music competitions, where they started, and what they got wrong.

we talk about an old favorite song by leonard cohen called "suzanne." and we get really confused by the weird ass switch from 6/8 to 4/4 in the beginning of the song. and then we theorize about pronouns in music and what they mean in this day and age. what happened to the chorus that makes up our chorus? who is you and who am i in a love song? do i really love any of you? does anyone really love me?
