  • Every deer hunter has dreamed of owning their own hunting camp. Most camps or hunting cabins are usually weathered, or shifted, or rotted. Not to worry though, the Maine Cabin Masters can turn a teardown into an almost-new deer camp palace in just a few months. We hash out the details of finding and rebuilding a deer cabin with Dixie and Jedi, (aka Matt Dix and Jared Baker of the show Maine Cabin Masters. And of course, we talk about Matt and Jared's Maine deer hunting adventures.

  • California Game Warden Lt. John Nores, now retired, has been at the forefront and on the front lines of an under-reported battle against thousands of drug cartel members who grow toxic marijuana on U.S. soil. Not only does black market marijuana cultivation undermine legitimate growers, but it endangers lives and wildlife populations unimagined. Jay breaks down the book Hidden War with Author John Nores and talks deer hunting in John's home state of Montana.

  • This weeks show is an interview with Ted Bright. Ted is as you might expect a diehard deer hunter who likes prefers the a mobile hunt over a fixed stand. Ted uses a sling or harness to maneuver from tree to tree based on when and where he's finding active big buck sign. Ted is also an archer and seems to prefer this over anything. Something has "clicked" for Ted and says that he just seems to be in tune with finding hunting opportunity and capitalizing on those more than he's ever done before. We go over Ted's approach, hunts from previous years, shooting from muscle memory, and the techniques that he uses to identify a good spot to hunt and how to gain landowner permission. OUR SPONSORS:

  • Anyone who has hunted mature bucks has a secret or two about how to hunt them. Quite frankly, it's the foundation of this show. And then Doug Whitcomb said he'd figured something out. I was all ears. After all, he and a few people in his circle of hunters, were killing mature New Hampshire bucks almost yearly without tracking snow. Not an easy task. Doug shares how he goes about his secret for hunting mature NH bucks without snow in the episode.

  • Despite being quarantined, I can't imagine any sportsman sitting at home doing nothing. It's just not in our blood. Let's face it, our playground is the great outdoors and we practice lots of social distancing without the restrictions of COVID-19. But, there may be some other things we can do to stay in hunt-ready shape and we thought of nobody better to give us some at home fitness ideas to stay bow-ready than Brian Austin of Beast Mode Archery.

  • Our world is upside down. However, planting spring food plots seems to be an acceptable form of social distancing. So we turned to our goods friends Eric Fitzgerald and Jason Obermiller from the seed, nutritional supplement, and fertilizer company Rackology to discuss how to do it right. When should you plant? When is the soil moisture and temperature just right? Should soil testing be done? What about fertilizer? Where should my next food plot go? We answer all these questions and more on this podcast.

Since the interview, lots has changed in the world. Jay had cardiac catheter surgery where cardiologists found a 95% blockage in Jay's widow maker cardiac artery. Two stents later, Jay is feeling better than ever. And then there's COVID-19 issue. Man, we can't wait for deer season and you can't catch the corona virus walking alone in the woods. • When an athletic event involves repetitive motion in order to achieve success, it's important to understand the biomechanics of that movement. The golf swing, pitching a baseball, and the archery shot are good examples. Christian Williams, an exercise science specialist, and avid bowhunter, breaks down the mechanics of the bow shot, how to improve strength and endurance, which muscles are important, and injury prevention. And of course, we talk a bunch about how it all relates to bowhunting.

  • As we open up 2020, our 8th Season, and 8 years of podcasting here at the Big Buck Registry, we thought it only appropriate to take one last look at 2019. If you are a frequent listener of the show, you'll know that in each episode we segment off into the Deer News at the beginning and a good deer hunting story at the end. In the last show of 2019, we put together all the best deer stories told by our guests of 2019, and likewise, we thought we'd take a look at all the best deer news stories of 2019 as well, like a time capsule of events. We visit with Jim Keller, our news anchor, and with some frequent news story contributors, Tim Donze, Jon Guice, and Dan Appelbaum. And then, through some consolidation of all the news we featured on the show in 2019, we present a deer news year in review, with all the best deer news stories feature on the podcast in 2019.

  • Welcome to the Big Buck Registry's Best Deer Hunting stories of 2019. On almost every show we ask each guest to share a memorable deer story that's meaningful to them. At the heart of the Big Buck Registry are the stories of the men and women across the world, from all walks of life, that share a common bond in hunting. We've always felt that the story was just as important as the rest of the show because it brings everything together. If the rest of the show is the text book, the story is the example. The story brings the hunt to life. So we decided to go back through each show and put together a compilation of the deer stories told throughout the year and share them collectively. We'll hear from Jeff Johnston, Scott and Seth Perkins, Richard Cook, Anthony Stallone, Harmon Carson, Allison Rauscher, and Phil Vanderpool. This is part two and our last episode of 2019. Cheers to a healthy, prosperous, and successful 2020.

  • Every now and then a new technology comes along that solves a problem that we didn't know we had. In this case, it's about scoring a trophy animal to within 1/1000 of an inch specificity. In a computer aided model, you can now remove all human error and get ridiculous precision with the help of Trophy Scan. Think of it like instant replay meets deer hunting. We sit down with Jeff Johnston to learn about everything Trophy Scan can do for the hunter while looking to preserve a memory and celebrate an animal beyond the traditional taxidermy mount.

  • Just when you thought you'd heard it all about deer urine, deer scent attractants, deer behavior, and deer farming, along comes a Richard Cook, the formulation master wizard behind Cooks Fatal Attraction deer scent lures. Unlike many brands with expired diluted product, Richard raises deer, collects specimens, and ships his extremely fresh undiluted product quickly. It's like shopping for organic anything directly on the farm itself. We take a deep dive into Richard's deer scent operation.

  • How do you know when you've found a good hunting spot? You know it for sure that it's a good spot when you kill your first good buck there. Allison Rauscher knows this well. After doing her on the ground homework, and then picking the right tree in the right spot on the right property, it all came together recently for Allison one evening on a bow hunt in Wisconsin. She downed one of those Wisconsin monarch bucks that most have only read about. We discuss in detail how Allison finally put it all together and what pieces of info she'll take with her on the next hunt to try and do it all over again.

  • John Eberhart joined us last on Episode 209, where we broke down John's tactics and answered questions based on listener curiosities. This time is a little different. Jay, now with a few saddle hunts under his belt and a first hand account of what it's like, hits John with numerous questions from the novice to the legendary saddling hunting expert. Jay and John engage in many details of saddle hunting overlooked in the first interview.

  • Marc Warnke says that it's not so much the hunting strategy, but it's the spot. That means hunting where hunters don't typically hunt, sometimes hunting spots that haven't been hunted in over 20 years and hunting where wheels can't go. This also means sleeping on bulls or bucks, which means that you're not coming out each day. And that also means hauling in food and gear that one or two hunters couldn't possibly manage. So how? Well, Marc turned to pack goats to get to these remote areas with all the gear needed to hunt great spots for days on end. The rewards are priceless.

  • It's a game of chess according to Cameran Derefield. There's a king and a pawn. Which is which, welp, that's to be determined at the end of the deer season. Studying annual journals about buck behavior and with heavy game camera monitoring, Cameran believes that he can see the target buck's next move and plan accordingly. It's not instant success, but it is methodical and persistent and generally speaking, Cameran is the one calling checkmate. Cameran shares with us all his deer hunting techniques, styles and strategies.

  • If you were to meet Jess Martin in person, you probably wouldn't instantly think buck buck deer killin' machine. But make no mistake, Jess is well on her way to making a name for herself as just that.
