Welcome to Dentistry Unmasked with Aman Bharti. We will be discussing everything clinical, business but also social. So we'll be really peeling under the layers to get to know our guests in long conversations and trying to understand the wins and the troubles that we have as clinical dentists.

It's a difficult profession, but it's also a very enjoyable profession. One of the other motivations that I have for this podcast, is talking about subjects that people don't really want to talk about, such as social media, such as depression and many more.

  • Mudasser Hussain qualified from Manchester in 2011 and till 2019 worked mostly as a NHS dentist.

During the pandemic, he was involved in a pay dispute with his then principal which led to him leaving the practice on what he thought were amicable terms.

It was to his surprise he was later reported to the GDC over dishonesty that led to two years of uncertainty and distress.

It was during this period he came across a coach that transformed his mindset and ultimately his whole life. This inspired him to set up his own coaching company, Clarity Coaching International, to help people achieve their goals and improve their lives.

Mudasser is on a mission to improve the lives of NHS associate dentists and principals to improve working relationships and ultimately achieve job satisfaction.

He is also the host of his own podcast, Diary of a Dental Coach

    In this episode, we discuss:
The background to the pay dispute and the GDC case.
How he was coached to accept the situation and gain a positive mindset.
Clarity Coaching International and how he helps people achieve their goals
What associates seek in an associate position and why the NHS business model is quickly becoming undesirable.
The need for owners of NHS sites to understand how the market is changing and the need to relook at their business models if they are not recruiting.

  • PART 2.

Mike Hesketh qualified from Leeds in 2004. Upon qualification, he joined the Armed Forces and served in Afghanistan as a royal marine.

As dentists, we would imagine we would not actually serve on the front line but Mike explains how this is not actually the case... being medically trained means you are indeed in the thick of the action, treating gunshot wounds among other horrific injuries.

While this was indeed harrowing, this built his character and upon leaving the Marines he was able to apply all the skills he’d acquired and applied to the business world.

Mike and his wife Lara took over Exeter Dental Centre - a small private practice - and within 3 years had grown a business consistently turning over more the £3 million a year!

Today, Mike and Lara have a new project- Dartmoor Dental, which is in its infancy, but already close to turning over similar figures to Exeter Dental Centre.

They also run Hesketh Healthcare, a consultancy that educates is in how to build our dream business.

  • Shafaq Ali qualified from GKT in 2003. In 2020 she was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's which will cut her career short. Despite this, she remains extremely positive, giving her time to multiple charities including Parkinsons.org.uk

She is involved with the BDA benevolent fund, raising awareness for dentists finding themselves in financial difficulties.

Shafaq is also instrumental in the administration of the mental dental Facebook group, and the Confidental phone line. Both these resources are essential for the dental profession as we find stress and anxiety are now at epidemic levels.
