Boundaries are something I’ve found challenging my whole life. And I guess one of those things that I could examine for eternity and never know the real reason why, right? In fact, I wrote an article a few years back about boundaries with some of my frustrations and lessons along the way. It’s starting to feel like boundaries are a life long journey. But this episode is about what’s been going on for me lately, from a bit of a backstory into the past few years and my poor somewhat neglected nervous system, to what that means today and now in my business – with some new ideas, changes, and coming back to alignment. In this episode, I talk about:The last few years and how the old nervous system doesn’t quite bounce back in unprecedented times (and what I’m doing about my own nervous system)Safety versus stepping back into familiarity thinking that’s safe (and how to tell the difference)Some changes happening in my business as a result of that. How I have come to understand boundaries and the way I’m trying to navigate that messiness on a daily business whilst still showing up for my business and my clients. And so much more!

Storytelling Marketing is one of the best ways to connect more deeply with your dream clients and build meaningful connections to your work as a service-based solopreneur and my friend Brook is SO great at doing this. We met via B School many, many years ago when I lived in Sydney and was just starting out in business and I always appreciated Brook's no b.s approach to business and the stories she would tell to give meaning to an intangible service like coaching.Brook McCarthy works with values-based business owners who deliver professional services, through business coaching, training courses and masterminds, to equip owners to earn consistent $10K+ months, while magnifying their impact. Without burning out, getting overwhelmed, or over-spending on team, tech, or other fancy stuff.Join us as we talk about how to manage your energy and sensitivity online in amongst all the noise, the power of story telling, and how Brook navigates that in her business.Connect with Brook further:Website: https://www.hustleandheart.com.auBrook's Minimum Viable marketing plan: https://www.hustleandheart.com.au/marketing-plan Brook's 'Meaningful Work, Remarkable Life' on Spotify podcasts: https://open.spotify.com/show/43iH4tofQBd5zxxMfAUHmNInstagram: https://instagram.com/brookmccarthyTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@brookmccarthy Also mention in this episode:My Emerge + Expand membership: https://katherinemackenziesmith.com/emerge-and-expandKelly Diels Female Lifestyle Empowerment Brand: https://kellydiels.com/female-lifestyle-empowerment-brand/__________COACHING. Life is busy, right!? But sometimes a quick mindset shift can take you from frustrated to a deeper level in your own personal journey. In this video, I share a snippet from a recent life Q+A in the Secret Introvert's Business Gentle Growth Hub membership from a question that one of the members asked about what to do when other circumstances, roles and responsibilities in life can result in having less time and energy to put into our business - how to reconcile that and how to make it work so your business can keep growing. So, based on a few situations in my own life, I shared a couple of mindset shifts that have greatly helped me over the years. When it comes to content creation, we can often overcomplicate it and instead of content marketing being a fun way of sharing your work, it becomes another burden on a long list of things you need to do. In this episode, I go into detail about documenting your journey - a concept I learnt about from @garyvee - and break it down with some ideas, examples, and simple steps that you can easily get started with, even if you don’t have a huge team to create your content for you. This is a simple (but not necessarily easy) way to start creating more content, giving your community more insight into you and the work you do, and keep a record that you can look back on one day and see just how far you’ve come. We’re doing a Documenting Your Journey mini challenge in my Secret Introvert’s Business membership this month, where I’m sharing my own journey but we’re also supporting each other and getting some accountability to try content creation in this way.If this sounds like something you’re interested in, come and join us in Secret Introvert’s Business for just $7/month (cancel any time): https://secretintrovertsbusiness.com

Sometimes you meet someone and instantly click. This episode of Do Business Differently is - believe it or not - the first conversation Lydia and I have ever had but we immediately hit it off and, if you've been here for a while, you'll notice the similarities in values and mindset that we have. I loved this chat so much and it's the epitome of what I had in mind for Do Business Differently when I first decided to do it.Join us for this episode where we talk about:De-conditioning from the 9-5 grind and learning from burnoutHow to take care of your brand new business when your loved ones don't understandWhat we've learnt from building businesses based on what we've been taught 'success' should look like (and what we prefer instead)What's possible when you are open to doing business differentlyAnd so much more

This is a topic I could talk about forever - mostly from personal experience, but also after years of working with introverts and seeing the things that drain our energy. There are so many things that I take into consideration and am constantly tweaking, refining and reviewing in my business to make it better support me and my strengths (instead of working against me, like I did for MANY years following misaligned strategies)In this episode, I share:Three things I think we need to be aware of when making our business more introvert-friendly;The greatest skill an introvert can learn to get less drained by the noise online, following others, and getting swept up in systems, strategies, and business models that appear great but aren't necessarily alignedThe #1 thing that I've found has made me more energised than ever to work in my business. If you're interested in learning more about my brand new membership, Secret Introvert's Business, you can check that out at https://secretintrovertsbusiness.comAnd if you'd prefer to watch this episode (and other trainings on creating an introvert-friendly business) on Youtube, make sure to come over and subscribe at youtube.com/katherinemackenziesmith

The latest episode of Emerge + Expand is a recording from a live I recently did in the Introvert Friendly Business Facebook group, answering a question around resistance to booking in a photoshoot. I thought I'd share it with you because not only is this a great example of a business activity that can often bring up our visibility stuff, I think what we talked about can also be applied to anywhere resistance is showing up for you.How business activities like professional photos can bring up some of our visibility stuff as we step into the world. Why professional photos are a great early investment in your business when deciding where to start in your business and a few tips to feel more comfortable.Questions to ask yourself when identifying and moving through resistance in your business. The way that we're invited to go deeper with ourselves, our own healing and transformation, when we decide to start and launch a business.A really simple trick to soothe your nervous system. My best tips to move through resistance in your business with ease.Or listen on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | StitcherAlso mentioned in this episode:Emerge and Expand Episode 009: Sustainable Visibility with Mai-kee TsangThe Introvert-Friendly Business CommunityLike the sound of the Emerge and Expand membership?Read more about it and jump on the waitlist here

Do you ever just have a conversation with someone and it's SO in alignment not just with your own journey but also with your way of witnessing the evolution of your business over the years? That's what this episode of Emerge + Expand was for me.Sora Schilling is one of my all time favourite people, from the second we first met, her energy was like a warm embrace and it is a joy to connect with her again for this special episode of the podcast. I always say the most recent episode is my favourite, and this will be one I come back to time and time again. Join us for this new Do Business Differently interview where we talk about:02:18 - The importance of embracing your own journey instead of fighting where we think we should, plus how Sora navigates this herself and what she recommends for finding your 'thing'.07:14 - Why starting over again or starting from 0 can be an incredible opportunity to stop and listen instead of hustle and how Sora transformed her business from this place.13:02 - How to discover the best systems and methods for you by starting from yourself first and then finding what supports you best, instead of what's popular.15:57 - Letting go of what we think we 'should' have and instead becoming a magnet for aligned clients instead of being resistant to who we are.19:19 - How to honour the deeper purpose of your work, give people a taste, and let go of the linear path (and what to do instead).23:00 - What to do when you feel good about something you're creating (even if it didn't get the result or outcome you wanted).

Earlier this month I hosted a 3-day workshop and we had some great Q+A live sessions. A conversation that came up a couple of times in the group revolved around resistance to launching and systems when most people just want to work with clients (not everything else that comes with business!)I got permission from one of the participants to share her question (and follow up comments) on the podcast because I thought it would be helpful for other people who feel the same way.In this episode, I chat about:01:59 Most people don't start a business to become marketers, sales people, social media gurus but there are so many roles we have to have in our business - so how can you create as many opportunities to show up in your zone of genius as part of your marketing, launching, and content creation?04:33 The fundamentals to running a business that are required in order for your business to exist and my four questions that you need to answer.09:00 How to reframe your mindset around resting, launching, and systems to make it so much easier to show up in your business.10:29 Why - if you're a flowy, intuitive business owner - you need to have systems even though it seems counterintuitive.11:17 Your launch and your systems don't need to be perfect the first time because you will keep evolving and refining them. 12:45 How to use YouTube to get in front of new people and invite people into your offers and your email list.14:05 How to keep focusing on showing up in your business and focus less on what you wish your people would do.15:30 What to do when you're not sure where you're at or you're worrying about steps further ahead than where you are right now. Also mentioned in this episode:Emerge and Expand Episode 00: Working With Your Energy + Human Design with Amy LeaThrivecart* for your simple payment system (*affiliate link)Tubebuddy* to check your SEO and search for YouTube videos (*affiliate link)Like the sound of the Seasons of Visibility and the Emerge and Expand membership?Read more about it and jump on the waitlist here
