In this conversation, I am honoured to sit down and chat with Adrian Fletcher. Adrian is a licensed psychologist, author, and survivor with lived experience of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. She also uses the name Adrienne & Co.System to reflect a DID system of 22 + parts. She discusses discusses the complexities of living with the condition, the challenges of diagnosis, and the importance of understanding and support from both therapists and the general public. She emphasizes the need for trauma-informed care and the significance of advocacy in breaking down stigma surrounding DID.
takeaways
DID is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, leading to a lack of appropriate treatment. The average age of diagnosis for DID is around 37 years old. Many people living with DID are unaware of their condition until later in life.DID is a response to extreme and ongoing trauma, not a result of a single incident. The media often misrepresents DID, contributing to stigma and misunderstanding.Therapists need to be flexible and trauma-informed to effectively support clients with DID.It's crucial for individuals with DID to communicate and check in with their parts regularly.Advocacy and education are essential in changing public perception of DID.Living with DID can lead to a complex relationship with identity and self-perception.Support from family and friends is vital for those living with DID.Follow Adrian on IG

In this conversation, Monique Koven and Dr. Aimie Apigian discuss the topic of overwhelm and how it relates to trauma and our nervous system. They explore the concept of overwhelm as a trauma response and the ways in which our body tries to protect us from it. You cannot to heal from Trauma until you gently learn to become friends with your nervous system. May survivors have adapted to trauma by shutting down or disconnecting from their feelings and sensations. This makes sense when you live in a dangerous and threatening environment. However the patterns of disconnection remain long after the trauma is over.

Pausing and reflecting before taking action allows for wiser decision-making. The healing journey of trauma survivors involves learning to name and honor their emotions. Framing our emotions in a healthy way helps us understand and respond to them effectively. Braving involves taking action based on our emotional awareness and understanding. Embracing Our Emotions: The Key to Emotional Well-being Healing Trauma: Learning to Name and Honor Our Emotions "I shouldn't feel this way has become for me a little bit of a, oh, I feel something. I feel something I don't want to feel." "The truth sets us free. This is what I feel. I'm not gaslighting myself. I'm not trying to dupe myself into not feeling what I really feel." "Numbing is to try to keep those emotions outside of our conscious awareness. Naming is bringing them up into the surface and looking at them."Dr. Alison Cook's Website & Resources dralisoncook.com

It is important to practice self-compassion and attend to the sacred wounds of the past. Acknowledging and validating our feelings is essential for healing and creating space for self-love and compassion. Attachment plays a significant role in our relationship with our mothers and our ability to offer love and compassion to ourselves.
