  • You WON'T believe what we paid for this bottle!

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos discusses Bordeaux wines, specifically the first five growth wines, while tasting a bottle of 1988 La Mission Haut-Brion and talking about its history and classification.

They also touch on the concept of super second growth wines and second wines of famous Château's. Do we dare compare Bordeaux wines to Australian wines? Discuss the importance of their individual terroir. Plus they reveal the pricing of the 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion and the great deal they got at auction.

🔖 Bordeaux wines, first growth, super second growth, second wines, terroir, pricing

    Takeaways

First growth wines in Bordeaux are highly prestigious and include five top Château's. Super second growth wines are highly regarded and often outperform some first growths. Second wines of a chateau are made from lesser quality grapes and are more affordable. Terroir plays a significant role in the quality and characteristics of Bordeaux wines. Auction can be a great way to find good deals on expensive wines.

    Sound Bites

"We are drinking Bordeaux wines, baby."

"What are the first five growths?"

"Definitely gone into the tertiary flavours, but still a little bit of fruit hanging on in there."

  • Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?

After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!

A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:

A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.

As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning

2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in"

2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality"

  • Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape.

Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020.

In this episode of Got Somme: Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and wine lover Angus O'Loughlin talk about the Toolangi Takeover, the importance of 'F Block Chardonnay' and the world stage Kaspar dreams to take his wines.

  • Chardonnay can be a divisive wine when really it shouldn't! If you don't like Chardonnay chances are you probably just don't like over oaked Chardonnay.

The grape variety itself is actually neutral and if you were to taste a Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Chardonnay next to a William Fevre Petit Chablis you would be mistaken for thinking they are two completely different grape varietals.

    The difference? Oak

One with plenty and one without any!

In this episode of Got Somme, Yarra Valley local Brenden Robnik aka 'The Wine Animal' joins us in studio to deep dive his favourite Australian wine region while also looking at the complex differences altitude can make on Chardonnay separated only by a few kilometres.

Disagree that the Yarra Valley is the best wine region in Victoria?

  • Late last year Got Somme host Angus O'Loughlin was asked via our Instagram

"What bottle would you cellar for ten years"

He held up a 2021 Demi Shiraz that he was drinking in that moment.

That led to a phone call to Syrahmi owner Adam Foster who was inspecting the vines and they confirmed his studio attendance as first winemaker on the podcast in 2024!

    Bottles brought into studio:

    2022 Demi Shiraz

    2017 Lala

    2018 LaLa

    2022 Syrahmi 'Angus'

    2004 Syrahmi (first ever vintage)

A bit of Syrahmi: The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born. Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

  • The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!"

The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours.

Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed.

Raise a glass... but not a flute
