As a part of the collaboration series we have interviews with various artists who performed at the San Jose Jazz Summerfest in August 2023. We had the honor of having legendary Bassist and producer Marcus Miller. He goes into detail about his history as a musician and stories about working on albums with Luther Vandross, Bernard Wright, Don Blackman, Dave Grusin, Grover Washington Jr. + more. This episode includes selections from his catalog (and songs he is credited in playing Bass) that were talking points used throughout the interview.
This was one of the highlights of this series and I am very excited to be sharing this episode.
NOTE: Toward the end of the episode the recording stopped on the audio recorder so you are hearing the camera mic. Out apologies about the quality. These are the challenges when dealing with live on site interviews.
Marcus Miller Picks:
Luther Vandross - Never Too Much Marcus Miller - Much Too MuchDave Drusin - Either WayGrover Washington Jr. - Take Me ThereBernard Wright - Spinnin' -
This "lost" episode was dedicated to the music of Pete Rock. He was originally slotted to be a performer at the San Jose Jazz festival but ended up not working out and his performance was cancelled. I decided to put the episode out becuase I'm just a huge fan and I love the songs that were sampled and played on this episode.
There’s not much to say about the legendary Hip-Hop producer Pete Rock. His catalog and reputation speaks for itself. His crates run deep especially in the jazz section of his collection. Some of my favorite sample sources over the years are tracks included in this episode.
Tracklist:
Pete Rock - Pete's JazzGary Burton - Open Your Eye's You Can FlyAhmad - PoincianaJoe pass - Nite and DayTom Scott - TodayRoy Ayers - Searching -

This episode came at the very end of the festival and was immediately recorded after her live performance on the San Jose Jazz Breakroom Stage. Mae Sun is an amazing multi-instrumentalist and her favorite picks range from classics up to more recent R&B/Soul Jazz adjacent selections. This is a special episode featuring one of my favorite producers SNDTRAK out of Oakland California. SNDTRAK comes from the production school of James Yancey aka J Dilla (something we immediately had in common) and records are the core ingredient to his production. One of the most well versed collectors in all genres with a clear understanding of what came from where and who played what. We could’ve went for hours with just jazz alone but we narrowed it down to some key selections that influenced his ears.
