Can you be TOO enthusiastic? Some people think so, but Rebecca O’Hare doesn’t that’s for sure.
We got stuck into lots of topics, some hard to listen to;
How an unexpected redundancy turned her life upside down
The loneliness and disappointed she felt during her first year at University, and the impact that has had on her work
Being a pioneer of Res Life in the UK in the Private sector, Universities and CUBO.
The impact of cost of living on the ability for Universities to deliver great extra-curricular activities and support.
The debate around the safety of Trans students on campus and why it’s so polarized.
And yes, we talked about THAT question at the Student Accommodation Conference, and you might be surprised and shocked to hear what happened next…

Ana Lozano, a distinguished architect and urban planner, seamlessly integrates academia and practical expertise.
Her multifaceted career spans architecture, real estate, and innovative AI solutions through Nidus Lab's pioneering work in Generative Architecture.
Ana and I were in different countries and have never met in person, yet having listed back to this episode, we connected on a really deep level. I can’t really explain it, but we both agreed that we could have talked for hours and hours, a big thank you to Chris Holloway for recommending Ana for an episode.
We talked about so many things, and Ana’s opinions on whether people in Student Accommodation should fear AI are fascinating, as well as a very different take on ESG & Sustainability.

One of my favourite parts of Know Your Shift, is the quick fire round towards the end, so for this week’s Short Shift, your weekly bitesize clip from the Know Your Shift podcast, I thought I would pick out one of my favourites.

“You Would See Some Of The Kids Exhale As They Came In, They Were Safe Now”
People around Tony Ryan say he is authentic and passionate, I would add inspirational to that list. I am so grateful to a previous guest Steve Jones for recommending Tony, as this conversation will stay with me for a long time.
Tony is the CEO of the Design & Technology Association, but his journey to where he is now is definitely not straightforward.
We discussed so much during our time together, including…
· The racism his parents experienced daily and how it made him angry at the world.
· Tony’s own school days that he describes as brutal and a nightmare
· Falling into teaching whilst working as a mechanic and how even though his school days were traumatic, he went into teaching.
· His rapid rise through schools and leadership in schools, and how his heart ruled his head when taking up a role that took him right back to his childhood.
· How Apple invited him to LA to show him what they could so with education.
· And the one thing he never told his mum…
As always, I asked Tony to recommend a future guest, and he recommended Bill Williams, we look forward to recording an episode with you soon Bill.

“I was on holiday, Iliya phoned me and said, are you sitting down?”
He doesn’t like talking about his legacy (but I made him anyway), but David Tymms certainly has created one in Student Accommodation, so I was delighted that he joined me on the latest episode of Know Your Shift
Growing up in Africa until the age of 10 and then suddenly thrust into a new life
His career growth via different Universities and the boss that really inspired him
The shock news of the iQ & Prodigy Living merger
The transition period during the sale of iQ to Blackstone and why he took a different path to other Senior colleagues
Being able to choose his projects, including his role with QX
And finally being able to say what he wants… and he definitely does that in this episode
As always, I asked David to recommend a future guest, and he recommended Paddy Jackman from Unipol, we look forward to recording an episode with you at some point Paddy.

“At Some Point You Think, There is a Tale to be Told Here”
It only took 9 months, but Paul Watson and I finally sat down and talked, and it was definitely worth the wait.
Paul opened up about so many things;
How one unexpected conversation changed him forever.
The influence Charles Marshall and Karen Burke have had on his life.
He reflections on how Liberty Living ended.
The birth of Now Student Living and how he his managed the rapid growth so far.
3rd party management and comments about a ‘race to the bottom’ (with me throwing my thoughts in as well for what it’s worth)
His thoughts on why so many people want to hear what he has to say, but he rarely speaks, until now…
As always, I asked Paul to recommend future guests, and he gave me a list!
Melissa Browne (a 2nd time nominee so hopefully we can make our diaries work this time)
Dustin Fjeld
Tom White & Kirsty looms as a duo, (that will be a first)
Zandria Barclay
We’ll get in touch and hopefully get you all booked in for some more great episodes.

Bernadette Cochonat’s journey is astonishing.
And we got stuck in to all of it;
Growing up in a bi-lingual home as an only child, and how she can empathise with Chinese students dealing with the pressure that brings.
Moving to China at age 21 and how she managed to succeed in a completely alien environment.
The build up to the Beijing Olympics and how that period changed the world.
How the pollution got so bad in China that it officially went off the scale.
The tragic loss of her father, and the guilt she feels about it.
How her cultural awareness program at Unite Students is helping others draw on her experience of integrating into another culture.
As always, I asked Bernadette to recommend a future guest, and she nominated Vicky Zhang from uHomes, we look forward to recording an episode with you soon Vicky.

I work really hard to out my guests at ease when we are having a recorded conversation, but for this episode, it was my guest that put me at ease discussing topics in which I am not an expert, but she certainly is.
Sam Kingsley is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Consultant specialising in strategy and culture change, and she describes herself as a Professional Troublemaker.
We covered lots of tough topics which are sometimes shocking to hear, but Sam is forging ahead with her mission to turn Why into How…
Intersectionality and why it is vital to ensure everyone feels that they belong.
Her key involvement in the Living Black at University work and who, if anyone is taking this forward.
How she very quickly joined the board of Student Pride and how she is vocal in her activism for LGBTQ+ causes all year round.
And so much more, I learned so much from Sam and I know you will too.
As always, I asked Sam to recommend future guests, and she nominated Tom Guy, Helene Murphy and Rebecca O’Hare, we look forward to recording great episodes with you all soon.

I have had a few people who I’m lucky enough to describe as mentors throughout my career, and Steve Jones was the first and perhaps the most influential, and I know this to be true for so many people in the hospitality industry.
Steve is CEO at Wyboston Lakes, and the Past Chair of the MIA, and we covered many topics including;
Steve’s early life growing up wanting to be a mechanic, to his rapid rise to general Manager in the hotel industry at a young age.
How the industry and the role of the GM has changed.
His unique take on Leadership that can be applied in any sector
How the loss of his own business has affected him and why he still wants to do it again.
How shocking events, particularly involving the health of his children gave him perspective to be able to deal with any situation that is thrown at him
The whirlwind experience of being asked to debate at the Cambridge Union
What effect Charles Holmes has had on life and career.
And what do Steve’s team really think of him? We asked them…

Chris Holloway has been recommended many times by previous guests on Know Your Shift, and now I know why.
Yes he is Chief Business Development Officer for Yugo, but there is so many threads to his life and his story.
From theatre to bookshops to lecturing at university and much more.
Chris tells me how he got into Student Housing by accident thanks to a previous guest, Brian Welsh. From moving to Spain the day after 9/11 and teaching English in Madrid.
And the surprising truth he learned about his father on his wedding day…

· How despite the huge successes in Sam’s career to date, he still suffers with imposter syndrome and what he does to overcome it in the moment.
· Why he took a brave step back in his career which paid huge dividends in the long term.
· Why BTR can be a part of the solution to the housing crisis in the UK.
· How The UKAA is bringing the industry together for the greater good
