This week Deucy and I are talking iconic gaming weapons! We took a small break from our normal deep dives and decided to spin up a big list of some of the best weapons we've ever used. Both of us made our lists and we break it down by generation starting with the NES all the way to some of the more recent favorite like the G.L.O.O Cannon from Prey in 2017. What makes a weapon iconic? It can be anything from how it looks, its utility, how badass it is, or how weird they are. You'll also get a pretty good idea of our individual tastes - we've got some of the big ones like Link's Master Sword and some unique oddities like Alan Wake's flashlight. Lock and load this week's episode and then let us know what YOUR iconic weapons are by emailing us or visiting us on Instagram!

Happy New Year! Our first episode of 2025 covers one of the greatest beat 'em up trilogies EVER - Streets of Rage! Sega released the original Streets of Rage exclusively on the Genesis in 1991 when Capcom and Konami had been dominating the beat 'em up scene at the arcades. It released to wide acclaim for it's fantastic graphics, 90's club vibe, and an amazing soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Streets of Rage 2 followed in late 1992 and was even better than the original in every way possible - the soundtrack itself is timeless and was way ahead of it's time. Streets of Rage 3 later followed in 1994 as the Genesis was slowly winding down in favor of the Saturn and 32X (kind of...). Deucy and I revisit the trilogy and how it holds up today as we dive into the history and development of each game. You're bound to learn something new and maybe scratch that nostalgia itch too.. Join us as we risk everything, including our lives, on the..... STREETS OF RAGE!

We've made it to episode 50! 2024 was a very good year for game releases - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Astro Bot, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom are just a handful of the heavy hitters we saw this year. Deucy and I played A LOT and for our final episode of the year, we share our individual lists of the BEST and some of the more disappointing games we played. We first cover what we're looking forward to after all of the big announcements of the game awards. You'll hear the worst of gaming in 2024, our honorable mentions, and we finally share what we put on our Top 10 Games of the Year. Our lists are pretty different which makes this episode even more fun to listen to so let us know what you thought of where we placed everything.

We're doing something a little different this week! We're reviewing and diving into a movie based on a game and also the game based on the movie that was based on the game... We invited our friend Vito, the 8BitBarrister, to discuss Street Fighter: The Movie and Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game. After Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon stunk up the theaters, Capcom wanted join the fight in December 1994 with Street Fighter: The Movie. The cast, notably Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, make it wildly fun time of a movie that's reached cult status 30 years later despite its odd James Bond-like plot. We're also reviewing the games based on the movie - Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game! Digitized graphics were all the rage in the early 90's thanks to games like Mortal Kombat and NARC and Capcom thought it'd be a good idea to make a Street Fighter game in the same style. You'll hear all about the Arcade and home versions for the PS1 and Saturn, so press start to continue!

This week, Deucy and I invited our friend Juan to talk about one of the Genesis' run n' gun gems Gunstar Heroes! This is one of Juan's favorite games of all time and he really wanted to revisit it with us and talk about why this cult classic is one of the best games on the Genesis. Gunstar Heroes was Treasure's debut game before they would quickly be known as one of Sega's best and most unique game developers. We dive into the history of Treasure, including how much of the team were Konami vets, and the interesting deal that led to the Gunstar Heroes being created (there's a tie to McDonald's that you wouldn't expect.....). It's still one of the most impressive 16-bit games you'll ever see and we had a lot of fun talking through everything Gunstar Heroes did right!

We've got a nice beefy episode of dinosaur hunting this week when Deucy and I revisit the entire Turok series on the N64. We're covering it from it's comic book beginnings in the 1950's to it's incredible, if underappreciated, quadrilogy of games on Nintendo's iconic fifth generation console. Deucy and I share our thoughts on recent games we've been playing including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard before we dive into all four Turok games. The N64 only had around 12 games when Turok: Dinosaur Hunter released in March 1997 and we examine how the series changed from its start as an influential console shooter and how it compared to contemporaries by the time Turok 3 was released in 2000. And we'll definitely be answering how well these games hold up with the incredible remasters from Nightdive Studios

This episode is dropping on Halloween and there's no other game that deserves a bonus episode - Resident Evil!
We open the episode some recent games we've been getting into - I talk about how great the Silent Hill 2 Remake really is and and Retro Realms: Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead, a really cool sidescrolling slasher by Way Forward. We recently got Analogue Pockets and Deucy we get into what it is and how well it plays GameBoy/GBC/GBA/GameGear and a lot more!
We're revisiting PS1 classic that redefined survival horror and how it went from a supernatural horror first person game with co-op to the George Romero-esque zombie nightmare that we all loved back in 1996. We'll also dive into the Gamecube exclusive (originally...) 2002 Remake and many of the other ports and versions that existed. It's a game with a long history and I recommend you revisit our Top 10 Resident Evil Games in Episode 7 and enjoy this deep dive into the genre defining original!

We're continuing Horrorfest this month with a brand new episode about one of the most important games of all time - DOOM! Released in December 1993, it quickly became the biggest PC game of all time for its stunning graphics and sound, incredible level design, and ripping and tearing into any demon that stands in the Space Marine's way. We revisit the history of ID Software and Doom from the origins of the genre that it would ultimately define for decades to come to the development, release and the ports. It's impossible to overstate the impact and influence Doom would have on gaming and this episode was a great one to record.
Don't forget our BONUS EPISODE releases on Halloween! Resident Evil and REMake

It's October and our first episode cover the 1997 PS1 masterpiece Castlevania: Symphony of the Night! This was a massive departure from anything the Castlevania had previously done and it created an entirely new genre that has hundreds of games released every year. SotN is one of my favorite games of all time and in this episode we dive into the development history including its origins on the 32X! This was Deucy's first time actually finishing the first castle and he shares his experience and how this holds up 27 years later (you'll never guess....).

In episode 40, we covered the original NES trilogy of TMNT games and this week we're back covering the 16-bit games! This era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games is arguably the peak of all TMNT games. Turtles in Time was a sequel to the hit original arcade game and it was made even BETTER on the SNES and we cover the big differences between to the do and which one gets turned into turtle soup. We also cover Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis, which was a heavily changed port of Turtles in Time, and Deucy and I break down all three versions of Tournament Fighters. The NES, SNES, and Genesis versions are all drastically different and we breakdown each one and make the final call on the best one.
Don't forgot to follow us on Instagram for our 31 Games of Horror Horrorfest! Our next episode is the 1997 masterpiece Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, releasing on October 11th.

This week, Deucy and I hit the gridiron with some of the best arcade football games in history! The NFL season has just started and while sports sims hold their place among the hardcore, arcade-style sports made the experience far more accessible. We start with the Tecmo Bowl series, from its origins in the arcade in the late 80s to becoming one of the most iconic sports games ever. We've also revisited the NFL Blitz and NFL Street series to talk about their histories and how some of the games hold up decades later.

This week, Deucy and I dive back into the world of games based on movies with Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis! Jurassic Park is one of the best movies ever made and there epitomized "blockbuster" in 1993. Naturally, many developers were desperate to get the license to what was guaranteed to be the year's biggest movie. The Super Nintendo version was developed by Ocean while the Genesis version was developed by BlueSky Software and these games could not be more different. We revisited both games and share our memories and experiences on how well both of these games hold up 31 years later with the Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection. This week, we're going back to the beginnings of everyone's favorite heroes in a half shell with the NES TMNT trilogy! Deucy and I were playing the more recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate and we figured it was a perfect time to talk about the earlier games. We start in 1989 when the turtles were at their most popular and Konami (under Ultra Games) released the first game that was notorious for many reasons. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game was a far better game and one of the best arcade conversions of the time. Deucy and I get into the development of the games and our memories of TMNT III: The Manhattan Project. This was a really great series of games to revisit, press start to continue!

Earlier this week, the Game Boy celebrated it's 35th anniversary after being released on July 31st, 1989. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color would go on to sell over 118 million units and are THE reason handheld gaming has evolved the way it has today with the Switch and Steam Deck. Deucy and I thought there's no better way to celebrate the iconic and influential handheld by sharing our top 10 favorite Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. We've got the Game Boy classics like Tetris and Super Mario Land 2 but you'll definitely hear some surprises in both of our lists.

With EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, happening this weekend and Capcom announcing "MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics", it's a great time to continue our deep dive into the X-Men and Marvel universe of games. This episode is dedicated to the fighting game era of Capcom's Marvel games covering Marvel Super Heroes all the way to 2017's Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite and we even cover the X-Men: Mutant Academy and Next Dimension games that Capcom didn't develop. We had a lot of fun with each of these games and it was shocking that Deucy had never played Marvel Super Heroes until now, so please enjoy as we take you for a ride.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a game we've wanted to talk about for a looooong time and this week we finally made it happen! Our friend Vito, @8bitbarrister on Instagram, joins us once again to experience Super Mario Land 2 all over again. This gem of a GameBoy game was originally released in 1992 and it took Mario in a drastically different direction than the NES games. We talk about how Nintendo R&D1 wanted to make this the most unique Mario game ever by taking advantage of everything the GameBoy hardware offered. Wario also makes his first appearance ever in Mario Land 2 and we discovered what his favorite food was too. Press start to continue!

Our long awaited episode on Super Metroid is here! We invited our friend Vito, @8bitbarrister in Instagram, to talk about one of the best games ever released. The three of us consider Super Metroid as one of our favorite games of all time and we really enjoyed revisiting the game as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Deucy also talks about how he's able to beat the game in just over an hour! Super Metroid would eventually influence Castlevania and the two now define an entire genre that's immensely popular to today. Don't forget to revisit Episodes 23 and 24 where we revisit the earlier Metroid games!

For our 35th episode we felt it made sense to celebrate with an NES game celebrating it's 35th anniversary this year. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse was original released in December 1989 in Japan with a U.S. release following it in September 1990. Dracula's Curse was a return to the series roots after Castlevania II: Simon's Quest left fans divisive with it's non-linear structure. Castlevania III introduced branching pathways that would lead to different endings and new playable characters that all played much differently than Trevor did. For as much as it does right, the difficult is among the most brutal on the NES. Deucy and I talk about the significant differences between the Japanese and U.S. version and our experiences with this NES classic.

This week, we've compiled a list of the good, the bad, and some of the ugly games based on some of our favorite cartoons! Our recent Tiny Toon Adventures episode got us thinking about some of the one-off games that we've played over the years. Many of these probably wouldn't need their own episode but were perfect for an afternoon block of podcasting. We talk everything from Beavis & Butthead, Goof Troop, Gargoyles, The Flintstones, Batman: The Animated Series and a lot more.

The only thing better than a great game is an amazing sequel (and that two is better than one). We were putting a list together and it wasn't long before we realized we had a lot to talk about this week. We fire off over 30 sequels across all generations and how some of them changed gaming forever and influenced many others. It's sequel mania and we've got everything from Super Mario Bros. 3, Street Fighter II, Sonic 2, Grand Theft Auto III, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, and a lot more.
Tell us your favorite sequels or sequels we missed!
