  • What would happen if you reconnected with the passion you had to set aside decades ago?

Art and John Hankins discuss John’s remarkable journey from social worker to IT professional to financial therapist at age 71. "This fills me with a feeling I have not had for a really long time," John reveals, describing his newfound purpose.

The conversation explores our complex relationship with money – the fears, avoidances, and anxieties that shape our financial decisions. Can retirement be more than just financial planning? "For me, it is the endless possibility," John says. Through personal stories and professional insights, this episode challenges listeners to reconsider what's possible in life's later chapters. Are you feeling stuck in transition? John's parting wisdom reminds us: "You are capable... and you're not alone."

John Hankins is a certified financial therapist who reinvented himself at age 71 after retiring from a 35-year career in IT. With early roots as a social worker helping disadvantaged communities in West Philadelphia, John now combines his financial expertise with his passion for helping others. He serves on the board of the Financial Therapy Association and specializes in guiding retirees through the emotional aspects of their relationship with money. Through his practice at financialtherapy.me and his YouTube channel, John helps clients transform financial anxiety into empowerment and purpose.

  • Art and Hanna Bankier explore the complex terrain of life transitions, particularly the shift from hands-on parenting to becoming a "Mama Mentor" as children leave home. Hanna shares her journey from Swedish immigrant to transition coach, revealing how every identity shift creates opportunities for authentic reinvention. "We have this idea that the time we have left is unknown, combined with life is fragile, equals do it now," she reflects, challenging listeners to embrace change rather than resist it.

Through personal stories and practical exercises, Hanna offers listeners a roadmap for navigating transitions with intention. "Are you performing, producing, or providing?" she asks, confronting our culture's obsession with productivity as the measure of worth. The conversation weaves between vulnerability and practical advice, including a powerful identity-mapping exercise with colored markers that reveals where your energy flows. Can we slow down enough to recognize our inherent value beyond what we do?

Hanna Bankier is the founder of Birdie Launcher, where she helps moms spread their wings as their little ones leave the nest. A sought-after coach, change catalyst, and speaker, Hanna left her 20+ year television career as a VP of Production to follow her passion: connecting people to possibilities. Drawing from her own experience launching her oldest child (now a college junior) while preparing for her high school senior's departure, Hanna became the "go-to Birdie Launcher friend" among her peers. With advanced degrees in Electronic Communication Arts and Industrial Organizational Psychology, plus certifications in Mediation, Conflict Resolution, and coaching (ACC from ICF), she brings professional expertise to personal transitions. Her provocative question to mothers—"What if the best years of your life are yet to come?"—guides her work helping women rediscover themselves beyond active parenting. When not coaching, Hanna serves on the board of BAYCAT.org, hikes, dances, travels, and hosts gatherings for her intentionally-created community.

  • What invisible forces keep us living lives that are too small for our potential?

In this compelling episode of Life in Transition, "Recognizing Your Worth When Others Don't: Leroy Roberts' Life in Transition," Leroy shares his remarkable journey from a poor Jamaican village to international impact. "There is a spirit of containment that keeps a lot of people trapped," he explains, recounting how at just 13 years old, he made the decision to pursue education despite ridicule and resistance.

How do we break free from limiting beliefs passed down through generations? What happens when we carefully choose who influences us? Through stories of determination, setback, and reinvention, Leroy offers profound insights about recognizing our inherent worth. "Wherever you are now, you were led there by your consent," he challenges listeners. "Who are you allowing to lead you, and why?" This episode will inspire anyone facing transition to take ownership of their circumstances and embrace their true value.

Leroy Roberts grew up in a small village called Grey Ground in rural Jamaica, where he became the first person in his family to attend high school—a decision that required immense courage and defiance of cultural expectations. His journey took him from law enforcement in Jamaica to military service with the British Army's Royal Engineers, where he traveled the world before a work-related injury ended his military career. Now based in the UK, Leroy helps others break free from what he calls "the spirit of containment" to recognize their inherent worth and lead more purposeful lives.

  • What would happen if your loved ones had to sort through everything you own tomorrow? Are you prepared for life's ultimate transition?

In this episode of Life in Transition, Art Blanchford speaks with Sonya Weisshappel, the "Chaos Whisperer" behind Seriatim Inc. At just 14, Sonya witnessed something extraordinary—her father's spirit leaving his body. "I saw a vapor cloud come from his center and hover and leave," she recalls. This profound moment taught her our bodies are merely shells. Nothing goes with us in the end. How did this realization transform her life? Sonya channeled this spiritual understanding into helping others declutter both physical spaces and digital chaos, creating harmony in their lives.

Ever felt weighed down by your possessions? You're not alone. The conversation dives deep into how clutter creates resistance in our daily lives. Art shares his own garage organization journey. Sonya challenges listeners to take inventory of their spaces. Is your environment supporting your goals? "When the mental and physical are balanced and not out of alignment, the person is at ease," Sonya explains. The episode concludes with practical wisdom for estate planning. Don't leave loved ones with "a flaming pile" to sort through. Start now. Have more fun. Live intentionally. What changes will you make today?

Sonya Weisshapel grew up in New York City where she started her organizing company, Seriatim, in 1999. Proudly dyslexic, Sonya founded her business in order to avoid writing a resume and now, a quarter of a century later, she and her Seriatim team have earned themselves a reputation as consummate Chaos Whisperers. In 2017, Sonya became the first organizer to be accepted into the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses™ Program. She is currently President of the New York Council of Relocation Professionals (NYCORP). She shares her wisdom with the world through her debut memoir, Confessions of a Chaos Whisperer.

  • What happens when life's challenges become your greatest teachers?

In this revealing episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford welcomes Mike Huber, a mental performance coach with a powerful story of transformation. Mike candidly shares his journey through two pivotal life transitions: becoming a father and recovering from gambling addiction. "I've learned about myself that I am much more of an introvert than I am an extrovert... having that one-to-one relationship of like I'm here to listen, I want to understand you. I don't want to judge you, I want to help you." This philosophy now guides his work with young athletes after leaving a 20-year career to pursue his passion for sports psychology. Why did he make such a dramatic change? His recovery journey provided both the courage and clarity to pursue a more authentic path.

Art and Mike dig into the pressures facing youth in competitive sports today and how Mike's approach emphasizes enjoyment over winning at all costs. But can career ambitions and parental responsibilities truly coexist? Mike offers practical insights on this delicate balance, sharing the two tools that transformed his life: therapy and mindfulness meditation. From panic attacks to purpose, Mike's story illustrates how vulnerability becomes service. Each time we share our struggles, he suggests, we cut their power in half. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder: our suffering finds meaning when it helps others navigate similar challenges. Isn't that what transition is ultimately about—transforming our pain into purpose?

Michael Huber is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® whose mission is to help young athletes become confident problem solvers. Mike entered the sport psychology field inspired by his experiences as a parent, youth sports coach, and compulsive gambler in recovery. He has experienced many challenging transitions, including fatherhood, recovery, divorce, and entrepreneurship. Mike aims to be of service to others by sharing his story. • "How do you rebuild when everything you've known is completely shattered in a single day?"

In this powerful episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford speaks with Melissa Saleh about her journey through devastating loss and remarkable rebirth. Melissa shares how a single day in 2014—when she lost her daughter at birth—shattered her entire existence, leading to the end of her marriage, career, and life in New York City. She describes the process of hitting rock bottom and how she began rebuilding in Charleston, South Carolina, finding healing through food, nature, and putting creative energy into renovating her home.

Melissa reveals how trauma invaded her nervous system and required years of intensive healing work, including a dedicated year focused solely on trauma therapy. She discusses developing powerful intuitive skills, learning to surrender to pain instead of avoiding it, and how this transformation led to a loving marriage and two healthy children that doctors said would be impossible. The conversation offers profound insights on living with uncertainty, the importance of self-love, and how trauma can be transcended—not eliminated—to create a meaningful, authentic life aligned with one's deepest values.

Melissa Saleh is a force of nature—former lawyer and journalist turned serial entrepreneur, masterful storyteller, and advocate for survivors of trauma. With a career spanning technology, media, and brand strategy, she has shaped the narratives of Fortune 500 giants and startups alike, helping them carve out their place in a fast-moving world. As the co-founder of FairPlayAI, she works to promote equity and reduce bias in automated decision-making.

  • "What if the most challenging transition in your life could become your greatest opportunity with just one mental shift?"

In this deeply personal episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford interviews his wife Tonya about her transformative experience relocating their family to Shanghai, China. Tonya shares how her initial resistance to the move transformed through a single, powerful mindset shift that changed her perspective from feeling trapped to recognizing her agency. She describes the moment she realized she could simply decide to embrace the change, shifting from seeing negatives to focusing on potential positives, and how this fundamental shift in perspective altered not just her approach to the move but her entire relationship with life's challenges.

The conversation explores how Tonya channeled her own transition struggles into creating a robust support community for other expat families, ultimately building a program that served over 100 families through monthly tours, regular social gatherings, and a multilingual welcome network. Tonya reflects on how this experience taught her to recognize her power to create change, a lesson she continues to apply in her current work supporting foster youth transitioning to adulthood. The episode offers listeners practical wisdom on transforming resistance into opportunity through conscious choice and mindset management.

Tonya Blanchford is a community builder, volunteer coordinator, and transition expert who transformed the expatriate experience for dozens of families in Shanghai, China. As an "Army brat" who moved every two years during her childhood, Tonya leveraged her lifetime of transitions to create support systems for others facing similar challenges. After successfully relocating her three young children internationally and building the New Parents Program at the British International School in Shanghai, she now serves as the volunteer coordinator for Jonathan's Path, a local charity supporting foster children aging out of the system. Tonya's personal philosophy centers on the power of mindset shifts and conscious choice in navigating life's most challenging transitions.

  • What happens when you stop multitasking completely for one week? The unexpected benefits and painful withdrawals I discovered… - Art Blanchford

In this revealing solo episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford shares his week-long experiment of zero multitasking and the surprising results it yielded. Art describes how eliminating distractions—no podcasts while running, no phone calls while driving, no TV during meals—initially triggered intense feelings of loneliness and withdrawal. However, as the week progressed, he experienced profound benefits: improved presence, weight loss from mindful eating, deeper connections with others, and remarkably, the disappearance of his chronic afternoon fatigue that had plagued him since recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome in 2020.

The experiment transformed Art's relationship with silence and presence, leading him to implement sustainable practices moving forward. He now commits to mindful eating without distractions, incorporates mandatory 15-minute silent periods before any media consumption during activities, and institutes a 5-minute pause before reaching for distractions. These simple yet powerful practices have created space for clearer thinking, better impulse control, and increased productivity on truly important tasks. Art's vulnerable exploration offers listeners practical insights for breaking free from the "always on" mentality that dominates modern life.
