You've probably heard of the concept of 'the power of the crowd' - in this episode of the Mastering Risk Management podcast, we hear about it being put to good use to battle the scourge of our online world - cyber criminals & state-sponsored hackers.
Our guest is Philippe Humeau, Founder and CEO of CrowdSec an open source, multiplayer firewall that analyses visitor behaviour and provides adapted responses to all kinds of attacks. With more than 250,000 installations across in excess of 180 countries clearly, it's an approach that works.
You'll hear about Philippe's extensive experience, from the time he got 'fired' from school, right through to his articulation of the complex, not complicated, problem that is cyber security.
Every organisation is exposed to this risk - should your business be part of the group effort to minimise the impact of this crime? I commend you to listen to the episode before you answer!

In this episode, Anthony reflects on the CrowdStrike incident that impacted millions of businesses and users across the globe.
He talks about what happened and what some of the key lessons that we can take away from the incident - including the importance of testing, ensuring backups are in place and working, clear, timely, and transparent communications and of course, the criticality of third-party risk management.
And lastly, what should organisations be thinking about in future to avoid a similar occurrence - Is our cloud strategy resilient, are our user devices fit for purpose / relevant to the operating environment, do we get the appropriate level of assurance from our service and hardware providers?

Knowing who has access to your systems and that they have the right level of access is a key tenant of good cybersecurity hygiene. The challenge is that users forget their passwords or can't navigate the multifactor authentication (MFA) process - meaning a call to the Help Desk.
CEO of Nametag Inc, Aaron Painter talks to us about how organisations can save time, improve customer & employee satisfaction and enable the Help Desk to focus on key systems issues. The secret - utilising the technology we all have in our hands these days - our mobile phone!
Aaron talks us through the process (in plain English!) that Nametag has developed to make this time consuming and sometimes very frustrating verification task a thing of the past.
But don't take my word for it - have a look at their website and the demonstration videos - link is here.

Have a listen to this fantastic chat with Brad Hibbert, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Strategy Officer of Prevalent, a leader in third party risk management.
With all organisations looking for ways to streamline operations and focus on their core skillsets, there has been a massive uptake over recent years in outsourcing / co-sourcing or just plain contracting out elements of the business.
Whilst this realises many efficiency / cost benefits, you can't outsource the organisations responsibilities or legal obligations. Most importantly, any incidents / errors by the third party often lead to reputational damage to your own organisation.
Brad talks about the methodology they use to qualify third party providers - including an initial assessment process and then ongoing monitoring - providing a 360-degree risk profile of your third-party vendors.
A must listen for any organisation relying on third party providers! Contact details for Prevalent are below:

Almost every organisation on the planet is reliant on a supply chain of some description - and in this episode we unpack the challenges and major developments that have affected supply chains.
My guest is Pete Grett - Founder and CEO of the Blackrock Group. His career journey is an important part of his backstory, having started his working career as a temp employee in a warehouse.
Something must have struck a chord with Pete as he quickly rose to a leadership career in supply chain operations including senior roles at FedEx.
We touch on some of the 'front of mind' issues challenging supply chain leaders today - shipping incidents that block key supply chain infrastructure for days, weeks or even months, the emergence of artificial intelligence up and down the supply chain and of course, consumer demand for ever faster delivery times.
I really enjoyed this discussion with Pete - I hope you do too.

As promised when we interviewed Simon earlier in the year, we spoke to him again in this episode to get some insight into the RMIA Risk Management Conference happening on the 13th to the 15th of May in Sydney.
Since we last spoke, Simon and the Conference team have done a great job at securing some top-notch speakers and presenters and finalising what looks to be an awesome event.
You'll hear Simon talk about what makes this year's conference so worthwhile, his 'superfan' crush on one of the speakers and why the price of registration represents such great value, not only for the individual attending but also for the organisation they represent.
I trust you enjoy this discussion and look forward to seeing you at the event!

In our chat, Rocco shares his vast experience in assisting companies to safely, and with due regard to the environment, retire or on sell end of life computer and network equipment.
As you'll hear, the biggest challenge is not the physical equipment, but rather ensuring that all company confidential or sensitive data is removed from the devices and unable to be retrieved.
Listen for his observation on where data sometimes turns up - where you'd least expect it!
It is also great to hear that Rocco and the team are committed to keeping old devices out of landfill - reducing the burden of e-waste on the environment.
Rocco and the Brass Valley team can assist no matter where you are in the world so if you are looking for certainty and security in retiring your old / end of life technology, check out the link below:

He generously shares stories of the things that have influenced his career and helped shaped his now enormous passion for the profession.
This is definitely worth a listen for risk professionals and those who want a better understanding of why Risk Management isn't just a 'nice to have' but a 'must have' for all organisations.

Welcome back to the first podcast interview for 2024!
In this podcast, I chat with Alex Bovee, CEO of ConductorOne, a firm dedicated to modernising how organisations manage access to their vital systems and data.
In my experience, most organisations struggle with getting their access controls right - trying to navigate the fine line between being too restrictive and impacting business efficiency and too open and putting systems and data at risk.
Alex shares his insights into the problem and how Conductor One have developed a platform that addresses this problem that has been around since the first computer password!

In this discussion, Anthony Wilson and Brett Palmer discuss what good reporting looks like for Executives and Directors of organisations.
Clearly there are regulatory requirements that Senior Management and Boards must meet and that must be supported by robust Risk Management reporting. The trick is always getting the balance right - too much detail is just as bad as too little.
When reporting to these groups, materiality is key - the Board and the Executive need to be hearing about the Material risks, the effectiveness of the controls and progress on any actions.
One of the biggest drivers for being effective with your reporting is to assist in key decision making. Armed with an effective and thorough risk assessment, decisions can be made about which opportunities to pursue, which projects to activate and which threats to treat.
This is a great listen for those that find it a challenge to get their Risk Management reporting right or for those that want to benchmark their current reporting regime.
