One of my favourite Canadian personal finance books to recommend is Larry Bates' Beat the Bank because it's exactly what every Canadian needs to know about how to advocate for yourself, not pay too much in fees, and navigate the complex and sometimes secretive world of finance. Considering Larry worked in finance for over 35 years, he knows what he's talking about and holds nothing back.

Leisa Peterson first came on the podcast in 2020 to talk about her first book The Mindful Millionaire, so I'm thrilled to welcome her back to talk about her new book The Money Catalyst where we deep-dive into the topics of scarcity, abundance, nurturing your inner wealth and transforming your relationship with money. What's also very different about her new book is that it's written as a narrative instead of a more traditional how-to style. If you know me, you know I love personal finance books written like this (like The Latte Factor and The Wealth Barber), so if you're like me, you'll love this book too!

Too often, we confuse money for happiness, while it's simply a tool that can help us increase our happiness (to a limit). To talk about how to get your happy back and how to use money strategically to help you get there, for this episode, we're re-listening to my interview with Melissa Leong, author of Happy Go Money and money expert on The Social.

It’s been an interesting year for investing so far, which is why I’ve invited Amber Kanwar, former anchor and reporter on BNNBloomberg and now host of the top investing podcast In the Money, to come on show to talk about what’s going on with the markets now and what tips she’s learned from her years of interviewing the best investors in the country. We also discuss her unconventional journey to becoming a finance journalist and now podcast host, as well as what her personal investing strategy looks like.

It's not about the latte! Most people (and money experts) misunderstand the true meaning of the latte factor, so who better to ask what it really means than co-author of The Latte Factor John David Mann. In this re-listen episode, we discussed what it was like writing this narrative-style personal finance book with bestselling author David Bach (The Automatic Millionaire), and the core messages of the book such as spending within your value system, setting strong financial goals, and never giving up on yourself, especially when times are tough.

Knowing what we know now about money, I bet most of us would do things differently if we could go back in time. Although time machines don't exist, at least there's Shannon Lee Simmons' new book Making Bank: Money Skills for Real Life which was written specifically for teenagers so they can not only avoid repeating the same money mistakes we made, but they can learn all the skills they need to reach financial freedom during they most formative years. If you've got a teenager (or know someone who does), you're going to want to listen to this and then buy them a copy of this book!

This episode was incredibly relevant back in 2020 (and this originally aired before Covid and the crash!), and it's still just as relevant with the current economic situation we find ourselves today. If you want to know what to do with your investments from a true professional and expert in the field, Ben Felix, who is not only a CFP, CFA and CIM, but also the Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager at PWL Capital, then you need to listen to this episode.

We spend most of our lives saving for retirement, but when we get there... what's next? In this episode originally released in 2019, I interview Mike Drak, author of retirement books like Victory Lap Retirement and Retirement - Heaven or Hell?, all about how to find your purpose in your retirement years, what it means to have a second career in retirement, and how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls for retirees like boredom and depression.

The saying "Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life" is quite honestly a lie. Even if you find your passion and are doing a job you love, it's still a job. And sometimes it's not fun. Take it from me! I love working for myself, but it's still work. Not only that, I know so many people who have passions outside of work, and their job is just, well, their job. And that's okay, says author and now TED Talk speaker Simone Stolzoff in this interview I had with him in 2023. I hope you enjoy it and his book as much as I did.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had one or two terrible bosses during their career. And I remember thinking "If I had the chance, I would do everything differently." But how do you become a good boss when you finally get the opportunity and avoid repeating their mistakes? That's what I discuss in this episode with CEO coach and author of You're the Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need) Sabina Nawaz who has decades of experience working with C-level executives and teams at Fortune 500 companies and mega-institutions around the world. Starting her career at Microsoft, she went from managing software development teams to leading the company’s executive development and succession planning efforts for over 11,000 managers and nearly a thousand executives. Needless to say, she knows how to lead and what makes a good manager, which is why she wanted to share the guidebook on how to be a good leader, the pressures that can lead to bad management behaviours, and the importance of empathy in leadership, and so much more.

With everything that's going on between Canada and the U.S., a lot of us Canadians are rethinking our travel plans by staying on this side of the border to not only save money but to support our own economy. And one of the best ways to see our beautiful country is by travelling by RV. For this episode, I talk to Christopher Mahony, president of Go RVing Canada, a non-profit that's dedicated to promoting the RVing lifestyle in Canada. He shares the financial benefits of RV travel vs. air travel, the growing popularity of RVing among younger Canadians, the intricacies of RV ownership such as choosing between new and used RVs, and the future of electric RVs.

I rarely have guests on the show to talk about real estate, especially real estate investing, since there are so many sharks out there trying to sell some get-rich-quick scheme or there are just so many other real estate-specific podcasts already out there. But when I had the chance to meet Daniel Foch and Nick Hill at an event recently, I knew I had to have them both on the show to fill us all in on what's going on with the Canadian real estate market. Not only do they host The Canadian Real Estate Investor Podcast, but they also have years of experience working in real estate in a variety of roles as well. They also have personal experience with homeownership and real estate investing too. We go through a lot in this episode, so if you're thinking "Is this a good time to buy a home or sell my property?" you're gonna want to listen to this.

Freedom fund, f*** off fund, no matter what you want to call it, we all need an escape plan from a bad job, bad relationship, or just bad situation that involves having a stack of cash in the bank in case we need to leave. I discussed this and more with Paulette Perhach, who coined the term "f*** off fund" in an article she wrote which subsequently went viral. Paulette is also an author of Welcome to the Writer's Life and continues to write articles for publications like the New York Times, Elle, Cosmopolitan and McSweeney's. She also helped me craft my book proposal which landed me a book deal, so Paulette will always be someone I'm so thankful came into my life!

This was such a special episode to record. I've been talking with Brian Rump online over email and DMs for years as he's been a longtime podcast listener. When I did a call out in 2023 for money stories I could feature in my book Everything but Money, he volunteered and his story ended up being one that impacted readers the most. When my book came out and I sent him a copy, he asked if he could step out from the anonymous name I gave him, come on the podcast, and share the rest of his story including his healing journey and how he went from banker and economics and finance teacher at Fleming College to business coach and certified consulting hypnotist to help people with their own money stories.

Life can be unexpected, but no matter what, it's important to be prepared in case the unexpected happens. That was one of the key messages Keisha Blair shared with me in our podcast interview and her award-winning book Holistic Wealth. Soon after giving birth to her second child, her husband fell ill and within the span of 24 hours, Keisha became a widow and single mom to two young children. This experience not only shaped the rest of Keisha's life but inspired her to share the financial lessons she learned from it, to help others build resiliency no matter what life throws at you.

To celebrate the release of my bestselling book "Everything but Money: The Hidden Barriers Between You and Financial Freedom," I hit the road to do a cross-Canada book tour, with my first stop taking place in Toronto on Jan. 31, and yes, I recorded it so you could be right there with me! A huge thank you to my co-host and MC Melissa Leong who was absolutely incredible. Make sure to grab a copy of her book "Happy Go Money" or listen to my interview with her on episode 181. Another big thank you to BMO ETFs for supporting my book launch and sponsoring my entire book tour. Without them, this tour wouldn't be possible. And finally thank you to everyone who has bought a copy of my book, borrowed it from the library, and given it a rating or review online!

If you liked the episode where I interviewed my maternal grandpa, then you'll love this episode where I interview my paternal grandma! Audrey Moorhouse immigrated from Scotland to Canada with her husband in her 20s when my dad was about 3 years old. She had a rough childhood to say the least being brought up in foster care, but through all of her struggles, she was able to build a beautiful life for herself in British Columbia, and show me, her granddaughter, just how resilient us Moorhouses are. This episode originally aired on May 17, 2016.
