In this interview, Dr. Mary Pardee sits down with Dr. Natalie Scheeler to discuss fecal microbiota transplants (FMT).
FMT is just what it sounds like- a poop transplant.
FMT is taking the stool from a healthy person and transplanting that to another individual, who has a gastrointestinal condition, with the goal of reintroducing beneficial organisms into the gut. FMT is currently FDA approved for the treatment of recurrent C. difficile infections but research is underway for many other gastrointestinal conditions that may be influenced by the gut microbiota. In this interview, Dr. Scheeler delves into the research that is emerging around FMT and different gastrointestinal conditions. She first explores the history of FMT which surprising dates back to the 4th century. She provides an overview of donor testing that is required of the FMT donors.
