In this episode of “Mom Life in Luxembourg,” Hayley chats with the incredible Emily Cooper, otherwise known across social media as the content creator @millenial_mom_banter. Emily has such a “Luxembourg” story. She’s originally British, but moved to Belgium when she was four. She speaks perfect English with a British accent and perfect French too! Her family moved to Luxembourg a few years later, where she finished her secondary school before heading off to University in the UK. Emily shares her story of how she never felt quite “British enough,” but also didn’t feel Belgian either. As a child, that felt uncomfortable, but now she considers herself a citizen of the world and appreciates her global upbringing as one of her greatest assets!

Episode 3
The next guest on the show is the absolute powerhouse, Julie Mangen. Julie is a mom of three, and is actually Luxembourgish herself! She did, however, live the expat experience both in India and Japan. She moved to Japan for her husband’s job when her kids were very little. Two years old and a three month old! On a long haul flight, without her husband!!
As she settled into Japan, she realized she didn’t love the stay at home mom experience. She knew Japan was temporary, she didn’t speak the language and she wanted to do something that was flexible and fun that would get her out of the house, so she linked up with another mom friend and together they bought a workout franchise geared toward women. She loved the energy the women brought, supporting one another to reach their fitness goals in a non-judgemental way.
When she returned to Luxembourg, she figured she’d go back to her original profession which was physiotherapy. She quickly realized that she needed the camaraderie and teamwork her classes brought. So she started her own business, Shape Up Luxembourg, which is an outdoor workout class for women specializing in workouts for pregnant and postpartum women. Episode 2
For Katie's entire adult life, she was first and foremost a professional business woman, defining much of her identity by her career successes. Moving here, however, she found herself with a new title of 'trailing spouse,' and, not being an EU national, was actually not allowed to work!
This was a monumental shift in her life and that, compounded by a 'Big Birthday,' brought up some big feelings. This episode is all about how Katie was able to redefine who she is by going back to her roots of volunteerism and finding her tribe through giving back to the community.
Katie is currently the Head of Membership at the American Women's Club of Luxembourg.
