#111: In this episode of Money Noticias podcast, hosts Sunem and Israel Tovar are joined by Alfredo Matos.
Alfredo started pursuing big goals early in his youth. He attended CROEM, a public boarding school for talented students from which he graduated high school at 16. He started engineering school immediately in Mayagüez but he paused college to join the Army as a Guardsman. He attended boot camp at 17 and the Army deployed him during the Global War on Terrorism, becoming a veteran at 18 years old.
In his mid 20s, after graduating engineering school, Alfredo moved from Puerto Rico to Georgia and started his professional career in the nuclear industry, with about $45,000 in debt. After a while leading a typical suburban life in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Alfredo realized something was missing. He had a great income, but there was no freedom. Alfredo found that he and his wife had fell in a trap called “the rat race”. The more money they earned, the more they would spend, and most people around them were deeply in debt. But they had both come from low income families and knew that they wanted to change their family tree. Alfredo started budgeting, eliminating debt aggressively, investing in real estate and investing in the stock market. This resulted in achieving "Coast Financial Independence" in their mid-thirties. When Alfredo started sharing with others what had worked for them, more and more people asked him for one-on-one help. He fell in love with the opportunity to change people’s lives through financial empowerment and eventually left engineering to become a full time financial coach.
In 2024, they moved back to Puerto Rico where Alfredo now supports small business owners helping them develop and retain talent through his workplace financial wellness program called “Invierte En Tu Gente”.
