It seems fitting that this first episode (which is really just a partial episode), starts with Pioneer Days in Scobey this coming weekend, June 23-25. Because really, this entire podcast is about this vast Eastern Montana Prairie Frontier.... where it began, how far we've come, and the challenges that still arise from living in the middle of nowhere,.. on the edge.
In this episode, I visit with Felix Gilbertson, a Daniels County Museum board member, about the famed Pioneer Days celebration, the Dirty Shame Show, our agricultural heritage, and the things that make small town living in NE Montana so special.
If you've never attended Pioneer Days in Pioneer Town at the West edge of Scobey, you're in for a treat. Turn of the century buildings, an old style saloon, breakfast (with the best homemade chokecherry syrup you'll ever have) in restored cook shack 'cars', a parade full of restored tractors, cars & trucks, and of course, the Dirty Shame Show at the glorious Rex Theater, featuring the infamous dancing Dirty Shame Belles are all included in the busy weekend-- and you'll need two days to take it all in!
New to the line-up, Friday night features an outdoor concert on the Museum grounds, complete with food vendors and a beer garden. And this year, the Museum board scored a coup and booked the duo Tigirlily Gold just before their most recent singles sent them to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and landed them as a regular on Sirius XM radio. You won't want to miss this concert!
Admission to the museum grounds is free Saturday and Sunday, and there's plenty to see and do-- including a black powder shoot, working blacksmith shop, and tours of the period buildings on the grounds. But you'll need tickets to get in the gate Friday nite for the Tirgirlily Gold concert, and for any of the 4 *mostly* identical Dirty Shame Show performances. You can call the Museum office at (406) 487-5965 to reserve tickets,...but don't wait, DSS shows can sell out, and concert tickets are going fast!
