The Candace Mossler trilogy concludes. Parts 1 and 2 of this classic are available now! Allow us to reintroduce Candace Mossler. Author Ron Smith wrote the excellent true crime book "No One Is Perfect: The True Story of Candace Mossler And America's Strangest Murder Trial." Muriel got her hands on this book back in October 2021 and quickly realized this is the exact kind of story that made her want to do this podcast in the first place. So she busted out a three part series and we loved it. Then like two years later, author Ron Smith hit us up on Instagram and was very supportive and complimentary about what we did. And since it's one of our favorites, we wanted to reair the whole thing. Part 3 of 3.

Unlocked from the M'sMs exclusive vault! How do normal, decent folks get swept up in fascism? One groovy history teacher back in the '60s tried out an experiment on his high school students to see if he could transform peace-loving California surfer kids into fascists. The results shocked the world and the lessons are still mandatory curriculum in Germany and Isreal to this day.

Nick interviews the legendary artist, documentarian, and creative force madman extraordinaire Hudson Marquez. Interrupting our regularly scheduled true crime program, this episode of the podcast Formerly Known As Hella is a special treat for all you art lovers, music historians, and anyone hungry for a first class ticket to a wild ride of American history.
Get ready for tales of old school French Quarter dankness, Ant Farm, TVTV, hippies infiltrating the news media, Professor Longhair, Cadillacs buried in the desert, Bill Murray, the LA art world, and how Dick Tracy comic strips lead a kid from New Orleans down the path to creative glory.
Special thanks to Susan.

1930s feminism, old timey adoption ethics, extreme classism, a respected woman way ahead of her time going hard in the paint with some batshit theories, a professional violinist and a carnival man. Muriel can't believe it took her this long to finally cover this case, but here it is. RIP Rita.
This is a PERFECT time to support this lil show, check out www.murielsmurders.com/support for BRILLIANT ways to do so.
Take care,

The Milwaukee Police were up to some pretty drastic stuff in the early 80s, and Laurie Bembenek wanted in the boys club. Rampant partying, racism, misogyny, nachos, disco, wild jack off parties in broad daylight, boozing, some friendly fire, some not so friendly brutality, and tons of sexy hooking up. According to stats, Milwaukee had one of the lowest crime rates in the country. This story digs into the asterisk next to that statistic. Multiple RIPs in this one. Part 1 of 2.

Pure intrigue! Tension! Behind the scenes of Hitchcock's masterpiece film "The Birds!" Sadistic "pranks!" Terrible senses of "humor!" And the best part... (for Nick)...? No murder! Is this actually a true crime story? Kinda sorta, but it's true Muriel's Murders, that's for sure.

Stingbean Akeman is an absolute bango-playing, Hee Haw comedy legend. He was a beloved innovator at the Grand Ole Opry, beast on the baseball field and loved stashing cash. He married Estelle who cruised around in brand new Cadillacs, never bothered living with indoor plumbing and also loved stashing cash. These two love birds were brutally, tragically taken from this Earthly existence by a tiny crew of dumbass haters who suffered tragedies of their own. Muriel does it like she always does and hips Nick to the history and world that makes this story one of kind. RIP Stringbean. RIP Estelle.

...and her remarkable survival! This is only the second episode that made Nick tear up a lil bit. This young woman was so brave and her story is uplifting even though she was buried alive. Of course, the kidnappers are ludicrous villains and the Mackles are pretty incredible. Muriel wrote the hell out of this one so plug in and float away.

Harvard in the 1800s was jammed full of dead bodies. But all the professors there were "doctors" and "gentlemen" and there's no way any of them would murder someone and try to hide the evidence amongst all the "science." This is old timey mania in its full glory, so hold onto your butts in accordance with the scriptures. Part 1 of 2. Requested by Bill! Thanks man!
