When I first recorded this episode it was in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary that was preceded by the supermarket shooting days earlier. With gun violence on the rise, more mass shootings, war in many countries, there is no time better than now to help our kids understand and make sense of what seems like senseless violence. Please listen to my brilliant guest, Barbara Rubel and how she shares her own story and provides us with a path forward for us and our kids.
Please listen and please share.
Gun violence has been heavy on everyone’s mind with the horrific massacre at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York and just ten days later, the shooting of innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. It makes sense that you have feelings about what’s happened and are grieving the loss of life and innocence whether you know the victims or not.
As parents, it hits us especially hard when we see innocent children killed. Sending our kids to school brings up anxiety and fear in us, and our sense of safety is gone.
How do we live with the anxiety and fear we are all feeling?
How do we make sense out of senseless violence?
How do we make meaning out of something so tragic?
Barbara Rubel, as a Thanatologist, is an expert in death, dying and bereavement. She helps people cope with, and move on from, sudden traumatic loss.
Barbara and I talk about how we can process these tragedies, grieve the loss of the innocent lives, explain what’s happened to our kids, take care of ourselves at this time and move through the pain.
I have enormous respect for the work Barbara does, and I know you will love what she has to share. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have to have these hard conversations with our kids. When you go to them, stay rooted in your strengths, explain death in a way that’s age appropriate and aligned with your beliefs, and it’s ok to show emotions to your children. Feeling sad is normal and natural, this IS sad.

Bedwetting is no joke when it impacts your child. In fact, my guest on this episode, considers it a “life spoiling issue.” It’s not just your child wetting the bed, it’s our reaction to it that is usually based in fear and leads us to shame or punish the child.
Before you read any further, you must know that this is NOT.YOUR.CHILD’S.FAULT nor is it your fault! Let’s end the shame and punishments around bedwetting here.
My guest is Dr. Danielle Sweeney, of Austin, Texas who is a Pediatric Urologist and is a faculty member at Texas Children’s Hospital. She wants every parent and caregiver to know that bed wetting isn’t intentional, it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the child and more children struggle with bedwetting than you know, even into the teen years.
In this episode, Dr. Sweeney explains that bedwetting is tied to your child’s development and how children develop at different speeds. She also discusses why it happens, what to do if your child starts wetting the bed, what issues might be going on and other medical issues that might get in the way.

What’s for dinner? The question that is asked around the world in every single
family! For me personally, it’s enough to make my head spin. I know many of my listeners struggle with dinner planning, options and variety. Thankfully we have people like Jessica Formicola to help us navigate meal decision paralysis!
My guest is founder of Savory Experiments, former Psychotherapist, food critic, TV
personality and mom to two, Jessica Formicola. She is helping us to reframe how we can be in the kitchen and ditch the “I need to make dinner,” to “we are making dinner together” and cook together as a family. In fact, our kids are more likely to eat what is served if they helped create it!
We are talking about using the 4’s in cooking which include, salt, seasonings,
sauces/swaps, and the 5 senses and how they enrich your meals and level up the
taste. What I love about Jessica is that she doesn’t see anything wrong with frozen pizza or
mac and cheese in your meal rotation! She makes them too, does drive thru on busy nights and wants you not to feel bad if you need a quick meal solution! Hint, for all you busy families, she suggests casseroles to make your life easier!

Apart from our 5 senses, we have THREE MORE that we were most likely never taught about! I always say that parenting is the hardest, most important job we do and we do it with no training or basic understanding about the way the brain, nervous system or sensory system works (not to mention developmental stages) so it’s no wonder we are so often perplexed at our kids’ behaviors!
Thankfully, guests like I have on this episode are rockstars at helping us help our kids who have sensory challenges! Meet Rachel and Jessica of Harkla and the podcast, All Things Sensory Podcast.
Why is it so important to understand the sensory system? Because we all have one and we can all benefit from better regulation of it AND it will help your kids with sensitivities understand themselves better so they have live happier and healthier lives.
In this episode we talk about SPD, Autism, and ADHD. What works when kids are seeking or avoiding sensory input and when you should elevate your concerns for a diagnosis with your doctor. And lets not forget, when we have challenging kiddos, as many of us do, we need to remember to take care of our needs too.

In this episode of "Parenting Our Future," I am talking to one of my most favorite people in the world! I’m so excited to share my conversation with the wonderful Katie Keen, a homeschooling expert and advocate. Join me as we explore the world of homeschooling and discover some amazing hacks that can make this educational journey a success for your family.
In this episode, we delve into the world of homeschooling with Katie, who shares her valuable insights and practical hacks. We discuss how homeschooling is not about copying traditional schools but creating a unique and flexible educational environment that suits your family. From the concept of "strewing" to meeting emotional needs, Katie provides valuable tips for parents interested in homeschooling. So whether you're considering homeschooling or just seeking effective parenting advice, tune in to this episode and discover a wealth of knowledge to help you on your journey.
Some of the key takeaways that Katie shares is that homeschooling is a unique educational choice that comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. Every family's situation is different, and what works for one may not work for another. The beauty of homeschooling lies in finding what's best for your children and your family specifically. It's about tailoring an educational adventure that caters to your children's individual needs and interests rather than trying to replicate the traditional school environment.
Throughout the homeschooling journey, grace and flexibility play vital roles. Embrace the freedom of adapting schedules, curricula, and approaches to suit your family's evolving needs. Remember that homeschooling is not just a different way of learning; it's a lifestyle that allows your family to grow together intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare…to find out someone has physically or sexually abused your child. It’s gut wrenching, heartbreaking; enraging. Unfortunately it’s a topic we have to talk to our children about so they know what to do, and who to tell. But of course, it’s not as easy as that.
My guest, Dr. Tiffanie Tate is an abuse survivor who wants to help parents and kids to know what to do if they are faced with the unthinkable. In this episode we talk about what to do if someone tries to touch you (from the child’s perspective), who is a safe adult to talk to that will take action on their behalf, and that under no circumstances it’s ever the child’s fault.
We talk about this and so much more. It’s a heavy topic but Dr. Tiffanie, has a beautiful way of simplifying it so you can feel comfortable talking to your kids about it.
One thing to mention, is that you won’t necessarily know if a child has or is being abused so sharing Dr. Tiffanie’s book, handout and this episode, will really help someone. Please share with the loved ones in your life.
For Dr. Tiffanie’s handout on how to help your child after they have been abused. from her book Flowetry , you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com
About Dr. Tiffanie Tate
Dr. Tiffanie Tate is a board certified Obgyn who pursued writing as her passion after she was medically retired after sustaining a hand injury. Her first book was titled FloweTry: a collection of 108 Poetic Flows on Life, Love, and Liturgical Issues. That book was written to inspire and encourage people. She loves to give back to the community and is often giving lectures in the community or to medical residents on different topics. She is an active member in her local church and sorority and is a is a veteran officer of the United States Navy. Her current book Bad Touching is to help children understand and report abuse. She will have another children’s book published later this year to help children address bullying.

We all know that divorce can cause trauma in your children’s lives but there is a way through that doesn’t have to leave a path of destruction in its wake.
My guest, Janet Price, is helping divorced and divorcing couples do exactly that. She helps parents to consciously co-parent so they can rise above pettiness, and build skills to communicate and build strong and lasting relationships.
Parenting is hard enough without adding in the stress of a broken marriage, so taking the time to be conscious and not turn your back on the “normal parenting” needed, will help you in ways that are invaluable. We can’t forget that families are forever even if there is a divorce!

Get ready to meet ADHD Royalty, Peter Shankman! He is known globally for his entrepreneurial prowess, and work on educating himself and the world about ADHD. I’ve known of Peter’s work for years and it’s truly an honour to speak with him!
He wants both kids and parents to know that a diagnosis of ADHD doesn’t mean you’re broken, but brilliant! That if you have an ADHD brain, you have been given a gift of a brain that’s equal to a Ferrari, but society and the school system wants these kids to fit into a “Honda Accord” brain! I love that metaphor, and if you have a kiddo with this diagnosis, you know exactly what he’s talking about!
Peter’s message to parents is that neurodiversity brings gifts and we need to have unwavering love, support and advocacy for our kids. Using this superpower for good means we focus on feeding that brain with exercise, protein, nutrition and calming techniques.
For a download of Peter’s article, Ten Ways to be Happier When You Live/Love Someone Diagnosed With ADHD, visit the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com
About Peter Shankman
Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you find the best traits of ADHD and work really hard to make them benefit you. By the time Peter was diagnosed as ADHD he had started and sold two companies and realized that all the differences that formerly labeled him as a troublemaker were actually his greatest assets. After Peter sold his third company, (Help a Reporter Out,) he decided to focus on really understanding this “faster brain” of his, and learning exactly what it could do. From that, the "Faster Than Normal" podcast and bestselling book of the same name were born. Since then, Peter has written numerous best-selling books and “Faster than Normal” is the Internet's #1 podcast on ADHD. Peter believes that everyone has gifts, potential, and abilities far beyond what society has deemed “normal,” and strives to help bring those gifts to life in as many people as he can.

I'm back with Dana Kay from the ADHD Thrive Institute. Today, we're diving into some helpful tips on reducing ADHD symptoms naturally. If you missed our previous chat on diet and nutrition, you will find the link to that episode below.
In this episode, we are talking about inflammation, the root of many health issues, including ADHD symptoms. Diet plays a role, but there's more to it. Chronic inflammation is becoming more common, affecting our kids' bodies and brains, even contributing to diseases.
Imagine your body as a bucket, and chronic inflammation keeps filling it up. We need to reduce the load to avoid overflow and health problems. Technology is one factor adding to that load. Kids are surrounded by screens all the time.
Stats show that 94% of US kids have internet access, and high schoolers spend up to 11 hours a day with digital tech. It's crazy! Excessive screen time can mess with social skills, relationships, and attention span which are common symptoms of ADHD, which we are trying to ease in the first place. It’s not all doom and gloom, it’s all about balance.
Listen in as we talk about other things that could be making ADHD symptoms worse for your child. Dana is a wealth of information!

I like to share guests and stories that are uplifting, helpful and inspiring but sometimes a subject is so important that it needs a special focus.
The crisis that’s taking place in the adoption and foster care system is something my guest, Jenell Jones knows all too well. A mom of seven; three bio, two bonus (step child and nephew) and two adopted kids has shown her how broken the system is.
Jenell explains why this is an EVERYBODY PROBLEM because these kids are our future, and their future looks bleak because of repeated traumas, neglect, and abuse. We need to all take a look at what’s going on because the sad truth is that if something doesn’t happen to change the systems, these kids are the future of homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction, incarceration, and crime.
We can all play a part in solving this problem by first talking about it and bringing it to light. And when you see a child in crisis, please approach with compassion and curiosity.
For Jenell Jones’ “Parenting the Parentified Child”
article, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com
About Jenell Jones
Jenell M. Jones is an early education entrepreneur, currently operating multiple early learning centers, which specialize in providing high quality learning experiences to children who experience trauma in low-income areas. Educational environments for students with disabilities range from a complete denial of formal educational services to equal participation in all aspects of the education system. Educational experiences of students with disabilities fall into one of four categories: exclusion, segregation, integration and inclusive. (from the Alana Report)
My guest today is director and filmmaker, Olivier Bernier, who among many attributes, is the dad to 6-year-old Emilio, who was born with Down Syndrome. In his work, he naturally wanted to document his son’s experience entering into school, only to find out that Emilio was being segregated from the general school population. This lead Olivier on a journey to advocate, and educate people on the importance of inclusion in schools for every child regardless of ability.
In his film, “Forget Me Not”, he looks at the way our kids are being taught, and how the outdated system isn’t set up to nurture and teach every child. He shares how inclusiveness is beneficial to ALL children and the research backs up that claim.
If you or someone you know has a child that has learning differences, been segregated, or you aren’t getting the support you need, you will want to listen to this episode and watch, “Forget Me Not.”
For Olivier’s The Alana Report – a summary of the evidence on inclusive education, developed by some of the foremost experts in the field. This report serves as a thorough and accessible primer on the topic of inclusion, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com

You might not think this episode is for you…but I PROMISE you, you will want to hear it! I am forever changed by this conversation with my guest, Chris Jankulovski. As I write these show notes, after our conversation, I’m vibrating with excitement, gratitude, inspiration and love.
Chris has a very rare condition that (along with some teenage shenanigans), have caused him to have EIGHT near death experiences. He has gone from complaining about life, his condition, adversities, and limitations, to finding his purpose, and living a life of fulfillment, gratitude and joy.
In this episode we talk about focusing on what you CAN control, versus what you CAN’T. In other words, embracing the fact that all you can control is your thoughts and actions, the rest…well, that is where acceptance comes in! I know it’s not that easy but, in a way, it can be that simple.
Chris and I talk about life, and parenthood and he shares what’s needed to live a deliberate life. These steps include: Stop running from life’s problems
Have clarity of our true desires
Embrace and notice that we are on autopilot most of the time and how important being intentional is
Sprinkle in acceptance, hope, gratitude, and time to reflect and you have the recipe for a more fulfilling life. But let me tell you, there is so much more wisdom packed into this conversation. I am forever grateful and changed from it and I hope you are too!

It's no surprise that so many of us have been struggling with our mental health for all the reasons you already know. Growing up today is no joke and we are all navigating a generation of kids who have never not had a device, access to the internet or social media.
My guest is Dr. Deborah Offner, a child psychologist and author, provides valuable insights and strategies for parents and teachers. Our conversation highlights the importance of understanding children's perception of parental stress, the significance of parental involvement during the adolescent years, and the need for collaboration between parents and teachers. Additionally, the episode addresses the challenges faced by teachers, including secondary trauma and compassion fatigue, and emphasizes the role of teachers as first responders in children's lives.
This episode is all about recognizing that we have been impacted and what we can do about it.

This interview blew my mind!! You are going to love it! And not only that, you’re going to want to share it with everyone you know!
Cyber security expert, Maria-Kristina is my guest and not only does she have an impressive resume (worked at the Pentagon to name one), she is so fun to talk to! We are talking about how to protect your family from cyber criminals.
Maria-Kristina breaks things down in a really simple to understand way which is one of the reasons I love her! We talk about the two main areas of risk to look out for, how to be the “Chief Information Officer” of your home, and what to do if you have been involved in a cyber security breach.
In this episode, we talk about teaching our kids to have a “general scepticism”, to notice if they feel fear or shame when interacting online, and using those feelings as a red flag to alert them that something’s not right. It’s time to talk to our kids about ai and deep fakes because they are becoming more and more common and sophisticated. She also suggests that we use the “grocery store rule” in sharing personal information with others.

It’s pretty obvious that when your child has sleep issues, you take them to the dentist…right? Well, as counterintuitive as that might sound, it might be the one thing you never knew about that could literally change your life, and most importantly, your child’s!
Sleep is a HUGE issue for parents from the moment our kids are born all the way through the teen years. I talk to my clients frequently about sleep strategies for their kids who resist going to sleep, have regular pop ups, nightly wakings, and wake up too early in the morning. When your kids aren’t sleeping, nobody’s sleeping and that can spiral into parents being exhausted, irritable, and short tempered and for your kids, they can be dysregulated, unfocused, and much more challenging to parent.
Perhaps one of the last things you’ll look at is the relationship between sleep and dentistry but there is a huge connection and seeing the right dentist can radically change the quality of your child’s sleep.
My guest is Dr Meghna Dassani, who, in her Sleep Dentistry practice, is helping her young patients end their interrupted sleep, sleep apnea, and sleep disordered breathing. She and I have the most interesting conversation where we talk about how poor-quality sleep impacts health, behavior and IQ.
Did you know that sleep disorders show up with the same symptoms as ADHD? I had no idea! Asking for a sleep study will help you to see what’s really going on. Some things parents can look for as signs your child might have a sleep issue, are:
● Snoring/audible breathing
● Messy sleeper
● Always tired in the morning
● Bed wetting
I hope you find this episode as eye opening as I did!
For a free copy of the first chapter of Meghna’s book, The Tired Child, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com

Dr. Dassani is passionate about helping children achieve healthy sleep. In her Houston-area sleep dentistry practice, she helps her pediatric patients breathe better every day. A tireless advocate for children, she continues to research new methods to help her pediatric patients achieve healthy, restful sleep that allows them to learn and grow.

If you want a boost of positivity, enthusiasm and encouragement, you have come to the right episode! I’m over the moon excited to introduce you to the three women behind, “I Believe in Me” which is a mentorship program for tween girls!
We are hearing it more and more, that mental health in girls is declining because of multiple factors. When we can reach them during the adolescent years, and equip them with empowering messages, mindset tools, and strategies to handle difficult situations, it sets them up to move through these turbulent years with confidence and resilience!
My guests, Katie, Becky and Allie are the masterminds behind “I Believe in Me” and these are the kind of mentors your daughter needs. In fact, what they are teaching girls are universal truths that they will take with them for the rest of their lives! Moms can learn a lot from their teachings as well!
In this episode, we talk about how to grow, tend and maintain their “garden” through building self-esteem, positivity, understanding their emotions, sharing their unique gifts, building confidence and handling adversity. Their 4C’s to eliminating “weeds” are things we can all do and teach both our girls and boys!
The 4 C’s are too good not to share here!

I know the subject of racism makes many people uncomfortable; myself included. As a white woman, I am trying to better understand the history of racism in North America and how it has created our present reality.
In this episode, I’m talking to David Mura, who is an accomplished writer and subject matter expert. He and I discuss what “whiteness” is and some of the roots of racism in America, that goes back as far as the 1800’s when social scientists declared “blackness” criminal. We talk about how access to land ownership was restricted to Caucasians by the federal government in the 1930’s, and post WWII, how medical myths are still prevalent in today’s doctor’s offices and hospitals. We also touch on Critical Race Theory, what it is and if it should be taught to our children.
David brings up the past in order for us to understand how it informs our present. He wants to enact change, not through shame and guilt, but through love and knowledge. Simply put, we want to teach our kids to have an open heart and mind when it comes to other cultures, and people of differing backgrounds and beliefs.
There can be no hate when we are curious and open. Can you challenge your beliefs, bias and thoughts? Curiosity and openness are what can pave the way for more understanding and less fear and hate.
I hope you find this episode helpful as you navigate this complex issue with your children.
For David’s article, “How to Raise Anti-Racist Children” you can download it from the Parent Toolbox at www.parent-toolbox.com
