They discuss the importance of losing in past seasons for teams on track to win the NBA Finals, sharing past elite teams that succeeded after multiple years of losing. • Vincent Goodwill connects with Yahoo NBA writer Tom Haberstroh to recap a wild Game 1 between the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics. The two dissect why the Celtics should be concerned despite pulling out the win and discuss if winning an NBA title is now just about being the healthiest team in the end.

(1:00) - Pacers choked away Game 1... but should they have confidence going forward?

(18:00) - Jayson Tatum's identity crisis: Is he running out of gas or just not 'it'?

(29:30) - Survival of the fittest: The NBA’s Final Four are largely here because of health

(38:33) - Does this injury trend change the way teams should construct themselves for a long run?

To start the pod, Goodwill and Haberstroh look at how the Indiana Pacers choked away Game 1 in Boston. Despite the loss, Haberstroh thinks Indiana should have confidence heading into Game 2 and can actually compete with the Celtics in this series.

Goodwill ponders if Jayson Tatum is going through an identity crisis with his game. Even though he scored over 30 points in Game 1, Haberstroh shares some concerning 'under the hood' stats that show Tatum is struggling in playoffs games when they matter most.

After the break, Haberstroh shares some data that confirms we are experiencing the most injury riddled postseason in over a decade. Goodwill wonders if this is just a trend or just a part of the game now. Both agree teams will likely begin to construct their rosters differently to combat the uptick in injuries in the NBA.

(46:30) - Reporters clashing with coaches in today's NBA media environment

(51:30) - Championship or bust: Why all the pressure is on Boston and Jayson Tatum

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill connects with Boston Globe's national NBA writer Gary Washburn to recap the Game 7s on Sunday and the Mavericks win over the Thunder on Saturday. The two also look ahead to both conference finals and how each could play out.

Goodwill starts the pod by recapping what he saw in person in Denver as the Timberwolves took out the defending champs. Washburn and Goodwill break down what went wrong for the Nuggets in their second half collapse and why the supporting cast for Denver wasn't enough for them to repeat as champs this season.

The two then recap the Mavericks win over the Thunder on Saturday night and ponder if Oklahoma City has staying power to be a consistent contender in the West going forward. Washburn and Goodwill think the Western Conference Finals between the Mavericks and Timberwolves will be a coin flip series. Goodwill does give a slight edge to one team and makes his subtle prediction for who he sees making it to The Finals.

After the break, the two discuss what went wrong for the Knicks down the stretch and if Coach Thibodeau's style is to blame for all the injuries that doomed New York in the playoffs. Both wonder if Thib's style will work long term in today's NBA and in New York.

The two end the show previewing the Eastern Conference Finals and explain why all the pressure is on Boston and Jayson Tatum to finish the job and win the title this summer.

  • Jake Fischer and Dan Devine discuss how the Dallas Mavericks won game 5 in Oklahoma City and talk about the offseason rumors swirling at the NBA Draft Combine.

    (00:00) - Hello friends!

(01:50) - Mavs win in OKC, take 3-2 series lead

(15:50) - Celtics advanced to Eastern Conference Finals

    (22:30) - What’s next for the Cavaliers?

    (43:40) - Hawks offseason rumors

(49:30) - Will the Spurs trade for Trae Young?

    (56:10) - Lakers offseason rumors

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine are tired and rooting for the NBA Playoffs to end as soon as possible.

They also love basketball! And they go into great detail to explain how the Dallas Mavericks have turned into a defensive nightmare for the young Oklahoma City Thunder, leading to a win-or-go-home game 6 on the road for OKC on Saturday.

The Boston Celtics easily advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, raising concerns about if they will be playoff tough when they need to be. They have yet to face a real challenge, and everyone wants to know how they will respond if they go down early against a good NBA team.

Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers have a lot to figure out this offseason, starting with if he wants to sign a contract extension and what changes he wants to the coaching staff or roster going forward. If J.B.Bickerstaff ends up losing his job, who is the right coach for this job?

Jake is at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, and he’s picking up plenty of rumors and buzz from NBA coaches and front office members that are also there. That leads to a conversation about what the Atlanta Hawks should be doing this offseason, if a trade of Trae Young to the Spurs makes sense for either team and what hints the Lakers are dropping about who their next head coach will be.

  • Vincent Goodwill checks in from Denver after watching the Nuggets take game 5 from the Timberwolves to break down the NBA Playoffs and the Lakers coaching search.

    (0:00) - Introduction

(19:00) - Knicks beat Pacers (NYK leads series 3-2)

(23:40) - Thunder vs. Mavericks game 5 preview

(35:30) - Celtics vs. Cavaliers game 5 preview

(37:50) - LeBron James shows up in Cleveland

    (42:30) - Lakers coaching search

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill talks about what it was like to watch the Denver Nuggets’ game 5 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in person.

Nikola Jokic was brilliant on offense, which really helped to open up the floor for the rest of his teammates, but Vinnie wonders if the Minnesota Timberwolves are the better team that just hasn’t yet realized they’re better than the Nuggets.

The New York Knicks bullied and bludgeoned the Indiana Pacers in game 5 to take control of that series, against what most people were expecting from them, and we use it as an excuse to call out Tom Thibodeau’s excellent coaching.

Producer John is bummed about his Dallas Mavericks dropping game 4, and the guys talk about how and why the Oklahoma City Thunder are presenting defensive problems for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Vince talks about the Boston Celtics, who have not yet been tested and might make it all the way to the NBA Finals without being tested. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

On the Cleveland side, LeBron James showed up courtside to game 4 and got a standing ovation from the crowd. Is he planning another free agent jump to his hometown team? Or just looking for attention?

Finally, Vinnie talks about the Lakers head coaching search and why the inexperienced guys they’re interviewing face a tough challenge with a LeBron-led Lakers team.

  • Vincent Goodwill is joined by Jake Fischer to recap the NBA Playoffs action from the weekend before talking with Krysten Peek about the 2024 NBA Draft.

    00:00 - Introduction

00:40 - Suns fire Vogel, hire Budenholzer

08:20 - Nuggets vs. Timberwolves (series tied 2-2)

18:10 - Knicks vs. Pacers (series tied 2-2)

25:00 - Thunder vs. Mavericks (DAL leads series 2-1)

32:40 - Celtics vs. Cavaliers (BOS leads series 2-1)

    39:45 - 2024 NBA Draft

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporters Vincent Goodwill and Jake Fischer talk about all four of the Conference Semifinals, which could all be locked at 2-2 after tonight.

The guys start in Minnesota, because that’s where Vince is, and talk about the Denver Nuggets looking like the unbeatable champs once again in their last two games against the Timberwolves.

They then move on to the Indiana Pacers, who have taken advantage of the New York Knicks team that seems to be running out of luck and healthy bodies. Can the Madison Square Garden crowd will their team to a game 5 win and keep hope alive?

Moving to the Western Conference, Vinnie takes a moment to gloat about being one of the very few people to have picked the Dallas Mavericks to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in this series. Jake was there, and he said that it looks like the young OKC team is starting to wilt under the pressure of the NBA Playoffs.

The Boston Celtics slipped up in game 2, yet again, but roared back in game 3 to show that they still don’t have a decent challenger in the Eastern Conference. How can we trust them to handle high pressure games when they haven’t played in one all year?

Finally, Yahoo Sports NBA Draft Analyst Krysten Peek joins the show, the day after the draft lottery, to discuss her updated mock draft and talk about what is going on with Bronny James at the NBA Scouting Combine this week.

    55:15 - Los Angeles Clippers

    59:30 - Orlando Magic

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine recap yet another close win for the New York Knicks over the Indiana Pacers from all angles.

The guys discuss Jalen Brunson returning from injury to lead the team to victory, Josh Hart playing every minute of every game, and even Pacers coach Rick Carlisle complaining about the refs and claiming that his small-market team is getting a raw deal because they’re playing against a large-market team in the Knicks.

Speaking of coaches, Jake goes deep on how head coaches are employing challenges during the NBA Playoffs and how that usage differs from the regular season before talking about the Charlotte Hornets hiring Charles Lee as their new head coach and letting listeners in on some of the coaching rumors that he’s heard.

Since the last episode of No Cap Room, four teams have been eliminated from the NBA Playoffs. The guys try to answer one important question for each one of them as a way to say goodbye to all of them.

Should the Bucks be worried about Giannis’ age and injury history? What kind of player should the 76ers acquire this offseason? Is it over for the Clippers? And is it Anthony Black time in Orlando?

All of that, and more, on this very fun episode of No Cap Room.

  • Vincent Goodwill and Tom Haberstroh talk about the Thunder and Celtics taking game 1 of their series and discuss issues with NBA officiating.

    00:00 - Introduction

    01:45 - Thunder 117, Mavericks 95 (OKC leads series 1-0)

    23:30 - Celtics 120, Cavaliers 95 (BOS leads series 1-0)

    26:50 - Knicks / Pacers officiating

    33:25 - Jalen Brunson

    40:30 - Timberwolves / Nuggets officiating

48:00 - Top 5 NBA Playoffs breakout performances

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by NBA analyst Tom Haberstroh to talk about everything that’s going on in the NBA Playoffs Conference Semifinals.

The guys start in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder defense looked too big, too strong and too energetic for Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks to handle. Are the Thunder just the better team or is Luka’s high usage rate going to sink the Mavericks?

As expected, the Boston Celtics cruised to an easy victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, even without Kristaps Porzingis. Vinnie and Tom talk about Jayson Tatum, who has been Boston’s 3rd best player amidst a poor playoff run by him and it hasn’t mattered at all. Tom wonders if he’s just keeping himself fresh for the later rounds.

The end of game 1 between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers was a mess due to inconsistent officiating. Tom and Vince talk about what calls they wish were, or weren’t, called and why the players are right to complain about the refs in this postseason.

Jalen Brunson, similar to Luka Doncic, has been carrying a high usage rate for the Knicks and the guys are wondering how long he’ll be able to keep it up. Tom digs through the stats to show that, historically, offenses built around one player with a high usage rate doesn’t typically equal playoff success.

Back to the officiating, Tom wants to talk about what happened in game 2 between the Nuggets and Timberwolves because he has a theory as to why Jamal Murray felt empowered to throw a towel and a heat pack at a referee. Meanwhile, Vinnie has a theory as to why Michael Malone wasn’t given a technical foul when he was screaming in the same ref’s face.

Finally, Producer John asks the guys to give their Top 5 best playoff breakout performances. The type of games that announce to the world that a new star is taking over the league and the old star’s time is done, similar to what Anthony Edwards did to Kevin Durant in round 1 this year. And, as per usual, the guys go digging in the crates and find examples from the 80s and 90s.

On this episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Adam Mares from DNVR to try and figure out what has happened to the reigning champs that has them down 2-0 in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

But first, Dan asks Adam to list something from the world of basketball that is bringing him joy and Adam picks….the Minnesota Timberwolves! They’re playing great basketball right now and are a joy to watch, even if they’re beating the team that Adam roots for.

Dan and Adam then have a long conversation about a number of things that have gone wrong in Denver this year and seem to be causing issues for the Nuggets since the start of the NBA Playoffs. Can the Nuggets win if Jamal Murray doesn’t get better? Will Jamal Murray be suspended? Are we sure the GM and head coach are on the same page? What if this roster has just expired and nobody realized it yet?

Before moving on to The Closing Five and weekly recommendations, the guys take a few minutes to talk about Anthony Edwards, who appears to be one of the best leaders in the entire NBA despite being just 22-years old. • Vincent Goodwill and The Athletic’s Fred Katz talk through the Cavaliers game 7 win on Sunday, the offseason ahead of the Magic (and Lakers) and preview the Knicks / Pacers 2nd round series.

    00:00 - Introduction

02:40 - Cavs beat Magic, win series

    10:10 - What’s next for the Magic?

21:20 - Knicks vs. Pacers series preview

40:40 - Lakers search for a new head coach

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill welcomes Fred Katz from The Athletic to the show.

The NBA Playoffs have officially moved past the first round and into the Conference Semifinals, with the last game taking place on Sunday between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic.

The Cavaliers won the game, and probably saved a few people from getting fired, on the strength of another outstanding playoff performance by Donovan Mitchell.

The Magic, meanwhile, played like a young team when the game mattered most. But that’s because they are a young team! And they have lots of opportunities to improve their roster in the upcoming offseason. Vince and Fred talk about what they liked, and didn’t like, from the Magic and what they are looking for on the trade and free agent markets for Orlando.

Fred is about as locked in as you can be to the New York Knicks, so he’s the perfect guy to help us preview their Conference Semifinal series against the Indiana Pacers. The guys hit this series from all angles and wonder how the Pacers will try to play defense against Jalen Brunson.

Finally, the Los Angeles Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham on Friday. There are rumors swirling that LeBron James’ podcast co-host JJ Redick could be a candidate to replace him. Vince and Fred talk through the people they think are candidates and wonder who would be the best fit for this high-pressure job.

  • Jake Fischer and Dan Devine recap last night’s Mavericks win over the Clippers and wonder what comes next for the Heat, Suns and 76ers.

    00:00 - Hello friends!

01:45 - Mavs dominate Clippers (DAL leads 3-2)

    15:50 - What’s next for the Heat?

29:00 - VIBE CHECK: Phoenix Suns

51:05 - Series Preview: Nuggets vs. Timberwolves

    64:00 - What’s next for the 76ers?

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine have fun while getting you up to speed on the NBA Playoffs.

The guys start in Los Angeles, where the Clippers are facing the potential of a pretty grim offseason after falling down 3-2 to the Dallas Mavericks. James Harden looked like the version that gets him criticism in the playoffs while the Dallas defense looked up to the task of shutting down the Clippers offense.

The Miami Heat were once again blown out by Boston, this time leading to a 4-1 series win for the Celtics. Jake and Dan look at what went wrong for the Heat and what might be coming this offseason for Pat Riley’s team. Is it time to move Jimmy Butler in a trade?

Speaking of poor results amidst high expectations, the Phoenix Suns look ready to double-down this offseason after getting swept in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs. The guys explain why changing the coach both makes sense and doesn’t, and wonder what type of changes the team could actually make to the roster before the start of next season.

The only Conference Semifinal series that is locked up is between the defending champion Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have seemingly been built specifically to beat the Nuggets. Jake and Dan both have high hopes for how Minnesota can perform in this series, but neither of them pick the Timberwolves to actually win the series because the Nuggets still feel inevitable.

After making a joke about the Philadelphia 76ers home court advantage, or lack thereof, Jake explains why Tyrese Maxey’s game 5 performance didn’t just save Philly’s season…it might’ve changed the future plans of the front office.

  • Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill recaps a fun night for the NBA Playoffs before previewing tonight’s Clippers/Mavericks game.

    00:00 - Introduction

02:00 - 76ers win overtime game vs. Knicks (NY leads 3-2)

22:40 - Cavs look good vs. Magic (CLE leads 3-2)

32:00 - How did the Bucks blow out the Pacers? (IND leads 3-2)

    40:50 - Preview: Mavericks @ Clippers, game 5 (Series tied 2-2)

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill chats with Producer John about just how good the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs have gone so far.

After talking about how entertaining the games have been, even without the usual star power, Vinnie talks about how Tyrese Maxey may have saved the Philadelphia 76ers season with his late-game heroics in an overtime win over the New York Knicks. With a bunch of offseason cap space, could Daryl Morey be building another super team?

In a pivotal game 5, the Cleveland Cavaliers came out on top of the Orlando Magic in a game that showed just how valuable Evan Mobley can be, but also made people wonder if his performance was tied to Jarrett Allen missing the game. This is a tough series against two good teams and it might go to 7 games, with the winner facing the Boston Celtics.

Vinnie has a theory about Doc Rivers and it’s why he thought the Milwaukee Bucks would win game 5 against the Indiana Pacers, which they did handily. But what does it mean for the eventual return of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard? And will the Pacers regret not taking game 5 more seriously?

Finally, Vince and Producer John preview tonight’s pivotal game 5 matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks, with the series currently tied at 2-2. Luka’s shooting has been concerning, but Kyrie has been electric, and we’ll hit to see if James Harden and Paul George can play again like they did in game 4.

  • Dan Devine and Trey Kerby discuss the Lakers and Pelicans, who are going home after losing in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs.

    00:00 - Count me in!

    03:50 - NBA’s youth movement

    10:25 - Nuggets beat the Lakers (4-1)

    18:05 - Lakers offseason preview

    27:10 - Celtics beat the Heat (3-1)

    33:15 - Thunder beat the Pelicans (4-0)

    36:10 - Pelicans offseason preview

    42:45 - Tonight’s NBA games

    45:15 - The Closing Five

    57:45 - Weekly recommendations

On this episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Trey Kerby from the No Dunks podcast to talk about everything that is going on in the NBA Playoffs.

The guys start with a little bit of joy, reveling in the NBA’s youth movement that is in full effect this postseason. With LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant watching the rest of the NBA Playoffs from home, it feels like the face of the league is up for grabs between Nikola Jokic, Anthony Edwards, Luka Doncic and other players still in their 20s.

Dan and Trey talk about Game 5, where Anthony Davis and LeBron James left it all out on the court for the Lakers and it still didn’t matter. Trey explains why the Denver Nuggets are so good in playoff situations despite lacking the same kind of star power as the Lakers.

Right after the buzzer, rumors started flying about if the Lakers would fire head coach Darvin Ham and if LeBron James would be back with the team next season. The guys discuss that, as well as what the Lakers might be looking to do to reshape their roster next year.

The Boston Celtics once again blew out the Miami Heat, but the big stories coming out of the game are the injury to Kristaps Porzingis and the flagrant foul that was called well after the ref’s whistle was blown. As long as Porzingis can be back in time for the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics should be able to weather this storm.

The Oklahoma City Thunder also closed out their series, a sweep or the New Orleans Pelicans, and now get to rest until the winner of Clippers/Mavericks advances to the 2nd round. In addition to talking about rest vs. rust, the guys talk about how deep (and how young) this very good Oklahoma City team is.

The Pelicans desperately needed Zion Williamson in this series and never got him. What they did get was a peek at what life is like with Brandon Ingram as their best player and it could lead to him being off the team by the start of next season.

After briefly discussing the 76ers/Knicks game that will be happening tonight, the guys close the show with The Closing Five and some weekly recommendations.

  • Vincent Goodwill and J.A. Adande talk their way through the most interesting NBA Playoffs action from over the weekend.

    00:00 - Introduction

    01:10 - Stevie Wonder & Steph Curry

    08:25 - Timberwolves sweep Suns

    27:50 - Knicks take 3-1 lead over 76ers

35:50 - Quick NBA Playoffs thoughts

37:30 - Can the Lakers beat the Nuggets?

    48:10 - Clippers tie Mavericks at 2-2

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by J.A. Adande to talk about the most interesting moments and games from a great NBA Playoffs weekend.

First, the guys get a little side-tracked talking about Stevie Wonder, and then start comparing Stevie’s early albums to Steph Curry’s MVP Awards.

Then, the guys get to the very impressive sweep of the Phoenix Suns by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota looks great, although J.A. is a little concerned about how their timelines will match up in the future. Vinnie is excited that a young star (Anthony Edwards) is snatching the crown away from an older star (Kevin Durant), but also wonders if the Golden State Warriors should try to work a trade to acquire Durant.

The New York Knicks fans took over the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Joel Embiid is earning a reputation as a dirty player, and just about everything that can go wrong is going wrong for the 76ers. The Knicks, on the other hand, are nailing the little things and seem as composed as any team in the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in Denver tonight to take on the Nuggets. Both guys agree the Nuggets are going to win the series, but they haven’t looked dominant and J.A. wonders if the injury to Jamal Murray might be just enough for the Lakers to extend the series further.

Without Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Clippers once again looked like a fantastic team, built around the offense of James Harden and Paul George. Both guys are headed towards free agency this offseason, and their win on Sunday raises a lot of interesting questions about how valuable the team finds both players to be.

  • On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine are back together after a couple of weeks with fill-in co-hosts.

    00:00 - Hello friends!

02:00 - Heat beat the Celtics (series tied 1-1)

18:20 - Thunder dominate the Pelicans (Thunder up 2-0)

32:40 - Nuggets at Lakers, Game 3 (Nuggets up 2-0)

41:55 - Cavaliers at Magic, Game 3 (Cavs up 2-0)

    46:45 - Knicks at 76ers, Game 3 (Knicks up 2-0)

54:40 - PLAYER COMPS: Jake Fischer

The guys start off the show with the shocking Miami Heat win over the Boston Celtics last night, a game that Dan says is eerily reminiscent of one of Miami’s games against the New York Knicks in last year’s NBA Playoffs.

After the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the New Orleans Pelicans, Jake says rumors are already starting to fly around the NBA in regard to Brandon Ingram’s future and whether he’s likely to be traded this offseason. He hasn’t played well without Zion Williamson and the two of them haven’t played particularly well together, either.

The Denver Nuggets visit the Los Angeles Lakers tonight, in a series that feels hopeless for LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Jake and Dan dig through the stats, showing off just how good those two guys have been and also how great the Nuggets have been when they’ve matched up against the Lakers.

Jake expected a better playoff performance from the Orlando Magic, who are starting to resemble last year’s Cleveland Cavaliers team (the one that said the playoff lights were too bright for them) while playing against this year’s Cleveland Cavaliers team.

The New York Knicks are traveling to Philadelphia to play the 76ers tonight, which will be something of a homecoming for a bunch of Villanova alumni that the Knicks have built their team around. Jake dug in on what made those Villanova teams great and how all of the players ended up being so close with one another.

Finally, Jake brought some video from his recent league championship game, so Dan watches it and tries to come up with NBA player comps for Jake’s basketball style.
