  • This special episode of Radio Tabbouli brings you into the conversation we had following the publication of our October ‘24 issue, TMR 45 • FROM HERE ONE YEAR ON with Samina Najmi, Ziad Suidan and Lina Mounzer, with special guest Mona Seif. This discussion was about the year of war that began on October 7, 2023, which has since spread into Lebanon and Yemen, with further hostilities expected between Israel and Iran. TMR senior editor Lina Mounzer spoke with contributing writers Samina Najmi and Ziad Suidan about their pieces in the issue and their creative process. Mona Seif discussed the continued imprisonment in Cairo of her brother Alaa Abd El-Fattah despite finishing his five year sentence.

  • On today’s episode on Radio Tabbouli, we invite you to join the conversation of our October ‘23 Book Club meeting on Khaled Khalifa’s novel, No One Prayed Over Their Graves which explores themes of love, death, and societal change in 19th-century Aleppo. The novel, set against the backdrop of Ottoman and French colonial influences, follows two friends whose lives are altered by a flood. Tune in to hear different perspectives on the novel’s symbolism as well as its exploration of societal traumas.

    Malu Halasa - Literary Editor (London)

    A distinguished London-based writer and editor. In her latest role as an editor, she presents "Woman Life Freedom: Voices and Art From the Women’s Protests in Iran" (Saqi 2023), adding another remarkable entry to her extensive body of work.


    Mohammad Rabie - Arabic Editor (Cairo/Berlin)

    Berlin-based writer and editor whose literary contributions extend to four novels in Arabic: "Kawkab Anbar," "Year of the Dragon," "Otared," and "History of the Gods of Egypt." The English translation of "Otared" by Robin Moger earned a nomination for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2016.

    For this third episode of the Radio Tabbouli podcast, TMR takes you to the 2nd Biennial of Performing Arts in the Mediterranean. Here, we meet two women who are committed to an open Mediterranean in which art, discussion and ideas circulate: Giovanna Tanzarella and Simone Bitton.


    On the menu: an interview with Giovanna Tanzarella, researcher and civil society actress, who was invited to speak at a conference on the theme: "Art and Culture in the Mediterranean: Strong Links between Two Shores?" For Giovanna, "art and culture are the blood that circulates in the bodies of countries." In the second part of the episode, we meet filmmaker Simone Bitton, who has been invited to the event for a screening of her 1991 documentary, "Conversation Nord-Sud: a discussion between Serge Daney and Elias Sanbar.” Simone discusses her history as a Moroccan Jew, her commitments, her passion for cinema and the independence of her opinions.

    For this second Radio Tabbouli podcast, TMR takes you to the 45th edition of the CINEMED Festival - Montpellier's International Festival of Mediterranean Cinema. We meet two young directors, Lina Soualem and Cyril Aris, for two documentaries in competition.

    On the menu: an interview with Lina Soualem and her mother, actress Hiam Abbass, for the documentary "Bye Bye Tiberias," following in the footsteps of four generations of Palestinian women. We continue with an interview with director Cyril Aris for his documentary "Dancing on the edge of a Volcano," which takes us to Lebanon in the aftermath of the explosion in the port of Beirut, at the heart of the filming of Costa Brava, Lebanon.

    For this first Radio Tabbouli podcast from TMR, we take you behind the scenes of the Arabesques Festival at Montpellier's Halle Tropisme for two evenings of the current alternative scene. We meet Imed, Khalil, Petra and Hany: 4 eclectic artists. What do they have in common? They draw their inspiration from traditional Arab music, which they revisit with electronic sounds.
