  • Sorry for the missing RTG everyone, I'm taking a couple weeks away from the show for personal reasons. But fortunately, our Patreon archives are full of hundreds of bonus podcasts, so you'll still get your fix. This week, I'm taking my second shot at counting down my 100 favourite games of all-time. I update this list every couple years, and it never gets any easier. Enjoy the episode!
If you enjoy this, we have a TON more waiting for you on Patreon (ad-free, too!). You can also write into the show, join our Discord, help choose the games we cover, and more! Subscriptions start at just $3/month at Patreon.com/RememberTheGame

Every year as part of our Extra-Life stream, we auction off a chance to be my guest on an episode of the show. Last year's winner picked Mass Effect 3, and even though it took us a year to get it done, it's time to talk a great game, from a great series, for a great cause. (Spoilers within!!)
I'd hear an argument that Mass Effect is the greatest trilogy in video game history. Incredible setting, fun gameplay, awesome story, and the decisions you make ACTUALLY matter. And not just for the game you're playing, but for the entire trilogy. Stuff you did in Mass Effect 1 can have a direct impact on how Mass Effect 3 plays out. This one sees Shepard flying around the galaxy uniting everyone to take on the Reapers in a final standoff, and it plays as epic as it sounds.
My guest this week is, as I mentioned, one of the winners of our charity auction from last year, and a long-time hot dog, Ian. We talked for almost an hour and a half about the many highs (and occasional "lows") of not only Mass Effect 3, but the Mass Effect trilogy as a whole.
And before we save the galaxy, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!
This week, someone asks what it would take for Capcom to show Mega Man the love they show their bigger franchises. Should they bring back character specific weapons for Mario Kart 9? And now that I'm a COD guy, will I finally cover one on RTG??
Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of my fav modern RPGs ever: Skyrim, Fallout 3, and KOTOR.

We wrap up October with the winner of our scary game poll - Alien: Isolation. Some say this might be the scariest game ever made, and I agree, but not for the right reasons. I love the Alien franchise, but I HATE this game.

The concept is cool. You play as Ellen Ripley's daughter, and you have to escape a ship full of Aliens, killer robots, and hostile staff. It's a great idea, and the first-person concept works perfectly. But it's also a stealth game, and I fucking HATE stealth games. You spend this whole game hiding in lockers or under desks and after about 6 hours of snoozing and losing, I rage quit as hard as I've ever rage quit a game.

Tyler returns to the show this week, and he may not hate this game QUITE as much as I do, but he's not a fan either. We don't think it's a "lazy" game, but we don't think it's fun. Fucking game...

And before we talk about that stupid Alien, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I think we'll ever get another Mega Man game? Would I recommend the Steam Deck to someone that just lost their Switch? And if I could be a fly on the wall and oversee a game's development, what would I pick?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Alien games: Alien vs Predator, Alien 3, and Alien Trilogy.

I might love the Ghostbusters as much as I love video games. Unfortunately, most Ghostbuster video games suck. So when it was announced that a new game, WITH the original cast, was in the works? Well, I lost my freaking mind.

I think this game is fan service cranked up to 11. You get to join the Ghostbusters, use a proton pack, hang out at the firehouse, and catch ghosts. Janine is there. Walter Peck shows up. You fight Stay Put, for fuck sakes!!!! I don't think the game under the Ghostbuster makeup is as good as it could be, but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter.

When you wanna talk Ghostbusters, who ya gonna call?? My buddy Daniel. We both adore what this game means to the Ghostbusters community, but we also both think it could have been a little better from a gameplay perspective. And how the hell are you not gonna let us drive the Ecto-1?!

And before we get to bustin', I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks which gaming magazine I'd read, renew, and remove? Which video game character would make the best Canadian Prime Minister? And why don't I like Retronauts??

Plus we play a round of 'Watch One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 games based on movies: Spider-Man 2, The Warriors, and Goldeneye 007.

Video game movies may be the talk of Hollywood these days, but back in the 90's and early 2000's, the bar was much lower. Enter 2002's Resident Evil, which by the era's standards really wasn't...bad....?

I struggle with this one because I like the movie enough, but they really went off the beaten Resident Evil path. The mansion and Umbrella are there, but everything else is pretty new. Including the main protagonist, Alice. The new stuff isn't "bad", it's just not what you'd expect. The laser room scene is pretty dope, too.

My guest this week is Remember The Game's resident "evil", my pal Andre. We're both kinda torn on this movie, because like it, but we know it's not really that good. Kinda how I'd describe this podcast, frankly.

And before we get evil, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I'd ever consider doing a'PG' episode of the show? Why do I hate Disney? And what makes a scary video game a GOOD scary video game?

Plus we play a round of 'Watch One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 horror gaming flicks: Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, and Silent Hill.

This has to be one of the most requested episodes in RTG history. And with the Remake dropping this week, I figured it's finally time to talk Silent Hill 2. I get why so many people say this is the best game in the series now. Superb video game.

Over the past few years of Remember The Game?, I've played Silent Hill 3 & 1, but 2 always got stuck in the backlog. I was a little nervous that when I finally got around to playing it, it wouldn't live up to the years of hype from listeners. And while I still think I prefer Resident Evil for my horror fix, Silent Hill 2 is fantastic. Intriguing (albeit confusing) story, great setting, I liked the characters. Honestly, I can't think of too much about this game I don't like. Except maybe James's inability to stop staring at Maria...

My buddy Patrick completes to Silent Hill hat trick on the show this week, and honestly this was one of my favourite episodes of the past few years. We had a great chat about a great game, got into what we interpreted the ending to mean, and pretty well just blew smoke up the ass of Silent Hill for an hour.

And before we start checking doors, I stumble through another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks what I think of the "review bombing" trend online these days. Have I ever played one of the LEGO games? And in an era of micro-transactions, employee layoffs, and incomplete games, why does From Software stand out?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one is all Silent Hill: Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4.

I love Jurassic Park. Phenomenal movie. Outstanding book. I figured the SNES game had to be great too, right? Wrong. I'd rather share a bathroom with Dennis Nedry than play this fucking game...

The concept is solid. It's part top-down shooter, part first-person shooter. Dinosaurs are running wild, the soundtrack is great. It should be fun. But the non-stop deaths, running around aimlessly looking for ID cards, and the tedious/slow first-person segments just shut it down before it gets started.

Poor Tyler is my guess this week, and we were on the same page for this one - Jurassic Park sucks. That dickhead Angry Adam even makes an appearance this week. I tried to stop him, but this game...

And before we talk about this big pile of shit, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks about having too much to play and not being able to choose a game to stick with. Did I ever play gams on my graphing calculator? And what's my focus for my retro game collection these days??

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 SNES games based on 90's movies: The Mask, Batman Forever, and T2.

We need a little time to prep for a month of scary reviews in October, so I wanted to set the tone around RTG Industries. The PlayStation 2 has one of the most stacked libraries in gaming history. So when Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time beat out a bunch of games to win the PS2 Patreon Poll, I was intrigued. And after playing the game, I totally get it. Sands of Time is awesome.

I love these puzzle platforming-esque games, and you can see the DNA of so many gems from today in Sands of Time. The controls can be a little irritating at times, but the action, that dope rewind function, some humorous voice acting and the reasonably tight combat kept me invested for me entire 10-ish hour playthrough.

My buddy Daniel played this one back when it came out. I finished it about 5 hours before we recorded. But 2 decades doesn't change the fact that a good game is a good game. And Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a good fucking game.

And before we play with sand, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I'm getting more concerned about game preservation as online stores on classic consoles start shutting down. Who are my video game crushes? And is "any" publicity for a game actually "good" publicity?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of my favourite PS2 games: God of War, Twisted Metal: Black, and Bully.

X-Men Legends is one of those games I've been wanting to cover on the show for years. I loved it back when it came out, and replaying it twenty years later, I'm happy to say it holds up in the best way. This is a must-play for superhero junkies.

If you've never played it, this was the game that paved the way for the Ultimate Alliance series. You form a team of 4, choosing from over a dozen members of X-Men, and then it becomes a bad-ass dungeon crawler. Every character controls the same but plays different, and when you add in the multiplayer facets, you got yourself a hummmmm dinger.

My buddy Tyler is the Nightcrawler to my Gambit, and we had a chat about why this truly is one of the best super hero games ever made. If you've never played it, I hope we convince you to take the leap. Just don't use Emma Frost. She sucks.

And before we play with legends, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I played any classic PC games as a kid, and I put out a call to action for the hot dogs. Has a video game ever humbled me? (Yes). And do I have any plans to change up the show anytime soon?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 retro X-Men games: The Uncanny X-Men (NES), X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES), and X-Men (Genesis).

  • We have over 650(!) bonus podcasts in our Patreon archives at this point, so I like to toss a freebie on here now and then. Plus we're moving this week, so I haven't had time to play anything. One of my favourite things to do on Expansion Pas are console retrospectives. We look back at the systems we grew up with and share our memories and stories while we examine a console's legacy. And for my money, they don't get any legacier than the legendary NES.

Over 6 years of this podcast, I've discovered some GREAT Genesis games. But this week, we're actually covering of the rare Sega games I played as a kid. The sexy as hell shooter known as Vectorman.

There were a few games on the Sega side of the console wars back in the 90's that genuinely made me jealous as a Super Nintendo kid, and Vectorman was one of them. I absolutely adored the way it looked (still do), and it was a surprisingly competent platformer/shooter as well. You play as a bot made out of orbs, and you spend the game running, gunning, an transforming as you take on other robots made of orbs. And you blow up a lot of TVs, too. It's a fairly difficult game, but one that gets pretty beatable with a little practice. I think it's a must-play game in the Genesis library.

My guest this week was the guy that suffered my wrath on the Ecco the Dolphin episode, my pal Andre. We got into how good Vectorman looks, how decently it plays, he frustratingly tough it can be, and of course, we made a bunch of balls jokes.

And before we talk balls, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I could buy one gaming studio, who would it be? What's on my Mt. Rushmore of video game collection items? And what gaming mechanic has become wayyyy too over played?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Genesis platformers: Quackshot, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Dynamite Headdy.

The Mario & Luigi games are known for their charm, fun combat systems and semi-platforming/puzzle solving. I haven't played a game from this series in well over a decade, but I went back for Partners in Time, and y'know what? It was delightful! (Except for the boss fight at the end. Fuck.)

If you haven't played this one, Mario & Luigi end up going back in time to save Princess Peach, and they run into younger versions of themselves. It not only makes Baby Mario & Luigi less annoying, it actually turns out they're pretty dope in the right situation. Add in Bowser and Baby Bowser teaming up, weird alien mushrooms, and a bean store that I couldn't FUCKING FIND, and you have yourself a pretty good little RPG.

My guest Keegs has played all the Mario & Luigi games, and he quite likes this one (and the series as a whole). I don't know why I took so much time off from these games, but I won't wait another 15 years to play one after finishing Partners in Time. We had a couple minor gripes, but by and large it's a pretty solid game and we had a good time jibba jabbering about it.

And before we go back in time, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks wheat I think the worst named consoles of all time are. How do I hook up all my retro consoles? And what's my stance on the crumb bums ruining online game communities with their underhanded smurfing tactics?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of the highest rated DS games on Metacritic: GTA Chinatown Wars, Pokemon White/Black, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Hundreds and hundreds of you have been asking for us to talk NFL Blitz, and seeing as it won our Patreon Poll, I guess it's time. I'd never played a Blitz before, so I was stoked to fire this up and see what it's all about!

I'll warn you right now. I like football. I watch it, I play Fantasy, I cheer for the Broncos (I know...). But I'm not the most knowledgeable football guy. I only got into the sport as an adult, and I have very little experience with football video games. That said, you could say the same for basketball, and I fucking LOVED NBA Jam. So I was hoping Blitz would hit me in the same way and I'd fall in love again. I'm not sure I'd go that far with Blitz, but friends with benefits is fine by me. This is a good time.

My guest Brad grew up playing the OG NFL Blitz cabinet, and I've spent the past couple weeks screaming at fumbles in NFL Blitz 2000 for the PlayStation. We put our heads together and drew up a play to talk about what makes this game so fun, what irritates us about it, and why it definitely needs to be played with another person.

And before a "random" fumble completely fucks us over, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks if I'd consider reviewing more bad games (intentionally). What's a better option for starting a kid out with retro gaming: Nintendo Switch Online or an NES Classic? And what CDs did we rip onto our Xbox and Xbox 360s back in the day?

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Midway sports franchises: Ready 2 Rumble, NHL Hitz, and MLB Slugfest.

For years, the hot dogs have been asking for a DK64 review. I fought it for as long as I could, but much like Homer revisiting New York City, it's time for me to face my demons and talk about this damned game.

Donkey Kong 64 is the collectathon of all collectathons. You control 5 different Kongs and make your way through a bunch of levels looking for regular bananas, gold bananas, banana birds, coins, blueprints and more stuff I'm probably forgetting. While it's cool that each Kong plays differently and brings something unique to the table, the constant (FUCKING CONSTANT) swapping between them just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that I can't get over. I don't care for this game.

My guest, Bradley McCue, isn't the world's biggest fan either. Frankly, I think he's a little harder on the game than I am. But I think we were tough but fair, showed it some love when it deserved it, and voiced our Donkey Kong 64 frustrations in a calm and reasonable manner for the most part. No Angry Adam.

And before we go looking for a fucking Kong barrel to swap monkeys with, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks me to rank the 5 Zelda games I'd most like to see remade. Have I tried one of the remapped N64 controllers? And can we expect more Metroid Prime reviews before Prime 4 drops??

I can't think of many gaming franchises I love more than Mega Man. And when you think of the Mega-est of Mega Man games, you have to think of Mega Man 2.

While I (slightly) prefer Mega Man 3's harder difficulty and sliding abilities, there's no doubt that Mega Man 2 is the game that made the Blue Bomber a star. 8 robot masters, the most powerful weapon in Mega Man history, an awesome soundtrack, and a more forgiving gameplay loop. As one of our listener's said; "Mega Man 2 is the Mega Man what Terminator 2 is to The Terminator."

I'm rolling solo this week, but if there's a franchise I can talk to myself about without a problem, it's Mega Man. I actually go through my personal strategy to tackle the game this week, and along they way I sprinkle in some listener comments and get into what I like, love, and yes, hate, about MM2.

And before we kick some robot ass, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks me if my confidence behind the mic has improved over the past 6 years. What GameCube games are must owns? And so we actually miss blowing in the cartridge??

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Mega Man titles: Mega Man Zero, Mega Man: Battle Network, and Mega Man Legends.

  • We have over 600 bonus podcasts in our Patreon archives at this point, so I like to toss a freebie on here now and then, and honestly I need this week off to deal with some real-life stuff, so this'll make sure you hot dogs get your weekly fix. We've done a few game draft episodes now (our SNES and NES drafts are available here on the RTG feed) and they always go over well, so I thought I'd toss our Sega Genesis draft up here this week. I join 3 regular RTG guests, and we each draft 10 Genesis games to try to build the best library possible!
If you enjoy this, we have a TON more waiting for you on Patreon (ad-free, too!). You can also write into the show, join our Discord, help choose the games we cover, and more! Subscriptions start at just $3/month at Patreon.com/RememberTheGame

The more I play Metroid, and the more I play the GBA, the more I like them. So Metroid ON the GBA? Perfection And that's a word I might use to describe this week's game - Metroid: Zero Mission.

People have been screaming at me to play this one ever since we reviewed the original NES Metroid a couple years ago, and I finally see why. This is a full-blown remake of Samus' first game. Everything frustrating about the original version is gone, and everything new is awesome. I'm a fan of all the Metroid games I've played so far, but this stacks up against the best of the best.

My guest this week is our resident Metroid master, my buddy Daniel. We went over everything the fixed, everything they added, and everything that makes Zero Mission great this week. Minor spoilers for one segment are coming, but you should have already played this damned game anyway!

And before we go bounty hunting, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks me what my 3 gaming wishes would be. Will I ever review a card game on the show? And what do I know of Red Dead 2??

Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 GBA games based on Nintendo IPs: Wario Land 4, Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and Kirby and the Amazing Mirror.

I've slowly been checking out all the movies from the 80's and 90's that I missed growing up, and this week we're talking about quite possibly the worst AND the best of the bunch in Street Fighter: The Movie.

From the horrendous acting (aside from Raul Julia as M. Bison), to the stupid character backstories, I love EVERYTHING about this movie. A classic "it's so bad it's good" flick, and honestly one of my favourite "old" movies I've watched since I started down this cinematic road.

My guest this week is our resident fighting game junkie, Mike The Ref. I asked him to explain to a noob like me if any of this is actually canon to the Street Fighter universe, and we had a great time laughing the good (Bison), the bad (Guile), and the ugly (Ken) that was Street Fighter: The Movie.

And before we fight in the streets, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro!

This week, someone asks me what the last game on the planet is that I would review on this show. Would I ever consider reviewing games that were never ported to America? And what do I like about being Canadian?

Plus we play a rare round of 'WATCH One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 crappy gaming movies: Tekken, Double Dragon, and Mortal Kombat.
