  • EPISODE 023: In the bleakest moments of winter, people turn to the beloved classic movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" not just for its heartwarming Christmas cheer, but as a lifeline against depression. The film's portrayal of George Bailey's despair resonates deeply with those struggling with similar feelings, offering a relatable protagonist and glimmer of hope.

In the story, George Bailey's young daughter, Zuzu, with her innocent perspective and boundless love, plays a crucial role in reawakening George's joy of being alive. Her simple acts like gifting him the petals from her flower and reminding him about the angel getting its wings when a bell rings, serve as a powerful symbol of hope, and the importance of life's simple joys.

In this episode, I'm joined by Karolyn Grimes, the talented actress known for portraying Zuzu Bailey. She's here to discuss her experiences and journey as a child actress while shedding light on the cherished character she brought to life.

Also joining me, is psychotherapist Dr. Chris Brunelle, who'll be offering his perspective on this film's impact on mental health.

I'm Dr. Jen Palladino, a Chiropractor who specializes in the treatment of musician and performing artist injury. Music and the creative arts can change the world and I'm interested in exploring the passion that music and art evokes in people, whether it's playing or listening, or creating or observing. It's that powerful driving force within the human soul that sparks emotion, unites the masses, bridges language barriers, and heals the body, mind, and spirit.

I invite you to join me and discover the impactful message of self-worth and the significance of community within "It's a Wonderful Life", especially relevant during this holiday season--a period often defined by heightened pressure and loneliness. This timeless classic serves as a reminder that we are not alone, that our lives hold significance, and even if in the darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.

  • EPISODE 019: Hey there! It’s Dr. Jen, host of Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles. I thought I’d do something a little different for this episode. A little while back, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Jason Scheurs, the host of the podcast, Scream Therapy. Scream Therapy explores how Punk Rock music can affect mental health in a positive way.

So, why was I a guest on Scream Therapy, you ask? Well, little does my Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles audience know but back in the day, that’s the mid to late 70’s to be precise, I was lucky enough to experience Punk Rock in its early inception. In other words, I was a bit of a “Sheena”, as in Punk Rocker, for those Ramones fans out there.

So, I thought by sharing this Scream Therapy episode, I would give my listening audience a better understanding of my background. And why I believe whole heartedly that music, all kinds of music, is the ultimate of healers.

And if you’re a returning listener or new to tuning in to Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles:

I’m Dr. Jen Palladino, a Chiropractor who specializes in the treatment of musician and performing artist injury. Music and the creative arts can change the world. And I’m interested in exploring the passion that music and art evokes in people. Whether it’s playing or listening, or creating or observing. It’s that powerful driving force within the human soul that sparks emotion, unites the masses, bridges language and cultural barriers, and heals the body, mind, and spirit.

So, keep listening especially if you’re into Old School Punk Rock. You know, like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Generation X, The Dead Boys, Television, Patti Smith. Old School. On both the New York and the London scenes. That’s right. Because I’m here to tell you all about it…

Scream Therapy is a podcast about using punk rock as a catalyst for mental health. Host Jason Schreurs welcomes members of the punk music scene who, like him, have lived experience with mental health challenges.

You know, a job that you love so much, that when you open your eyes first thing in the morning, you can’t wait to start working? And even better yet, that “job you love” would involve your passion for say, music?

  • EPISODE 017: Most everyone, myself included has a favorite band, musician, composer, or performer, whose music we just love. And whatever it is that intrigues us about this music will be life-changing for us in some way, shape or form. And because we identify and therefore, become emotionally attached to the music, we couldn't help but to extend our love and appreciation to that person or persons who's written played and performed these masterful compositions.

So then what constitutes a SUPERFAN? Firstly, let's define the word fan, which of course is short for the word fanatic which would be an enthusiastic devotee of say, a sport or a performing art, though, usually as a spectator. Another way to define the term fan is an ardent admirer or enthusiast of say a celebrity or a musician.

I'm sure most of us have seen fans in action at concerts during a performance, whether they're holding up signs or wearing t-shirts with the band's logo blazoned across their chest. Or even hanging around the backstage door area. Or maybe, we ourselves have done that in praise of our own favorites. Nevertheless, the devotion is real and taken extremely seriously.

My focus is to celebrate true fandom about those who whole heartedly and genuinely loved the music and its creator in a normal, stable and sound minded way.

So, I'll be introducing three super fans who were nice enough to talk to me about their super fandom.

Our first SUPERFAN is Keith whose love for the American multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, sound engineer, and record producer Todd Rundgren ranks Keith as a number one Todd Rundgren SUPERFAN.

Our next SUPERFAN is Jeff, who is a Bruce Springsteen-- the BOSS SUPERFAN.

And finally, Mia who loves her Harry Styles. Mia calls herself the ex-One Direction members devoted SUPERFAN.

Join Dr. Jen as she talks with these three SUPERFANS about their love for the music, the performer, and what it’s like being a devoted fan.

  • EPISODE 016: Hi, this is Dr. Jen! You know, there’s nothing that I like more than interviewing my guests for these episodes of Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles which, I’m so thrilled that you’ve enjoy!

Interviewing my guests and learning and sharing their stories, viewpoints, and imparted knowledge and advice has been a wonderful experience for me. But, for today’s episode, I thought I’d turn the table and do something a little different.

Christof Zurn, the Host of the podcast, The Power of Music Thinking was kind enough to ask me to be a guest on his show. So, I thought that the Rock ‘N Healthy Lifestyles audience would enjoy listening to The Power of Music Thinking episode that I was a guest on. This way, you can learn a little something more about me, your host!

Christof Zurn of The Power of Music Thinking episode show notes for A Sound Life with Dr. Jen Palladino:

“From the wild Punk scene in New York and London of the 70’s to a sound healing practice in Los Angeles, my guest today is Jennifer Palladino, also called Dr Jen, a Doctor of Chiropractic, the Regional Director of the You Rock Foundation and a holistic health facilitator connecting mind, body, and spirit with Chiropractic Sound Therapy.

Her musical experiences span from being a young performer wrangler at the American Ballet Theatre while Mikhail Baryshnikov was Artistic Director, to w2orking in the music industry and a mastering studio in New York to the legendary Marquee Club in London, where she made friends with members of the Punk and New Wave scene.

We talk about a rich life in music from the impact of the Beatles, the power of Punk, and an orchestra of instruments that she uses in her sound healing practice.

Jennifer shares with us some music hacks, like how different frequencies resonate with our body, which contains 75% water, and how she uses tuning forks with slightly different frequencies to produce binaural sounds in a sound bathing session.

And she explains the full moon performances she is doing as “The Sound Healers” on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Rudolfo Valentino and Judy Garland rest.”

  • EPISODE 015: Paul Petersen began his show-business career at the age of 9 as a Mouseketeer on the Mickey Mouse Club. He appeared in the 1958 movie Houseboat with Sophia Loren and Cary Grant, but achieved stardom playing teenager Jeff Stone from 1958 to 1966 on the ABC family television sitcom, The Donna Reed Show. With the fame he achieved on The Donna Reed Show, Petersen received recording offers and had several hit record singles. In 1962, the sentimental teen pop song "My Dad" was performed on The Donna Reed Show with Petersen singing the tune to his on-screen father, actor Carl Betz. Released as a single in the same year, it reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Throughout eight seasons and decades of reruns in syndication, The Donna Reed Show became part of American popular culture. After the show had ended, Paul went on to appear in numerous movies and TV shows well into the 1990’s. After his years as a child actor, Petersen obtained a degree in literature and went on to write 16 adventure novels. In 1977, Petersen's autobiography entitled Walt, Mickey and Me: Confessions of the First Ex-Mouseketeer was published. He has served as a board member of the Donna Reed Foundation and works for the Donna Reed Festival, which takes place annually on the third week of June in Reed's hometown of Denison, Iowa. He has also served on the board of directors of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), a national media performers AFL-CIO union based in Los Angeles. In 1997, Petersen was honored by the Young Artist Foundation with its Former Child Star "Lifetime Achievement" Award for his role on the series, The Donna Reed Show. In 1990, following the suicide of former child star Rusty Hamer, Petersen established the organization, A Minor Consideration, which supports child stars and other child laborers through legislation, family education, and personal intervention and counseling for those in crisis.

Before you knew it, you couldn’t turn around without seeing Wendy and the Snapple logo on buses and buildings, on billboards, radio, and TV. In fact, you couldn’t even take a sip of Snapple without hearing Wendy’s voice in your head saying, “Made from the best stuff on Earth”! • EPISODE 012: Guest Dave Brandwein, the cofounder, principal lyricist, lead guitarist and vocalist for the 9-piece funk band, Turkuaz, is now a solo artist playing under the moniker, Band For Sale. In his journey, he has endured some pretty extreme and unforeseen circumstances in these past few years, which has changed his life in many ways. After years of being hyper-focused in his role as Turkuaz’s main man, Brandwein was blindsided by the sudden mass exodus of the band members who announced their departure on social media with Dave being one of the last to know. Having personal problems of his own, like addiction and sobriety, divorce, and being faced with the pandemic, didn’t help his situation but was ultimately what he needed to pivot and find a new direction in his life and his music.

  • EPISODE 011: American Rock and Roll Groupie, Author, Musician, and Actress, Pamela Des Barres, talks about feminism, the word “Groupie”, and her experiences on the rock music scene on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood back in the 1960’s and 70’s. She famously went on to form friendships with many of the great musical artists of that era, and became romantically linked with various notable artists such as Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon. Frank Zappa was the driving force behind her work as a member of the all-girl music and performance art group, Girls Together Outrageously, or the GTOs, and from there, Pamela pursued her career as an actress appearing in movies and commercials. Des Barres wrote two memoirs about her experience as a groupie, I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie (1987) and Take Another Little Piece of My Heart: A Groupie Grows Up (1993). It is widely believed that Cameron Crowe drew from these memoirs to create the groupie character Penny Lane for his film Almost Famous. Today, Pamela Des Barres continues to author books, contribute to others' works as an editor and consultant, and pen articles for online and print publications. In addition to her work as a writer, Des Barres also teaches creative writing classes in Los Angeles, as well as in several other cities throughout the U.S. and internationally. She affectionately refers to her writing class members as her "dolls". She's also a rock and roll tour guide, giving intimate guided tours through the 1960s Hollywood area where she revisits the sites noted in her memoir, 'I'm with the Band'. And my guest is also the podcast host of Pamela Des Barres Pajama Party!
