Have you ever used Google Maps and been redirected midway via a better route? Think about this show as your personalized navigation tool for fertility and IVF, as Dr. Aimee shares the five things you need to know before, during, and after IVF to support yourself.
1. Be clear on why you’re considering IVF. Why are you doing IVF?
2. Realize your relationships may change. This is something I ask my patients to think about before, during, and after IVF.
3. Develop a plan for unused embryos. When you’re going through IVF this is likely the last thing you want to think or talk about.
4. Know that pregnancy isn’t always easy. Developing a support system is important during IVF and fertility treatment.
5. Understand that your feelings may linger. The feelings you had when you had a hard time getting pregnant can sometimes continue during pregnancy, after pregnancy, and beyond.

Today on The Egg Whisperer podcast, my dear friend Dr. Jenna McCarthy is joining me to talk all about the most common IVF mistakes. Our intent is to share as much information as we can with you so you’ll go into an IVF cycle aware, empowered and feeling comfortable with what is going on. We want people to avoid these mistakes and also hear that they're common, they happen, and there’s always something you can do if you’re dealing with an issue.⠀
We’re talking about troubleshooting needle and syringe issues, the importance of not eating or drinking before your egg retrieval, timing of the trigger shot, sperm emergencies, and medication dosage issues and more. We’re basically talking about everything we’ve seen in our combined 20+ years of doing IVF. ⠀

I’m so excited that Dr. Kevin Osteen is joining me this week for the Egg Whisperer Show. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College. Since the 1990s, Dr. Osteen’s research program has focused on environmental endocrine disruptors and how they impact endometriosis. His laboratory developed “organ-on-a-chip” technology, which is a tiny plastic “chip” about the size of a USB thumb drive that mimics the workings of the microenvironment of a human organ. Dr. Osteen’s team created the first endometrium and endometriosis chip models. These “organ-on-a-chip” models provide a way to test and observe what happens in “normal” endometrium, and in those that have endometriosis. This technology changes the way doctors study this disease. Dr. Osteen and I are talking about the organ-on-a-chip technology, endometriosis, and endocrine disruptors, and reproductive health. I’m excited to have him on the show, and hope you’ll join us for this exciting and very timely conversation.

Your Genetics are a key part of my TUSHY Method (Y = Your genetics) and I'm so honored to have Dena Goldberg (also known far and wide as Dena DNA) joining me today!
Some of the questions I know you have on your mind about genetics are:
Nothing came back on my 23 & Me test. I'm good to go, right?
Answer: Not so fast. 23&Me relies on "SNP testing," and only looks at "very specific bookmarks on very random genes." You'll want a more thorough test for preconception screening.
I don't have any history of disease in my family. Do I need to do genetic testing?
Answer: It's a good idea. There are syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome that are asymptomatic in 90% of people who are carriers. You'll want to know if you have those genetic markers before passing them on to your embryo and child.
Can you make sure my embryo doesn't have autism?
Answer: Autism is actually a description of a constellation of symptoms. So it's not an underlying condition in and of itself. There are hundreds to thousands of genetic causes to autism. We can catch some of these cases, but not all. Autism is multifactorial, meaning that many of these cases are probably caused by a combination of genetics and environment or in other words, nature and nurture together.
Thank you for joining me, Dena!

Today on the Egg Whisperer Show, I’m answering one of the most common questions I get from all of you: How can I improve embryo quality? And, I also very often get the questions of how could I improve egg and sperm quality too? I’m really excited to talk about this with you today!!
The thing is this, there are three factors that influence egg, sperm and embryo quality that I want you to know about. Once you know about it, then you can do something about how these three things come into play in your life. And the three factors that I want you to know about are age, genetics, and environment.

The relationship between sleep and fertility isn't something that's talked about very much. I'm excited to have sleep expert, Dr. Sara Nowakowski, joining me today.
We all know sleep is important, but did you know that sleep helps you recover from illness and rebound from life challenges? It also helps with mood regulation and decreases depression and anxiety, and it has been shown to help memory consolidation.
Plus, there is scientific evidence to show that sleep impacts hormones, has varying effects during the different phases of a woman's reproductive life (when trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and during perimenopause and menopause). Sara is sharing some of the findings about this, along with some tips on improving sleeping habits.
Sara Nowakowski, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and treats patients with insomnia and other sleep disorders at the Baylor Sleep Medicine Clinic. She is also a Research Health Scientist at the Houston VA, where she conducts research on sleep and women’s health.

This episode is all about how to care for yourself, and includes loving tips on how family and friends can support someone in fertility treatment, too.
Self-care is anything but selfish. It can come in the form of setting healthy boundaries in relationships, having clear communication or simply giving ourselves a break. As a fertility patient when we prioritize these things it helps us bring forward our best selves for every situation and makes the journey more supportive.
In this Egg Whisperer show, I share suggestions for patients and friends and family members of patients to help their fertility journey be one where they feel supported and loved.
My hope is that you’re able to apply this, no matter your situation, and find your fertility journey is better as a result.

Is your pregnancy test negative, again?
Let’s get real. It sucks when we do everything we can in our power to make something happen, and it just doesn’t.
If you’ve ever wanted to get pregnant, and have seen a negative result on the test, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
It doesn’t matter if it’s one month of trying or 2 years….
“Trying to get pregnant” can be painful, and the phrase itself is defeatist. The mindset it establishes is one based on fear vs. love. I like to lead from a place of love, and encourage my patients to think positively.
For that reason, I advocate for replacing it with, “preparing for pregnancy.”
Doesn’t it just sound more peaceful, and open to the process? I think so.
Regardless if you are on board with my line of thinking, I do want to share some helpful tips and suggestions so that your path to pregnancy is as informed and efficient as possible.
Here are my top tips:
My #1 tip for preparing for pregnancy is to NOT put blind faith in fertility apps.
Tip #2: Develop a resilient, and positive mindset.
Tip #3: Make use of science (diagnostic testing) to understand what could be preventing you from getting pregnant. Oh, and ask questions. Lots of them!
Tip #4: Talk to your doctor about things you can do that are in your control like lifestyle and diet.

Today on The Egg Whisperer Show, I'm really excited to be joined by Dr. Ellen Vora. I feel we are very much alike. She's passionate about easing the real suffering that people experience from anxiety and mental health issues. I can't wait to have her come on and share some new insights about anxiety (it turns out it's not just a "neck up" problem), the difference between "false" anxiety and true anxiety, and how to handle the anxiety that often comes up as a fertility patient. We'll also be talking more about her book, which came out this year, titled "The Anatomy of Anxiety."
Dr. Ellen Vora is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.

I’m so excited to share my latest episode of The Egg Whisperer Show with you! This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa Schuman, a leading therapist, award-winning researcher, and author who specializes in family building, donor conception, and surrogacy.
Lisa and I dive deep into the critical role mental health plays in fertility treatments, especially when third-party reproduction, like egg or sperm donation and gestational carriers, is involved. She shares her personal journey and decades of professional expertise, introducing us to The Center for Family Building and its new expert-guided community platform.
In this episode, we cover:
What inspired Lisa to specialize in family building and fertility counseling. The mission behind The Center for Family Building and its resources for patients. Why mental health support is essential for individuals and couples navigating fertility treatments, surrogacy, or adoption. Unique ways Lisa supports diverse family structures, including LGBTQIA+ and single-parent families. Amanda Troxler has been practicing family formation law since 2013. She represents hundreds of Intended Parents, Donors, and Surrogates a year. Additionally, Amanda has personal experience in third party assisted reproduction, having been an egg donor.
In today’s show we are going to explain what family formation law is. As a fertility patient, it’s important that you understand some of the basic legal pieces that you might want to have in place for your journey, whether that be for IVF, or if you’re going to be using donor eggs, donor sperm, or using a gestational carrier. I very much love Amanda’s thoughtful and caring approach to making family formation law approachable. As she says, “healthy families are formed through honest communication and centering the needs of the future child."
Amanda received her J.D. from UCLA law on a Dean’s Merit Scholarship in 2012. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in 2008. Amanda is a member of the Academy of California Adoption-ART Lawyers (“ACAL”), Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy (“SEEDS”), and American Society of Reproductive Medicine (“ASRM”).

Regardless of who you see for fertility care, you deserve the best—personalized treatment. I realize that not everyone can come to see me, and I won’t be around forever.
This information is a valuable resource as you begin your fertility journey, whoever it is with and whenever it takes place.
The inspiration behind this topic? Well—it started with some snooping. Several times each day, I hear my receptionist answer the phone and new patients on the other end asking what they can expect at a new patient consult. The mystery is about to be revealed!

Whether you’re local to me (San Francisco) or halfway around the world, it doesn’t matter. I’m sharing science-based information with you today so that you don’t have to turn to Google, tarot cards, or your co-worker when it comes to fertility advice.
Your situation is unique. I want you to keep that in mind. What you need may be different than someone else. What you need is based on you.
In a sense, your path to fertility treatment should be as customized as your coffee order.
So this is what I do with my patients. I start by getting to know them, and their fertility health.
Have you been starting with you?
What I mean is, do you know what your diagnosis is? Is there a clear and compelling answer for why you may not be getting pregnant? I don’t believe in “unexplained infertility”. There is an answer and my job is to help you find it.
In this episode, you'll learn all about how to pick the best fertility treatment plan for you.
