In Episode 10 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to the legendary Donald Tardy of Obituary!
Like some of my other guests Donald truly needs no introduction! As the power house drummer behind one of the greatest and most legendary death metal bands of all time, he has more than proved himself as one of the greats of the genre.
Donald has a truly unique and distinctive style. Filled with groove and power combined with incredible musicality and true understanding of what is "needed" for the song, his amazing playing style adds so much to the Obituary sound and without him it just wouldn't sound like Obituary!
In this episode we talk about how he approaches practicing his drums, how he writes his drum parts, his long standing relationship with his band mates and what he has seen change in the music industry over the years. We talk about his love of cats and also his time playing with Andrew W.K !
All in all another incredible chat with an absolute legend! As always I hope you enjoy listening to it!

In Episode 9 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to James Stewart, drummer of Decapitated, Vader, Sermon, Divine Chaos + many more ...
James is a truly incredible extreme metal drummer. Combining intense speed and stamina with groove and creativity, all to seemingly effortless effect.
James made his name when he joined polish extreme metal legends Vader. Since then he has become a very recognisable name and face in the extreme metal world, which has lead to his recent recruitment by Polands other legendary extreme metal band Decapitated. With a packed session schedule on top of his commitments with Vader and Decapitated, James is truly a "working musician" in all senses of the word.
In this episode we talk about James' poignant experiences in Vader and how just "saying yes" can be a blessing and a curse. We discuss being the only Englishman in European bands. We talk about practice, writing and the highs and lows of touring. Its a great, candid chat and I really hope you enjoy.

In Episode 8 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Dirk Verbeuren, drummer of Megadeth, Cadaver, Brave The Cold, Bent Sea, Scarve, Tronos + many more ...
Dirk truly needs no introduction, starting as the drummer for French technical metallers Scarve and now serving as the drummer for the legendary Megadeth, he has proven that his drumming chops are incredibly proficient and versatile.
Aside from Megadeth, Dirk plays in many other projects including Cadaver, Brave The Cold, Tronos, Bent Sea (his own band) and many more. He has also previously played for Soilwork, The Devin Townsend Project, Aborted, Satyricon and again ... many more.
Dirk is a truly incredible drummer, blending speed, power, creativity and groove seamlessly to form a very unique and inspiring playing style. He is one of my favourite drummers and definitely a gigantic influence on me and my playing, so it was a pleasure to have this chat with him and see how his mind works.
In this episode we talk about Dirk's approach to writing parts and learning parts, how he approaches life on and off stage and his undying love for blastbeats. It's an incredible chat with lots of insightful tips from a drummer who has truly shown many times over to be at the top of his game. I truly hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

In Episode 7 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Marthyn Jovanovic creator of the well known educational courses Bass Drum Mastery and Single Stroke Mastery and more recently his online drum school The Drum Technique Academy.
Marthyn is a unique force in the extreme metal drumming world, at one point he was a very busy live and studio drummer, touring and recording with the band Belphegor along with other projects. Later on, his love for teaching took over and he moved away from touring to focus on education. Since then he has become the main voice for drum education in the metal and extreme metal drumming world. His knowledge and passion for teaching is palpable and his down to earth, welcoming teaching style are what sets him apart from the rest.
In this episode we talk about Marthyn's multiple businesses, his passion for teaching, what he misses about touring and what keeps him inspired. We also talk about the common problems and questions he faces from students and how he maintains such a large student community. This is a super insightful and interesting talk with a lot of advice and tips from a super knowledgable teacher about all things drumming and life. I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it.

In Episode 6 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I answer your listener questions.
After my guest this week needed to reschedule I decided to do a Q and A episode and answer as many of your questions as possible. I initially set myself a time limit of an hour, but as I like to ramble and there were so many questions, it ended up being longer ... and I still didn't answer all the questions haha so I will do another Q and A in the future.
There were some really cool questions ranging from my influences and how I started drumming to specific questions about building speed and technique to how Brexit and covid may affect the music industry and everything in between. I hope you all enjoy this and get something from it and thank you so much to absolutely everybody who sent questions in. I'm sorry if I didn't get your question answered, i'll do another one again soon.
You're all legends for listening and keeping this podcast going.
Cheers

In Episode 5 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Dan Presland of Ne Obliviscaris, Vipassi and A Million Dead Birds Laughing.
Dan is a super creative, power house extreme metal drummer. He has a really unique style and combines crazy stamina and endurance with multi pedal ostinatos and polyrhythms all mixed with the speeds you'd expect from extreme metal! Super impressive.
In this episode we talk about Dan's new business and passion project Bushido Studios, a purpose build drum recording studio in his home in Melbourne, Australia. We also talk a lot about writing and creating, maintaining drumming chops and the perils and struggles of being an extreme metal drummer in general. It's a great fun chat with a lot of laughing. In Episode 4 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Adrian Erlandsson of At The Gates, The Haunted, The Lurking Fear, Nemhain (Ex - Cradle Of Filth, Ex - Paradise Lost, Ex - Brujeria)
Adrian needs no introduction. A legend in many senses of the word. I have been a huge fan of his since I started drumming and getting into metal as a teenager. His drumming has shaped so many legendary recordings and has influenced countless drummers through the decades with his musical, groove laden, hard hitting style.
On top of being a legend and an incredible drummer he is a truly lovely dude. I've had the pleasure of meeting him a bunch of times but we have never really had the chance to geek out, so I thought this podcast was a great excuse to do that. In this episode we talk about a whole bunch of things. Stories from the old days, music tastes, practice, the state of the music industry now vs then and much more. Its a long but super interesting chat and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording it.

In Episode 3 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Alan Cassidy of The Black Dahlia Murder.
Me and Alan met back in 2014 when we toured together in the U.S. and became drum buddies pretty quick. Watching him every night was a real pleasure. Considering how chilled out Alan is as a person his drumming is frantic, powerful, super creative and insanely tight. In the episode we have a great chat about all things writing and recording, practice, the benefits of electronic drums and midi, drummers we like and we nerd out about gear. Alan is a super chilled, very funny dude and it was a real pleasure to chat with him.

In Episode 2 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to amazing dude, incredible drummer and old friend Krimh of Septicflesh (previously Decapitated and also a solo artist).
Krimh is an incredibly well known name in the metal drumming world and drumming world in general. If you know his drumming you will know why. We have known each other for a long time and usually run into each other on tour ... for obvious reasons we haven't done that in a while, so this was a great chance to catch up. We talk about the current situation, discipline, practice and the importance of rest. We also touch on the importance of YouTube and social media for modern drummers. Overall an awesome talk with a great dude.
