Moving to a country as far from the memories of his past as a plane could take him, David 'Dickie' Groenteman made a fresh start with his family on Australian shores.

It's here that Dickie harnessed his passion for his beloved ice hockey to literally build a sporting legacy across the nation and abroad with his own hands.

Now as the 99-year-old faces his final battle against a slow and silent killer, he imparts powerful wisdom that we could all learn a lot from.

Faith that freedom would come is what kept David 'Dickie' Groenteman's spirit strong through the torturous years he spent locked inside the death camps. But once he was free, the journey didn't end there. Dickie didn't know if any of his loved ones were still alive and so he set out on a search mission across Europe by plane, train, bicycle and boat fuelled by the hope he may find family members who survived the war.

Very few eye witnesses to the atrocities of the death camps are still alive today. Some of the tales David 'Dickie' Groenteman shares about his 3 years as a prisoner at Auschwitz, Mauthausen and the other camps are harrowing but there are also moments of hope. Dickie wants you to hear what he endured, so that humanity may learn from its evil past.

Dickie Groenteman’s childhood was one of blissful innocence. Dickie’s father Elias was a successful businessman, his mother Rosetta a skilled dressmaker and his big sister Betty showered him with love. It was a beautiful life for the Groentemans and for Dickie looked like it would only get better.

An ice hockey prodigy, the future was bright - and then came the invasion.
