Angela Heap shares with us how preconception health is crucial in getting things right for the best start to life and long-term good health for our children and the generations to follow.
Angela also discusses her philosophy on fertility, which is not about point and fire. It’s about you preparing for that child because life is a marathon not fast race. She recommends that couples prepare for 70 days at a minimum because that is how long it takes for new sperm to develop and likewise for women to improve the health of the egg(s) that will be released.
Angela also discusses fertility while a woman is considered to be at an advanced maternal age. She says that at any age, for men and women, you can be as healthy as you possibly can through decreasing toxin exposure, managing stress levels, and eating quality nutrition. If these things are done, there is no reason why you can’t have a healthy baby.
Angela also dives in to share how couples can maintain intimacy while they are trying to have a baby because intimacy can easily become work and therefore diminish the pleasure. Now is a good time to learn how to maintain intimacy in the relationship because it will continue to get more difficult after having a baby.

In this week's episode, Dr. Jeffery Craig, an internationally recognized expert on twins, shares with us some insight as to what makes twins so different and how these answers can lead us towards a healthier future and individualized medicine. With twin studies, he and his colleagues have been able to really look at the early life factors that could influence epigenetic states and influence health. These discoveries can help predict disease and target preventions or interventions to limit the burden of these diseases.
One of my favorite insights that took place during this interview was when Dr. Craig said that twins are already different before they are even born. He explains that these differences can be random that accumulate or influenced by the environment and that the differences seen in twins are telling us that there is a mystery in life and he thinks that it has helped our evolution and has helped us evolve and adapt.

Dr. Michael Ross explains the significance of epigenetics during fetal development and how it relates to obesity and metabolic syndrome later in life. He shares with us how epigenetics is a process that is meant to assist in survival, but problems may arise when there is a mix match between the predicted environment of the world a baby will be born into and the environment in which they are actually born into. He also shares with us how signaling within the brain is also responsible for weight gain and how this is established before birth. Dr. Ross also shares with us why planning a pregnancy is so important and how care providers are a part of something much larger than they realize when they are caring for women before and during pregnancy.

Micki deep dives into the Huffington post article she wrote, 12 Surprising Reasons You Are Stuck in a Health Rut, while also sharing with us how to climb out of the health rut and tools you can use to be healthy long term. When I read her article, I agreed that these 12 reasons were surprising and more than one of them can be affecting any one of us at a single time. There were a few that stood out to me the most, so I asked her to talk about them a bit more. There is a chance that you have possibly heard one or a few of them but I promise you will not be familiar with all of them. Being aware and identifying which reason(s) has you trapped in a rut is the first step but knowing how to climb out and stay out is a whole other journey to travel. So many more women are being diagnosed with autoimmune diseases, and that increases the fear and worry around pregnancy and having a healthy baby. In this episode, I share with you one of my biggest Ah-Ha moments that came to me while I was in the middle of freaking out with panic and fear. In the midst of me clenching on for dear life my husband said something that snapped me out of my own head and within seconds brought clarity and a deeper connection to the moms I speak to about pregnancy and having a new baby. As I work through my fears I have come to realize how hard it is for me to let go and trust the process. Even when there is a large base of certainty I don’t like feeling like I have no absolute control and that small amount of uncertainty weighs on me pretty heavily. I get that consciously this way of thinking makes no sense but the more I am out of my element the better I see things. This is how many expecting and new moms feel as they are growing and caring for their baby. I reached a whole new level of understanding which I know will only get deeper with time and various experiences. I didn’t like being so uncomfortable and scared but I appreciated that I was able to connect with others because of it.

In this episode, I share a few insights of one of my favorite author’s Annie Murphy Paul TED Talk, What we learn before we’re born. If you listen to it a couple of times I know you will pull different pieces of information from it. This talk was presented a year after the Time Magazine article I read during my personal discovery of the field Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, and less than a year after this article I read her book Origins, How the nine months before birth shape the rest of our lives. Her article and book were my catalysts to finding my life’s purpose. I will forever be thankful for Annie’s work to introduce this field to those outside of the research world and of course to myself.

In this episode, our guest Legacy Leader Dr. Susan P. Bagby explains how development before birth predisposes disease risk and why healthy nutrition across the lifespan is critical. She discusses how a baby’s development in the womb may predispose them to be at risk for hypertension, diabetes, metabolic disease, kidney disease, and obesity before they are even born including the life situations that may increase the risk after birth. She puts a whole new spin on how you will think about a healthy pregnancy, supporting the fetal development and what individualized health means. Dr. Bagby and her team are doing a lot of work within the communities of Oregon to get healthy nutritional experiences within schools from kindergarten through college. She explains the importance of placing value on good nutrition back into our communities and into our westernized culture.

Dr. Romie was the very first person I interviewed for my podcast. I was so nervous and couldn't believe she said yes when I asked her. I was so nervous to speak with her but she was just as compassionate, caring, and welcoming as when I met her in person about a year prior to this recording. Since that very day, I have made it a practice to do the quick grounding meditation before I get online to start my interview with anyone. It really comes in handy to calm my nerves and allow me to be present with those I have the honor to speak with for this podcast. I will forever me thankful to having her as my very first interview because she set the bar and the stage for how I approach each interview and the intention that is set before I begin.
