"It's like Santa's shaking you."
In this special preview episode to Season 2, we chat all things mince pie!
Ever wondered what one is? Who makes the best? How to make better ones at home?
Host Jennifer Earle - a food innovation consultant and London food tour guide - sits down with the Pie King, Chef Calum Franklin, author of The Pie Room, and award-winning food writer and mince pie reviewer, Felicity Cloake. They try 12 of 2022's mince pies from a selection of London's best bakeries and grocers.
All the links and details are at www.bit.ly/mincepies2022
Some of the mince pies are available anywhere in the UK and the link above includes a list of others that are probably worth checking out.
What's coming next:
The rest of Season 2 will be recorded and released in 2023. Expect chats about croissants, Jewish bakes, Middle Eastern treats, bread, biscuits and more, with Jen and a series of talented and knowledgeable guests.

Did you know in 2018 UK households threw away the equivalent of 1 million loaves of bread A DAY?
And - after briefly going down in April 2020 - that number may even be worse now.
This week I sit down with Chloe Stewart who is so concerned about how much edible food is wasted that seven years ago she set out to figure out how to save some of it, by turning it into something more appealing.
Nibsetc currently make DELICIOUS granola made from the pulp of cider apples, but there are more products in the pipeline using other "byproducts" from food manufacturing.
We discuss the current state of things, plus apps, schemes, simple tricks and great restaurants who will all help you to be part of a system that throws less edible food into landfill.
I also chat about one of the things I found challenging when I worked as a Food Buyer for a major supermarket.
I hope you enjoy!
You can see the full list of all of the things we recommend trying here:

This week Jen tasted everything she could at Balance Festival at the Truman Brewery and at Taste of London in Hyde Park (just the packaged food vendors) and shares the new products worth your time and taste buds' attention.
Three new crisp-alternative snacks and a host of products that will help your gut health thrive. And three cookies that probably won't, but it'll be worth it.
Plus, not from the festivals, there's a gooey, rich chocolate and peanut butter brownie she picked up and devoured from a coffee shop near Battersea Park, and a vegan sandwich from a small chain with locations in and near the City of London.

There are differences! I know, right? You've got to learn something new every day!
Let today be the day you learn the differences between all the things under the Ice Cream umbrella (probably not a good place to stand on a hot day... sorry, I shouldn't be allowed to write these.).
Did you know I run Ice Cream Tours of London? Can you imagine how much that person you love who loves ice cream will love YOU if you buy one for them? https://www.chocolateecstasytours.com/book-an-ice-cream-ecstasy-tour
If you want to make your own tour (obviously way less fun...), I've written a list of ice cream, gelato, sorbet and soft serve places in London that come highly recommended by me or by people I know: https://thenextdeliciousthing.com/the-best-places-for-ice-cream-and-gelato-in-london
In the episode I also mention products from Dusty Knuckle, Harrods and The Midnight Pantry.

Alongside some recommendations available by post anywhere in the UK and two places to visit in person in their recently opened branches in Covent Garden, this week's episode includes a longer interview with cookbook author and founder of the Retreat Chef Academy, Bettina Campolucci-Bordi.
The interview will be on YouTube soon, too.
Come back for the last two minutes of the podcast to hear the answers to a few follow up questions that I think you'll want to know. Specifically: how much money can a retreat chef make.

If you downloaded this before 7pm on Friday 20th May, please download again to fix the overlapping sound. Apologies the background noise will still be there!
This week I sat down with Great British Bake Off star Manon Lagreve and our mutual friend Emma Pudge who you might know as @emmahitsthespot on Instagram.
We ate two of the Toklas desserts and chatted about dessert (of course), cake and restaurant recommendations in London.
Listen here or watch on YouTube.
You can see all the recommendation, links to Emma's articles and read the transcript here: https://thenextdeliciousthing.com/2022/05/19/5-best-places-for-french-food-in-london-according-to-manon-lagreve/I'm still sending an email each week sharing the most interesting things I'm tasting in London and beyond. DISCLAIMER: The sound on this is really poor. I'm sorry!
This week I sit down (foolishly, in the not-empty restaurant) with the Head Baker of Toklas Bakery, Janine Edwards. You can watch it on YouTube if you prefer.
You'll learn a few things about what it's like to be a professional baker and what's special about Toklas.
In this week's podcast I also mention the newest place in Covent Garden and a fun twist on cake I stumbled upon at Coal Drops Yard market on Sunday.
Tomorrow I'll release my chat with Emma Pudge and Manon Lagreve over Toklas' desserts and share their restaurant recommendations. As I was buying myself a Bread Ahead doughnut last week I realised that, while most of the things that fill up the food feed of social media are much more attractive to look at than eat, there are some things that are worth the hype.
So, I asked some of my Instagram-famous mates to share which foods they think are WORTH THE HYPE.
Thanks to @ks_ate_here, @felicityspector, @eatnlondon, @fowlmouthsfood, @eastlondonmornings, @tiffcooksalot, @theboywhobakes, @ravneeteats, @rumbieshearer, @food_feels and @nicolaalamb.
The full list of foods is here: http://thenextdeliciousthing.com/instagram-food-thats-worth-the-hype
The bakery I mention in Oakham is featured on the website here: https://thenextdeliciousthing.com/2022/05/10/lily-honey-an-artisan-bakery-in-oakham-leicestershire/

* A new vegan chicken arrives in London and sweeps into Sketch and other chefs' hands.
* Where to go if you're vegan and missing Ikea's meatballs
* Creme brûlée crepes in a cone in Covent Garden

Plus the best places for chocolate in Yorkshire (at 10') and some of my favourite chocolate biscuits in London. Plus, the etymology of the word "scoff". Because that was missing from your life, right?
