This week, I cleaned out my office cabinet, and I found decades of journals dating back to 1976. They were filled with memories, emotions, repetitive thoughts, overthinking, and growth.
When writing them, the journals served as a therapeutic tool that helped me process feelings and provide clarity to my overthinking mind. Reading them now allows me to reflect on how my past experiences shaped my life today.

As summer comes to an end, I’ve given myself a homework assignment to reflect on the summer I turned 60.
When I was younger, I loved summer, but this year, I was dreading it. I faced a quieter summer, as my grown children were an ocean away, and many of my friends were travelling. But I was determined to make the most of the summer by embracing change and seeking joy in my life, regardless of the number on my birthday cake. So, I committed to learning new skills and picking up new hobbies: golf and Mahjong.

In this episode, I interview the talented Tony Shalhoub. He is best known for his iconic role as Adrian Monk in the hit series “Monk”, where he received multiple Emmy nominations and wins, a Golden Globe Award, and two SAG awards. He also starred as Abe Weissman in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," where he won a Primetime Emmy Award and two further SAG awards.
We talk about how Monk changed Tony’s life, and how playing the Obsessive-Compulsive Detective lead him to experience similar traits in his own life. We also delve into the behind the scenes of both Monk and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and what it was like working in television.
We talk about how Tony got into acting while studying at the University of Wisconsin, and how this led to him studying in Maine and the Yale Drama School. From here, we talk about his theater career, including a stint in Cambridge before moving to New York City, and eventually landing his breakout role on “Wings”.

Why is it that we’re often our own harshest critics? Why are we harder on ourselves for mistakes, we would easily forgive others for? I know I’ve experienced self-criticism, especially when it comes to perfectionism.
Society expects us to always do well and emphasises achievement. We’re told to work hard and be resilient. Social media fuels this by setting unrealistic standards we’ve all seen and come accustomed to but are still vulnerable to.
Perfectionism, the inner critic, and the fear of judgment can also play a psychological part of self-criticism.
Luckily, cultivating self-compassion and reframing negative thoughts can combat self-criticism. In this episode, I’ll discuss various tried-and-true practical strategies for living a more joyful, self-compassionate life.

As a society, we have a tendency to rely on external things for support and solutions. Things like good luck charms, superstitions and placebo effects are proof that the power to getting through hard times, actually comes from our minds - it’s called Associative Memory.
And it is in no way a bad thing - I use Associative Memory in my life by listening to classical music while I write, to tap into my creative mindset.

Fear is a primal instinct wired into our brains as a survival mechanism. It served our ancestors when facing immediate physical threats like predators, and now when we experience it, we feel as though we lack courage. However, courage and fear can coexist simultaneously, we just think they can’t because of our tendency to overthink and underestimate our own ability to cope. And one of the biggest fears for many people is the fear of failure. The stigma around failure being something to be ashamed of isn’t true, and holds us back from meeting our full potential. The New Year is an exciting time when all of us feel like we get to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Something that often goes hand-in-hand with the promise of a new year is the practice of setting resolutions, but I’m offering you a better way to start 2024 on this episode.
