In this Friday’s episode we dive into our solar power system! Our original plan was to connect to the grid and have a backup solar system, but that all changed when we got a quote for the thick cables that we needed to get power from the road to our house about 200 yards from the road.
Listen to learn more about why we decided to go fully off-grid; what it was like finding a solar company down here; the process of getting the whole system set up; turning power on for the first time; and what we’ve experienced using it so far.
Panama is very close to the equator and therefore gets a lot of sun all year long, so we are very happy to be utilizing the power of the sun!

We are back with Season 3 and as promised, we waited until we could record this episode in our aircrete dome home! We officially moved in about 2 weeks ago and have been so happy and busy here! There's was a lot of last minute work over the past few weeks before we moved in, to make the dome livable for us (including setting up our solar power system, getting our well water to the house, installing an outdoor shower and more).
There is still a number of things to complete on the home before we can say "it is done". BUT we are so excited and relieved to be finally living on our farm and in our new home. Our shipping container arrived, which we talk about, and it has been so sweet to have our stuff from California here with us now.
We are excited for this new season and hope you enjoy today's first episode!

Today is the last episode of Season 2! We are going to take a break while we complete our dome, receive our goods from our shipping container coming from USA, move into our dome, and work on some farm projects. We are excited to start Season 3 from our DOME HOME!
In our last episode for this season we share FIVE REASONS why we think you should move to Chiriqui, Panama. Whether you're looking for a quiet life in a gorgeous, tropical location; entertainment and culture in a new place; land to start or re-start the farm, homestead; or hotel of your dreams; or just want to try something short term - the province of Chiriqui in Panama is a great place to be.
We share reasons like having a small, convenient airport nearby; a city with lots of amenities; quiet communities; amazing beaches as well as cool mountain towns; everything being within a couple hours driving; and a lot more. We have lived here for a year now, so we are not experts, but we share what we've learned and observed so far. Enjoy and see you next season!

We've been living in Panama for ONE YEAR now! This Friday's episode is a little different. Eduardo and I (Nicole) came up with some questions for each other in regards to moving to and living in Panama for one year now. We didn't talk about these questions before, so these are spur of the moment answers.
** We apologize that a big thunder and rain storm came through while we were recording this episode, so there are some parts where the background rain noise is pretty loud. You can still hear us, please stick with us, it doesn't last too long. We hope you enjoy our conversation!

On this, our one year anniversary of moving to Panama, we have a short and sweet episode with some more dome home progress. We discuss where we're at in the building process and how we hope to be moving in by August (in about 6 weeks)!
We are preparing for final projects like wall finishes, paint, plumbing, electric, dome caps, custom doors and windows, and more! If you're interested in aircrete domes, we have a few other episodes like why we chose aircrete dome for our home here, and other progress episodes. As always, thanks for being here!

Well today's episode was recorded at the perfect time....you can hear a big rainstorm pretty much the whole time we're talking! But, you should be able to hear us just fine. In this week's episode we discuss the transition from the dry to rainy season; what it's like; what we love about the rainy season; a few things that we don't love about the rainy season and more.
Some of the things we love and talk about is the lush green everywhere; the waterfalls; less tourism; cooler weather; slow, cool evenings; and how fast everything grows- like our pasture and new trees! If you've been considering visiting Central America during the rainy season, but thought it was a "bad time" to come, then take a listen and maybe you'll change your mind.

We're back from our little break here in the podcast world and sharing about our trip to California. We visited California to pack up all our remaining belongings in preparation for our shipping container to take it all to Panama.
We discuss getting in & out of Panama City; plane rides; lots of great family time; how much we enjoyed doing all the great things we used to love about Turlock. Food, used book stores, strawberries, farmers market, perfect spring weather, In & Out Burger of course, linguica and more!

We will be taking a break from recording and sharing episodes for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
In this Friday's episode we just chit chat about life and the progress we've made lately on all our different projects. We share all about what's been going on with our aircrete dome home and what we'll be working on in the near future. We discuss our two year provisional residency and what that means versus what citizenship means.
Panama's presidential election just happened and we had fun watching it unfold. We talk about that for a while and how really calm everything felt compared to how things feel back in the States during election time. Then we finish out the episode with some fun farm updates including first tree plantings, paddock planning for rotational grazing, and our plans to start a small dairy! We hope you enjoy listening.
Our youngest son can be heard a lot in this episode, so hopefully you enjoy a cute baby voice every now and then.

Today Eduardo & I are talking all about bugs in Panama. We have experienced a lot of different wildlife after living in Panama, some amazing and beautiful, some not our favorite. In this episode we talk about the bugs that can be a nuisance here, how we deal with them, and how we avoid them if we can. We talk about finding a balance between good and "bad" bugs on our farm. And we discuss all the beautiful and amazing bugs we've seen here.
There is a lot of water here in Panama and a lot of sunshine, which both equal LIFE! Therefore, there is a plethora of bugs and wildlife here, which makes for daily sightings of all sorts of wonderful creatures. We hope you enjoy hearing our stories and experiences.

Today we are talking all about our daily life here in Panama. We thought it might be interesting for you to get a peak into what our daily life looks like with kids, cooking, farm stuff, building a house, relaxing, having a social life, and enjoying our slower lifestyle here in Panama.
So much of our life is spent outside, whether that is hanging laundry, reading books, swimming, cooking, relaxing, farm/dome stuff, walking/biking, beach fun, or just playing. We love our outdoor lifestyle, but also love our afternoons relaxing in the AC for a bit - slowing down and cooling down.
There are a lot of similarities between our daily rhythm here and in the USA, because of kids and trying to keep a consistent schedule. We hope you enjoy this episode. As always, thanks for tuning in!

To finish up our little three-part "reflection series," today we discuss what we have learned since moving to Panama 9 months ago. Things like how even though we live close to the beach - we still get excited every time we're there and it never gets boring; people take the time to really talk to you here; we miss cold weather; how tiny of a living space is do-able for us; enjoying life in a small, small town, and a few more. We, as always, try to intermix humor and learning experiences into our sharing.
If you are considering moving/relocating to Panama, this episode could give you some good insight. We love it here and we are grateful for all the growing experiences we've had since being here. We hope you enjoy today's episode!

Happy Friday! For a comical, inside look into our marriage, be sure to listen to the first 7 minutes of this episode! Ha....but for real, we are excited to talk about all that we've come to love about Panama and our little pueblo called Las Lajas, since living here for 9 months now!
We talk about the perks of living in a country that is not over-populated, a country that is lush and beautiful almost everywhere you look. We love living in a small town where kids can ride their bike around safely and you know all your neighbors, you see cowboys and cattle running down the road regularly, and most people's yards are covered with trees and beautiful bright flowers, our favorite local restaurants, and more!

In today's episode, we reflect on what we miss from our home country and hometown, after relocating to Panama. This podcast episode isn't about complaining or wishing that we still had all these things we discuss. We just thought it would be fun to share some (mostly materialistic) things that we wistfully wish for sometimes.
We talk about services we miss from USA as a whole, then share some California specific "things," and then end it by talking about what we miss from our hometown of Turlock, CA.
What we've really learned after moving to Panama is how much we don't need all that convenience. Most of it was fun to have and enjoyable and brought value to our life, but it wasn't vital for our happiness and of course we knew that, but living here has proved that!

Today's episodes is all about beaches! We are going to be talking about beaches (las playas) in Panama.
Living near the beach was one of the top reasons we decided to move to Panama. We wanted to have our farm but also be within a short drive from the beach - for surfing, playing, and all the beach fun. We are so blessed to have found our dream farm, that we're now building on, near one of the best & most gorgeous beaches in all of the country of Panama - Playa Las Lajas, Chiriqui.
We start the episode by discussing the coast lines here in Panama, the Pacific and Caribbean sides, types of beaches here, and what kind of services you can find at beaches here. Then we share our top 3 favorite beaches that we've been to here in Panama, and finish it off with some beaches that we still want to visit!
Sit back, grab a cold drink, and enjoy hearing about some gorgeous, quiet, hidden gems here in Panama.

We are so excited to be back with Season 2 of The PanaFamilia Podcast! Eduardo and I (Nicole) start this second season off with an episode all about our dome home progress.
We discuss how we've been working for about 4 weeks now on our aircrete dome home with the help of local builders, and an experienced dome builder from California. We share about the permitting process and what that has been like. We talk about the ups and downs of the building process, and much more.

Today is our final episode for Season One! We will be back in March 2024 with more episodes.
Today we're talking all about las vacas! We purchased ten pregnant Gyrlando heifers back in October and they have been living at our farm and enjoying all the lush grass. We talk about why we picked these cows and this breed. We share a bit about how we found them and what it felt like when they arrived at our finca.
We then spend time discussing our plan for the cows; genetics; growing our herd, etc; and most importantly how we'll use them to feed us and all our other future farm animals. They will be the top of the food chain, we'll pick a few to be our family milk cows.
Thank you for listening to Season 1 of our podcast! Come back in March 2024 for Season 2!

Today we have another longer episode (hopefully the last long one for a while)! the FINAL part 3 of the Panama protest series.
The Panama protests and roadblocks are over! The Panamanian people got what they asked for and we can all travel freely and get everything we need now.
We start out with a slight recap of why and when the protests started and how it lasted for 41 days (October 22, 2023-December 2, 2023). We share how it ended with the Supreme Court finding the mining contract unconstitutional and how the mine will cease operations. This is what the protestors wanted.
We discuss our uncertainty of whether or not the roadblocks would actually open. They finally did and have been open since! We touch a bit on the fallout from these roadblocks on the economy, agriculture, tourism, and more.
We then share what we learned during this challenging time. We learned a lot about the kindness and patience of the people here and found new strength within ourselves.
We are still 100% happy that we moved our life here and are excited to be able to get back to work on all our projects now!

This Friday's episode we're talking about designing our new home to be built on our farm here in Panama - which will be an aircrete dome home. We talk about how we came across aircrete and dome building; what kind of building material aircrete is; why we chose to use this alternative building method -pros and cons; how Nicole got Eddie on board with it- ha. We talk about finding our designer and builder; what the design process has been like; and when we hope to start building!
We're very excited to get started on creating a beautiful, healthy, safe dwelling for our family to live, sleep, be nourished, spend time together in, and host friends/family.

This week is our Panama City Trip Recap! We visited Panama City back in October 2023 for a 3 (turned 4) day weekend to visit the USA Embassy. We needed to go to the Embassy to complete some business regarding our Panamanian drivers licenses.
The trip included lots of good food, beautiful architecture, an amazing Airb&b, and….the beginning of the protests here in Panama. We ended up releasing our “Protests In Panama” episodes before this, because we thought they were more important to hear. But our Panama City trip was lots of fun and we’re excited to share it with you.

We bought land in Chiriqui, Panama! Today's episode is full of so much excitement, because we share all about our gorgeous piece of land & future farm, here in Las Lajas, Chiriqui, Panama. We purchased 7.1 hectares, or about 17 acres of overgrown pasture land, about 15 minutes from our favorite beach.
We discuss the 6 non-negotiable features we were looking for in a piece of farm land here. We then talk about how we spent multiple weeks looking at different pieces of property and the 2-3 properties that really stood out to us. We share how the farm we ended up buying was not actually listed. It was shared with us by a local Panamanian realtor, and owned by a local Panamanian woman. We share how quickly we fell in love with it, the process of looking at it, putting an offer in, etc.
Then we finish the episode up by talking about our vision for the farm, what we hope to build and accomplish there, and again how excited we are to get it all started!
If you're looking to start your own homestead or sustainable farm in Central America, this episode would be a great listen for you!
Thanks so much for listening.
