  • Mary and David reflect on the last two years of the Third Place Podcast and share what has been emerging in part because of this work.

Our society is in a moment where we need the principles of the Third Place now more than ever. As we wrestle with this difficult season, the question remains, how can we create safe places for ourselves and for others by offering postures of humility, curiosity, and offering generous perspectives.

Our hope is that you have learned to embodied the third place into your everyday lives and you feel equipped to offer a new depth and safety in all of your relationships. And as always, be well!

The Third Place Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners into the hard conversations that we have a tendency to avoid.

We “go there” on things such as…

How anger is beautifulHow to find presence amidst chaosHow to have difficult conversationsHow to be an allyHow to live with grief

The Third Place is a safe place where curiosity is encouraged, differences are welcomed, and empathy is embraced through healthy dialogue.

We've forgotten how to talk to each other… Life has become polarized and dualistic - you’re either with me or against me. To embrace the complex human experience is to see the world through other’s eyes. The Third Place podcast helps with the disconnect. This looks like less conflict and tension and more like a peaceful existence with others. The Third Place podcast restores the art of dialogue.

  • Lani is a well known coffee-writer and global food industry consultant, and has has published best-selling coffee books in the USA, Finland, Sweden, China, Korea, Thailand and the UK. In her work, she has written about the history of what a third place is through the lens of the coffee shop. She has over a decade of experience in every corner of the food industry (and every corner of the world), including serving as a barista in London.

This interview is a lot of fun and shows how important third places are in our lives. After talking with Lani, we would even say that to fully live this human experience is to include finding your own Third Place.

    *******

    www.lanikingston.com

In addition to writing books about coffee, Lani has written culinary articles for a range of print magazines and newspapers; set-up and managed London’s largest bean-to-bar chocolate factory; headed up a cooking school run entirely with ‘food waste’; worked as one of Chef Dan Barber’s senior managers at his World 50 Best Restaurant Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Upstate New York; judged food and coffee for the UK’s prestigious annual Great Taste Awards; set up food brands and retail stores in Singapore; and traveled and researched food production and preparation all around the world.

With over a decade of experience in every corner of the industry (and every corner of the world), Lani saw first hand where food businesses were most in need of support. In response, she started a global food and beverage support agency, Four Seasons of Food, offering on-call, highly experienced and affordable staff for the movers and shakers of the food world.

What Lani loves most about her work is that she never stops exploring and learning. Throughout her career, she's been lucky enough to bake pies in English bakeries, learn about hunting reindeer from Fäviken’s gunsmith, tap maple trees in Wisconsin, mill flour in an 1800’s Lincolnshire windmill, cook Peranakan cakes with Singaporean grandmothers, eat rattlesnake in the Arizona desert, forage for wild food at River Cottage, spend Swedish Midsummer on a potato farm, venture deep under the streets of London to harvest herbs from disused Air Raid bunkers, harvest cacao with local farmers in the hills of Kerala, India – and much more!

  • Conflict. As the world has continued to recover from lockdowns and physically being with people, the environment has left us all in a tense state and it seems like conflicts are all around us. We don't like conflict and most try to avoid it at all costs.

That being said, it is one of the topics that we enjoy talking about the most - not because we love conflict, but because every relationship has it. And when you can “do conflict” well - when you can meet in that messy grey third place and bring in both perspectives - then it can really lead to new depths of relationship, which is such a beautiful gift.

  • For many cisgender people who are working to become advocates for others, there can be a learning curve when it comes to using new pronouns for non-binary individuals.

One common hurdle for many people is that we are often surrounded by people who look like us. So when we have the opportunity to meet someone outside of our life’s experiences, and we can meet in a safe place to learn from each other, it’s a moment that we can come to treasure greatly in helping us to expand my worldviews.

That is why Mary and David were so happy to invite Silen Wellington the to podcast.

Silen Wellington is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and is striving to make the world a better place as the Alliance for Suicide Prevetion’s LGBTQ+ Youth Outreach Coordinator. Silen believes every young person needs a space to explore who they are and be witnessed for their unique gifts.

But it's also a formative time of life that gives us space to develop our relational skills and shape who we are. As we learn in our conversation with Chris Balme, there are new possibilities when we shift our perspective to view this as an opportunity to build into young people. This can radically change our perspective about this time and equip us as adults to be better guides for this foundational moment of life.

How do we talk about it with our partner? • The New Year is often a time to take a pause and hit a reset button so to speak. Sometimes this includes new mindfulness practices, sometimes new diet or exercise routines… It seems like the best times to make changes or create new habits are when there is a pivotal moment in your life. Well, for our guest Jo Schaalman, it was when she was literally hit by a truck.

Jo was a state champion gymnast, a nationally ranked diver and a diving coach. While prepping for medical school she was t-boned by a semi-truck during a cross-country bike tour. As a result of the accident, Jo was told that she wouldn’t live a normal life, let alone become a doctor. Her recovery process was both physically and emotionally grueling, but through her healing she was able to unlock some universal healing principles that could not only help, but other people as well. These discoveries are key foundations of the Conscious Cleanse. Because of her experience, Jo is driven to help people who think healing is out of their reach. Although she never became a doctor, Jo has been able to fulfill her lifelong mission of helping people heal.

    *******

Jo has impacted thousands of people through the live online Conscious Cleanse and sold over 25,000 of their best selling Conscious Cleanse book.

Jo graduated with honors from Grinnell College with a degree in Biology and Pre-Med. She’s co-published papers on women’s health and reproduction while working with Dr. Newcomer at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She studied at a Master’s level at the Nutrition Therapy Institute and worked closely with Dr. Theron Randolph, the father of environmental medicine and clinical ecology. She is also a nationally recognized yoga teacher who has taught workshops around the country and has been featured on Gaiam TV and Yogadownload.

If you've ever been told "you're too sensitive," you're probably immediately hearing that as a negative comment. But being a highly sensitive person is actually an innate and highly unique trait, and as HSP expert Julie Bjelland points out, it is not a disorder, but rather a trait that has helped us to evolve. People with this trait have specially developed abilities that helped them be good at finding food, mates, and a safe place for the tribe to live.

Nearly 20% of our population is considered Highly Sensitive, and in our conversation, we learn how to understand the experience of an HSP (highly sensitive person) so that we may tap into the gifts of sensitivity.

  • We are replaying one of our favorite episodes from this past year!

The Third Place is about creating space to have hard conversations. However, part of what is necessary for creating the element of safety required to even begin to discuss these difficult topics is first ensuring that our basic needs are met. The ability to engage in difficult conversations is also a sign privilege. If you’re hungry and worried about where your next meal will come from for you and your family, then you simply do not have the capacity to think about greater issues. You just need food. So, what are our basic needs? And, how can we do the work of first helping meet those needs before we try to engage in dialogue?

Dr. Liz, as she is affectionately called by friends and colleagues alike, is a social psychologist specializing in how past relationships unconsciously influence or re-emerge in present relationships, for better or worse. Born and raised at the Jersey Shore, she moved to NYC to study psychology and philosophy at Barnard College ('05) and research clinical epidemiology at the NYS Psychiatric Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at NYU ('14) and has since been teaching a variety of courses on social and emotional development, cognition, and social behavior at University of Pennsylvania, Brooklyn College, and NYU.

Dr. Liz is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor and a Program Coordinator in the NYU Psychology Masters Program, where she teaches research, statistics, and social behavior, while working to keep the day-to-day runnings of the program in high gear. Arguably obsessed with social-cognition, and the ways in which our knowledge systems, needs, emotions, and behaviors are often unconsciously learned and become resistant to change, she is currently exploring in her research how the need for shared reality with others can interplay with experience to create meaning systems that shape one's values and worldviews.

Outside of work, Dr. Liz spends a lot of time with her extraordinarily large immediate family (including her own twin sister, Sarah), and has hobbies that include houseplants, running, hiking, cooking, beach life, and spending time in the "emo/post-hardcore" music scene.

  • Menstruation and Periods are a normal part of life. Actually, let's start that sentence over... Life would not exist without menstrual cycles. So, why is there so much stigma around the topic?

This week we welcome Kate Morton from Funk It Wellness to talk about menstruation and throughout our conversation, there were several eye opening, paradigm shift moments that came from talking about periods and women's menstrual health in a safe space. Many women are continuing to learn about their health many, many years after they have had their first period. But also, other conversations around work, business, productivity, living one's best life, and even removing the negative effects of patriarchal systems are all connected to having thoughtful and open communication about periods.

  • "Hurt people, hurt people." This powerful and profound phrase holds so much truth. When you are a victim of any form of trauma, and you have the healing and ability needed to step back and look at the person who caused you pain, you can often find that the hurtful behavior patterns that someone exhibits stem from pain that another person had caused them earlier in their lives. We asked Tejal to join us today to specifically talk about Narcissistic behaviors and how these negative behavior patterns could be broken.

  • In July, we shared a conversation with Beverly Horstman & David Lapp of Braver Angels - an organization formed shortly after the 2016 election to bring reds and blues together and heal the wounds between left and right.

Today we welcome Chris and Kim Watson, two active members of Braver Angels who find themselves on different sides of the aisle, but within their marriage. One of the core functions of politics is to work towards figuring out our social contracts with each other… What are our rules as we work, play and all live together. Marriage is similar in that we’re constantly working on how we live together in our homes - so very political, just on a much smaller scale. Mary and I were both very curious to learn from Chris and Kim what they have learned from each other while being on opposite sides of politics.

They have been married for 33 years and live in Oregonia, OH, about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.

Braver Angels was inspired by the words of Abraham Lincoln, who not only called on Americans to summon the “better angels” of our nature — but called on us to find the courage needed to pursue a more perfect union, “with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right.”

To meet the current moment, at this time of national crisis, we need more than civility. We need to challenge ourselves to work together when we disagree. We need bravery.

  • We welcome back Sara Blanchard and Misasha Suzuki Graham of The Dear White Women podcast to tell us about their new book!

Sara and Misasha have become dear friends to The Third Place. They share with us why they wrote this book, and give their unique perspectives of race in America.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

This is a question that many seemingly well intentioned White people ask people of color. Yet, it places the responsibility to educate on their peers, friends, colleagues, and even strangers, rather than themselves. If you've ever asked or been asked "What can I do to help combat racism?" then Dear White Women: Let's Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism is the answer you're looking for.

From the creators of the award winning podcast Dear White Women, this book breaks down the psychology and barriers to meaningful race discussions for White people, contextualizing racism throughout American history in short, targeted chapters. Sara Blanchard and Misasha Suzuki Graham bring their insights to the page with:

    Personal narrativesHistorical contextPractical tips

Dear White Women challenges readers to encounter the hard questions about race (and racism) in order to push the needle of change in a positive direction.
