    Christmas party

At time of recording, it’s the day after our Christmas party, so we complete all this chat about booze and running with some hungover run chat. Swiftly followed by whether or not runners should wear gilets (discuss). All of this before we start talking about how our training is going.

And then we’re on to our absolute dream Christmas dinner, from aperitif to pudding. Yes, this isn’t to do with running, but when have we ever said that we only talk about running? Never. Don’t listen hungry. We finish by launching into part 1 of a two-part Christmas Quiz. The rest will be in our boxing day podcast, and we can’t wait!

  • Welcome to Am I Nuts. This is the last episode in a special series of ten weekly podcasts from us at the Women’s Running podcast. I am your host Esther Newman, and she is your other host Holly Taylor.

Hol and I are natural born worriers, but with many of our worries, we’ve thought we were the only ones. We thought we were nuts. During this series, we’ve been chatting about the worries that make us feel that way – and ten episodes isn’t enough! If this episode resonates with you, or you have something you think we should talk about, then please email us at [email protected] and fingers crossed we’ll roll out another series.

    Christmas worries

We’ve gone seasonal for this episode: are we nuts for worrying about Christmas? Holly, as her name suggest, has always been very festive focused, and loved the season, but now is teetering on the edge of getting stressed about all the Christmas things: the money, the socializing, the expectation of joy. We talk through the stress of cooking, the stress of families and the stress of producing perfect presents.

    Friends

This is a very personal one for Esther: are we nuts for worrying about how many friends we have? Friendship groups wax and wane, but sometimes it can be easy to compare ourselves with TV programmes and stuff online that suggests that we “should” have hundreds of close friends. We delve into how our groups have changed since childhood, the feelings that make us feel inadequate in terms of our friends, and what we do to support the friendships that we have. We also talk about the concept of a “best friend” and whether that’s something that grown-up women need, as well as the difference between men’s friendships and women’s friendships.

We start off by talking about running. Controversial. But then for some reason move on the Bath Christmas market, which befuddles us, but do please still come and visit Bath and top up our precarious economy.

    Alcohol and running

And we talk at some length about running and drinking, something which we’re focusing on at the moment as we enter the festive season and stare January in the face. So small trigger warning here about chat that skirts addiction. Do please get in touch if you’re a sober listener or you have experience of drinking/not drinking in terms of your running and have a story to tell on that side of things.

    Worrying

This episode concentrates on anxiety, with Holly leading the worrying charge asking Dr Juliet McGrattan if there is actually a physical kickback from worrying too much about ourselves. We talk about panic attacks, and also hormonal shifts that can affect our moods and our anxiety. Juliet talks us through figuring out the difference between being anxious about something, and anxiety that might be causing a problem in terms of our day to day life. Are we nuts for worrying about worrying?

    Storms

We start off by talking about the man of the moment: Storm Bert. We’ve both had some experiences and are keen to chat about whether or not we deserved the weather that we got. I ran in it and Holly drove in it, and I think she came off worse.

    Awards

We’ve also got boozed up over the weekend because we landed a couple of awards, and so we got a bit giddy on the GWR back from Paddington (sorry to everyone on Coach A). We do eventually get back to running as the marathon is preying on Holly’s mind, and my lack of strength is preying on mind.

We’re joined by dietitian Charlie Watson again here to talk about the biggest hot topic in the world of running – and that’s the worry about pooing ourselves. This is the one pod in the series where we focus on running, so apologies for anyone who isn’t a runner, but Charlie’s advice here is pertinent to all of us when it comes to our diets and unexpected reactions our bodies might take. We talk about the food we should be avoiding or eating before and during a run, and also behaviours we can adopt to reduce the chances of gastic distress.

    Berlin and bad germs

Holly is back from Berlin and has brought all the germs, and also the controversy of German pubs still allowing smokers in them. This leads on to my weird sense of smell, which *then* and you have to forgive us - leads us on to pretending to be beauty influencers.

    Make-up

Speaking of beauty and perfume, we’d love to know where you stand on make-up and running – do you wear make-up before you run or race? And why? Or is it the very last thing you think about? Give us a shout on [email protected] so we can kick of the debate!

    Garmin

Speaking of debates, the Garmin chat rages on – some of you love them, some of you hate them, so we take your advice on board and consider other options on the market.

We also talk about marathons not being as hard as we think they are, training in the cold, and scary people on Facebook.

    Should we worry about sleep?

In this episode we’re mostly worrying about sleep, or lack of it. Lack of sleep can affect all of us at one time or another, for myriad external and

internal reasons. Obviously there’s that time around early parenthood, but also perimenopause, general aging, anxiety and mental health that can affect all of us. But I’ve been getting worried about how insomnia can have a more long-term effect on our physical health. We talk about the risks of lack of sleep, but also oversleeping, occasional sleep deprivation, strategies for overcoming occasional insomnia. Are we nuts?

Then there’s a bit of a trigger warning, as we discuss weightloss and slimming organisations, at about 25 minutes in for about 10 minutes. So do please skip if this is not useful or appropriate for you.

    Running controversies

We then also talk about a couple of running controversies that have been floating about on social media over the past couple of weeks. We would love to know your thoughts on annoying running influencers and that old chestnut: dog owners

What you might not also know is that she’s an NHS dietician and she writes lots of brilliant articles for us on nutrition. We wanted to ask her one of our biggest worries – should we be as concerned as media tells us we should be about the amount of sugar we eat? We talk about PCOS, about our diets generally, and about restricting sugar and carbohydrates (or not).

We’re often told on social media that we shouldn’t worry about what other people are thinking because we literally can’t control it, but it’s something that in we want to discuss as we worry about it all the time! Are we nuts for worrying about other people’s opinions?

    Roast dinners

We’re discussing the hottest topic in running– where to get the best post-run roast in the Bath area. Running is optional. This is all on the back of us talking about nutrition and the best things to eat before, during and after a run.

Small aside here: we talk about food you should and shouldn’t eat in pregnancy and I truly don’t know what I’m talking about – please take no medical advice from me.

    Running nutrition

So what do we eat before our runs, and during them, and are these the right things? And of course because we’re talking about food, we end up talking about ALL food.

  • Welcome to Am I Nuts. This is the third episode in a special series of ten weekly podcasts from us at the Women’s Running podcast. I am your host Esther Newman, and she is your other host Holly Taylor.

To coincide with World Mental Health Day this  October, we wanted to explore some of the things that we’ve talked about on our big podcast – that’s the Women’s Running podcast  – that don’t necessarily have anything to do with running. Hol and I are natural born worriers, but with many of our worries, we’ve thought we were the only ones. We thought we were nuts. So for this series, we’re going to be chatting about the worries that make us feel that way.

If this episode resonates with you, or you have something you think we should talk about, or get an expert on to discuss, then please email us at [email protected]

In this episode we talk about fear and anxiety around change. We know it’s quite normal to worry about change, but when does that fear or concern turn into something that’s not normal? When does worry turn into anxiety? And are we nuts for worrying about it at all?

  • Welcome to episode 219 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running.

    Marathon times and Garmin

Today we’re talking about predicted marathon times, and whether we should be realistic or whether we should aim high. And we also chat about Garmin, and all the stats we have access to via our watches, and what access to those stats does to our anxiety levels. Hol is finding it particularly hard, so we chat about ways in which we can manage that data (or not look at it at all). Advice on tech is, as always, very welcome!

    Aging

In this episode, we’re dealing with something I’m terrified of, which is aging. And, we’ve brought along the glorious Dr Juliet McGrattan to talk sense, dispel myths and make us feel empowered, when we ask her, Am I nuts for worrying about aging?

We are recording live in person! We’re sitting on Holly’s sofa in her brand new home, having a few technical issues. Do please note at this point: when Holly talks about staining her sofa, what she means is she spilled coffee all over it – nothing more sinister.

    Gym and strength

We’re catching up seconds after I’ve had my very first session down the gym, so we talk about strength training, and gymtimidation, and all that kind of stuff.

    Royal Parks

And then I’ve got lots to talk about as I’ve just returned from the Royal Parks Half, which I want to thoroughly debrief – if you ran it too, do please get in touch and let us know what your experiences were as well.

We have just enough time to talk about a brand new running controversy and the inherent sexism in race cut-off times, so we get quite hot under the collar.

    Mental health

To coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10th October, we wanted to explore some of the things that we’ve talked about on our big podcast – that’s the Women’s Running podcast (do seek it out if you don’t already listen to it) – that don’t necessarily have anything to do with running. The worries we have

So for this series, we’re going to be chatting about the worries that make us feel that way, and for some of them we’re going to be bringing in experts to dispel those concerns, while for others it’ll just be me and Holly telling each other our deepest fears in the hope that we’re not the only ones and that we’re not nuts.

Am I nuts for worrying about cancer?

In this first episode, we’re dealing with a biggie, and we’re pretty sure we’re not alone here. For this one, we’ve invited Dr Juliet McGrattan along to soothe our fears, when we ask her, Am I nuts for worrying about cancer?
