We missed recording a season of Think Like a Producer in 2023 so instead we recorded a bonus episode covering our updates from the year, what we've learned, and what we're exploring in 2024 as media and podcast producers.

When it comes to video recording your show, don't sleep on the lighting. You probably already know this, especially if you've seen plenty of bad lighting in videos on YouTube, but you may not know the basics of getting good lighting, at home or in a studio. We're showing you some simple tips for upleveling your lighting, with the example of how we light our clients in the studio to see a case study.

“Choose the focus of the media you're about to create: Do I want this to be audio-first or video-first?”
One of the most important things to get right when filming your show, at home or in a studio, is the audio. It's easy to get excited about nice cameras and lights and sets, but if you don't pay attention to your audio quality, your episodes will fall flat. That's why we are showing you 2 solid ways to consistently capture good audio for your show, and what to think through as you decide which to use.

“Crew and talent are just different types of people to work with.”
As we say in this episode, there's no way to know all of the things you need to plan for and prepare for as a producer of a video shoot until you've done it. However, we do want to help you speed up the learning curve as much as possible, so this episode covers the main pitfalls of first time video creators (especially in podcasting) and how to avoid them. We talk to our friends Heather and Cally, co-hosts and producers of multiple education podcasts, about how they have learned to organize their teams, talent, and time to make their video shoots flow smoothly. Like we keep saying, this is why it pays to hire an experienced crew, but even if you're DIYing it, this episode will save you lots of time and stress.

One of the most common, and most avoidable, issues we see podcasters and YouTubers make is that they record lots of great content and then it . . . never sees the light of day. It's so easy to get excited about a video shoot and when it's over, assume you are done. But the real work happens in what we call post-production -- the project management, editing, and strategy that actually gets your videos out into the world in a timely manner looking their best. This is something we both do professionally, so we wanted to walk you through this often-overlooked part of the process of making great media for your business.
