Dr. Paul Hetzel is a retired medical oncologist based in Springfield, Massachusetts. He found photography to be a welcome respite from his fast-paced work and lifestyle as a physician.
We talked about the power of printing one's own photography and how Dr. Hetzel has found a wonderful group of fellow photographers in Photo Arts Xchange, an event hosted by Connecticut photographer, Steve Sherman.
Another important point that Dr. Hetzel makes is the importance of looking in one's own backyard for "travel" photography. In other words, you don't have to travel too far to make great photographs.
What challenges Dr. Hetzel the most as a photographer? What can make or break an image? Listen in to find out!

Eric Francis, an editorial and sports photographer, based in Omaha, Nebraska is following his instinct to photograph families who remain in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. His goal is to photograph as many families as possible in the "402" area code.
While some call these "porch sessions" or "frontstep project", for Eric it is not only about photographing families or individuals but also checking in with them to see how they are feeling on the day he photographs them. This becomes a much richer record of how a community, and in some sense, the entire nation is dealing with the challenges and the circumstances we face today.
Read more about the project here.

With COVID-19 pandemic affecting all of us around the world, Paul's photography project to photograph 100 families in his community speaks to his newspaper instincts to document their lives as best as he can.
Following "social-distancing" guidelines as set forth by the state of Wisconsin, where he lives, Paul has embarked on an ambitious project that will serve as his community's only tangible document from these very challenging times.

Too many people get into photography because of the tools of the trade. Chloe Lodge's book, "For the Love Of The Photograph" instills in you the idea that one must be first fully present to be successful as a photographer. I consider her book required reading for both professionals who have been at it for a while and for those just getting started in the pursuit of seeing and making photographs. The conversational style of the book is at once endearing, making it exciting to turn the page and learn something totally new and useful. If you are a photographer, I do hope you will consider buying it to read out loud for yourself from time to time. The words and the suggestions in it will enrich your life as a visual communicator.

As the world marks this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27th), it is fitting that this short podcast interview with photographer Danny Weiss makes its appearance here. For the last three years, Danny has photographed 18 men and women who are survivors of The Holocaust. He has done so to celebrate who they are, and more than that who they have chosen to become after their escape from the atrocities in Europe. He found them not brooding their fate, but embracing a new life and thriving, running businesses, raising families, and becoming citizens of their new home in America.
