  • If you've always wanted to work in music, but aren't sure where to start, then this episode is for you!

Back in July, VOCAL GIRLS was invited by Truck Festival to do a panel talk at their Tap Room stage: ‘Breaking Into the Music Industry with Vocal Girls’. Hosted by VOCAL GIRLS founder and music journalist, Megan Graye and VOCAL GIRLS content producer Dani Murden, the panel featured Cherym, Indy Brewer, and members of the VG team.

With different guests working in different areas of the industry (musician; management; PR; graphic design; and journalism), we chatted about how everyone started out, their fears, failures, and hot tips for those taking their first few steps.

We want to send a big thank you to all of our guests for being so gracious and honest and to Truck Festival 2023 for inviting us down! You can now listen to the full audio now from wherever you get your podcasts!

  • The VOCAL GIRLS podcast is the series where music journalist and VOCAL GIRLS Founder, Megan Graye, chats to artists about their past, present and future, and the music that intertwines these experiences. This series is a collaboration with The Great Escape Festival, so for this series Megan will be interviewing four key artists from their line-up. This week, Megan's speaking to singer-songwriter, Rachel Chinouriri.

After recording some songs on a budget mic and her mum’s laptop aged 17, Rachel released her first ep ‘bedroom tales’ on Soundcloud. Since then she’s signed a record deal with Parlophone, had her music shared by her personal idols Coldplay, and most recently bagged a Hottest Record on Clara Amfo’s show on R1 with her latest single, ‘All I ever asked'.

Rachel’s sound is delicate, soothing and layered. Her lyrics touch on relationship struggles and personal darkness, but her vocals feel bright and sincere. Her acoustic version of her song ‘So my darling’ has been streamed almost 10 million times.

Megan and Rachel chatted a few weeks back about her stage fright, why she decided to speak out against unconscious bias in the industry and what we can expect from incoming new music.

    Rachel's song choices:

Past: The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

Present: Haunted House - Holly Humberstone

Future: Etta Marcus - Salt Lake City

Sinead’s music has strong and clear intentions. Focussed on language, Sinead uses melody to add power to her words, making listening experiential. Combine that with the music of guitarist Julian Hanson and drummer Oscar Roberston and you have a distinctive and original sound that is instantly recognisable. Originally from Limerick, Sinead studied fashion design in Dublin before working as a full-time designer for Galliano in Paris and then Vivienne Westwood in London, until she felt a call to start creating in the music world.

In this episode Megan and Sinead about the music that led her to becoming an artist, ‘responding to the room’ in a live setting and what we can expect from her highly anticipated debut album, Time Bend and Break The Bower.

  • The VOCAL GIRLS podcast is the series where music journalist and VOCAL GIRLS Founder, Megan Graye, chats to artists about their past, present and future, and the music that intertwines these experiences.

This week, Megan chats to Priya Ragu, who’s just released her new single, Illuminous. Born in Switzerland to Tamil parents, Priya grew up singing and playing traditional music with her family, but was deterred from pursuing music full time. After years of pursuing her passion around work, Priya decided it was time to take a chance on herself and teamed up with her brother, a producer under the name of Japhna Gold. Together they created her debut mixtape, damnshestamil which came out last year. Priya’s unique and seamless blend of traditional tamil music and modern Rnb and electro (Raguwavy) is original and attention grabbing. This authenticity hasnt gone unnoticed; she’s already been signed to warner, toured and made music with Jungle and been listed on the BBC sound of 2022 poll.

In this episode we chat about her journey to pursuing music full time, what it’s like to work alongside her brother, and the necessity for more South Asian artists in the music industry.

Present: You Save Me - Alicia Keys & Snoh Aalegra
