  • I sat down with Michael Coles, a 49-yr-old autistic man, married, father of 2, & a podcaster. Michael shares his powerful story of experiencing autistic burnout, offering insights into what contributed to it, how he recovered, & how he now works to support his mental health & well-being. We explore key topics like people-pleasing, ableism, workplace accommodations, at-home support, the power of authenticity, & compassionate support from others. It is a must-listen for anyone who is autistic or who wants to better understand the unique challenges autistic individuals face & the real risk of burnout.

Guest Bio: Having been diagnosed 3 times, first with PDD-NOS back when he was 3, then diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at 35, then rediagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2017, he has been struggling with high levels of anxiety & stress his whole life. Late last year, he was hospitalised as a result of chronic stress from changes being imposed on him, due to a change in staff members, & their non-acceptance of Michael’s way of working, which previously was going well with accepting staff members. As a result, he needed to resign from his job, & now, through the NDIS, he can access therapies not previously available to Michael. Also, recently diagnosed with Expressive & Receptive Language Disorder.

  • In this episode, we’re joined by Dr. Denis Belicki, a clinical psychologist with over 40 yrs of experience. His impressive career has spanned forensic psychology, private practice with his wife, & his current role as a digital nomad, providing remote therapy to healthcare professionals. Dr. Belicki has dedicated much of his work to supporting emergency first responders, veterans, physicians, & nurses who face many mental health challenges working in high-stress environments.

We explore the profound impact burnout is having on the medical profession & why it’s crucial to care for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

    Key points include:

    1. The toll burnout is taking on physicians & nurses, & how it's affecting the healthcare profession as a whole

    2. What doctors & nurses can do to protect their well-being & manage burnout

    3. The structural changes needed to better support healthcare professionals

    4. A vital message: if we don’t care for our caregivers, there may come a time when no one is left to care for us.

This is a critical episode not only for healthcare workers but also for any government or non-government organisation with the power to make changes. Our health professionals need structural support, & change is needed NOW.

Before tuning in, please note that this EP includes discussions of suicide, so take care if this is a difficult topic for you. Please see below for further information regarding connecting with mental health support.

Tune in to this important conversation, & join us in shining a light on the urgent need to care for our caregivers.

  • Introducing Ep and Guest, Daniel Ewers

16+ yrs in the business world, Chartered accountant & CFO. Daniel reached the pinnacle of that career at age 29. Life on the surface seemed perfect, but what he didn’t realise was that he was right on the edge of a 4 yr burnout & recovery - cued by a huge panic attack in 2019. During this burnout or what he calls a cocktail of depression & PTSD, Daniel heavily researched the subject areas of epigenetics, accelerated learning, wellness, neuroscience, positive psychology, & human potential before discovering the art & the love of coaching. After 70+ books, 1000+ podcasts, and likely 70,000 rabbit holes of knowledge & self-experimentation, he finally put the deep exhaustion & recovered from burnout. This experience was so severe for Daniel he called it a 'spiritual dislocation' - an erosion of the human soul. “I believe I went through this experience so others don't have to.” ~ Daniel Ewers. Join us to explore Daniel's story & gain valuable insights into recognising burnout, understanding its causes, & taking steps toward recovery. Learn from Daniel how to navigate significant changes in career, self, & life. Daniel is now on a mission to not only help others recover from and ideally prevent burnout, but to go a step beyond - high performance - which he calls an adventure to excellence. Through high performance coaching, Daniel has, now, found his true passion in the world, where he reinforces people (who they are & what they do) while teaching them world-class high-performance principles. Daniel’s coaching & ethos amplifies clients into the feeling of confidence, full-engagement, & the joy of being their absolute best. • Welcome to "When Burnout Becomes Reality," where we delve into the depths of our mental health journeys, shedding light on the often-overlooked shadows of burnout. In this episode, we embark on a crucial exploration: "How to Stop Burnout From Sneaking Up on You?"

We begin by introducing Nick Petrie's three degrees of burnout and how to respond to each level of burn. Petrie's work provides a valuable framework for understanding the progression of burnout, from early warning signs to more severe stages. By recognising these stages, we can intervene early and effectively to prevent burnout from taking hold.

I'll also share my own insights, drawing from both lived and clinical experiences. Over the years, I've seen how burnout manifests in various ways and have developed strategies to counteract its effects. From setting healthy boundaries to incorporating mindfulness practices into daily routines, there are practical steps we can all take to protect our mental health.

Throughout this episode, I'll weave in personal anecdotes and clinical observations to illustrate the complexities of burnout and offer actionable advice. My hope is that by the end of this episode, you'll not only understand how to prevent burnout but also feel empowered to make changes that support your well-being.

So, join me as we uncover the nuances of burnout and learn how to sneak up on it before it sneaks up on you.

I reveal the habits that helped me stay healthy during this transition, the challenges I faced, and my plans moving forward.

  • About the Podcast

Welcome to When Burnout Becomes Reality, a podcast that uniquely blends personal experience with the science of burnout. I'm Shannon Swales, your host & a caregiver professional who has not only lived through burnout but also possesses scientific knowledge & skills to treat conditions like burnout, compassion fatigue, & vicarious trauma.

**You can discover more of my story through reading my memoir Nothing Left to Give: A psychologist's path back from burnout www.burnoutpsychologysupport.com/buy-my-book

    Development of the Podcast

I started this POD out of my own burnout, compassion fatigue, & vicarious trauma experience. I noticed how great connecting with others who got what you were going through felt. It helped me feel less alone in it. It helped me to feel understood and unbeknownst to them; it helped me learn from the wisdom they had gained to help me recover and grow. This is why I continue to showcase lived experience guests on the POD. As I healed from burnout, I moved back into my work as a psychologist, & that is when I added the scientific knowledge aspect into the POD, having expert guests like myself share their wisdom to help others. I also share my burnout, recovery, growth story from the beginning until now & everything in between. I am incredibly proud of this POD and enjoy every minute of producing it. It is a twice monthly (since May 2024) podcast with an episode released on the first & third Thursday of every month. It comes in visual YouTube & audio formats (available wherever you listen to podcasts - go to www.burnoutpsychologysupport.com/podcast for links). Each month, we will endeavour to showcase a lived experience guest who courageously comes on the POD to share their raw account of burnout to recovery & beyond or an expert guest, including me, who shares their knowledge & skills in this area of burnout. All episodes are hoped to assist others in preventing, responding & growing from burnout.

  • In this episode, I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Shannon Bowman, the driving force behind Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling (see more about Shannon below). Our in-depth discussion centred around a crucial subject - worker well-being within the organisational context. We explored common pitfalls that workplaces often stumble upon, inadvertently contributing to poor well-being outcomes for workers. Drawing from Shannon's extensive experience, we examined real-life examples of organisations' successes and triumphs, shedding light on effective strategies for preventing burnout and other adverse outcomes. Furthermore, our conversation unravelled the intricate challenges and rewarding benefits associated with implementing psychosocial safety measures within organisations. We navigated through the complexities that both employers and employees encounter when striving to create a work environment that fosters mental health and overall well-being.

Guest: I'm a passionate mental health professional and a pioneer in therapeutic approaches and business innovation. As director of Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I lead a team of skilled professionals focused on improving the well-being of our community in Geelong. We are particularly proud of our work with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which has profoundly impacted our clients' recovery journeys. My dedication to improving others' lives earned me an Achievement Award from the Geelong City Council - an honour that recognises my efforts as a therapist and entrepreneur. I continually introduce new, effective treatment methods and business practices to our psychotherapy and counselling services. Beyond therapy, I actively share my expertise on mental health issues through various channels such as podcasts and discussions. I also speak at workplaces to share insights on enhancing employee well-being and resilience. As a testament to my resilience, I have used my personal experiences with disabilities since birth as a driving force to surpass conventional limitations. Through my work at Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I focus on accessibility and inclusivity, reflecting my commitment to enriching society and offering compassion to those battling psychological challenges. She shares with us the common challenges people face trying to incorporate REST into their schedules and practical takeaway steps to overcoming them. Marissa also highlights the many benefits of making space for REST in your life and how they can help you commence REST in your schedule and continue with it long after recovery from burnout.

  • Ep 26 allows the listener to learn from Clinical Psychologist Rebecca Black about two important areas associated with burnout: chronic illness - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia, & Unrelenting Standards Schema. Schemas are mental structures of preconceived ideas, a framework representing aspects of the world, or a system of organising & perceiving new information. Rebecca blends her lived experience in both areas with her experience as a schema therapist working with people with chronic illnesses & chronically stressed states such as burnout. She shares her knowledge & tips on noticing & moving away from unrelenting standards & breaking the chronic stress cycles of living with chronic illness. She teaches us a sustainable way to live.

Guest: Rebecca is a clinical psychologist & coach who has spent the last 15 years of her life grappling to understand & overcome her chronic illnesses (CFS and fibromyalgia) & burnout experiences - a mission that she has accomplished! Rebecca is now passionately dedicated to helping other therapists & health professionals move away from these experiences and towards creating a sustainable career and life - one that is balanced, joyful, energetic, abundant & fulfilled - so they can in turn pass this gift of sustainable living on to their clients too.

A story that spans over 20 years with the ebbs and flows of burnout as she comes up against several systemic issues that clash with her values, interests and needs. Listen in to see what these commonly found system factors were that impacted her mental health and how she navigated through it. Her story is so rich that I have split it into two parts. Part 2 will be release two weeks after this episode. Her experience allows us to recognise and reflect on what might be happening to us and inspires and encourages us to make changes to support our well-being. No job/career is worth our health.
