Millie spoke with Toolroom’s Community Manager Victoria Smith for this week's episode.
Toolroom Records, a label by renowned DJ and producer Mark Knight, is helping to combat the gender imbalance in the music industry through a new platform dubbed #WeAreListening created by Victoria in 2018. Whether women are just starting to learn how to write music or already have managers, the platform is open to women at any level in the industry.
Victoria’s role at Toolroom is so varied, every day is different and somehow she still manages to take time to create change within the industry.

You might have seen Olivia Dean roaming the country in an open yellow van this summer - a summer without live music wasn’t an option for Olivia.
Her yellow truck tour was a way to maintain the momentum she’s been building ever since her poignant debut single, ‘Reason To Stay’, caught the eye of London Label AMF and since, Olivia has amassed over 8 million streams on Spotify alone.
An emotional and confessional songwriter, her musical journey started at a very young age, resulting from parents who encouraged her natural talents before recognising them herself.
From her ingenious truck tour to her dulcet tones to her role-model potential, Olivia Dean is fast becoming a household name and an artist who knows exactly how to draw a silver lining from even the darkest of clouds. I know I say this every episode, but it was a real pleasure to chat with Olivia Dean for this episode, and here it is….

Nadia Khan has been working in the music industry for nearly 20 years and has been on AIM’s board since 2017, and more recently was appointed AIM chair after nominating herself for the role.
Nadia’s own label CTRL Records is focused on spotlighting female talent, releasing artists including Lady Lykez, Laughta and Lisa Mercedez. As a passionate activist for diversity, equality and inclusion, last year, she launched ‘Women In CTRL’ – a platform to empower and connect women and minority genders across the industry, with over 2000 members and growing.

Our first guest of the season is singer-rapper Ashnikko, who is on an astronomical rise. She’s just released her hotly anticipated DEMIDEVIL mixtape which has gained critical acclaim from the Observer to NME. She’s been named as one to watch by Vogue, Elle and the Sunday Times Style Magazine for her acerbic lyrics that swing punches at the patriarchy as well as promoting sexual liberation.
Since the release of her Hi, It’s Me EP in 2019, Ashnikko has gained nearly 2 million followers on TikTok, with Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish stating their fans too. Her new mixtape is heavily inspired by naughties icons like Avril Lavigne and Kelis and sees her collaborate with the ethereal pop star Grimes and underground New York rapper Princess Nokia too.

Chelcee Grimes is a Singer, songwriter and Tranmere Rovers LFC footballer. She’s currently successfully straddling a career in both music and sports.
Chelcee featured several times in the writing credits for Dua Lipa’s self-titled first album and also for her more recent, grammy nominated ‘Future Nostalgia’ album. She’s also written for the likes of Kylie Minogue and Little mix to name a few and her debut single ‘Just Like That’ landed in Spotify UK’s New Music Friday Top 10 also.
Chelcee presented during the BBC’s Women’s World Cup coverage and is now one of the anchors of Match of the day x!
Chelcee Grimes is not only inspirational in the way she manages her multi-hyphen career but also online. You only have to spend a short while on her instagram stories for her positivity to rub off on you.

Tipped as “one to watch” by NME, Mixmag, Billboard, DJ Mag and BBC R1’s Pete Tong, TSHA is a London based producer who is quickly emerging as one of the most exciting young artists around. Her forthcoming EP “Flowers”, without doubt her most ambitious and accomplished body of work so far, was released by Ninja Tune in October and featured collaborations with Gabrielle Aplin and Malian griot music group Trio Da Kali.
Entirely self-taught, TSHA released her debut EP “Dawn” in 2018, setting out her stall as an artist with an ear for warm, groove-laden basslines and bright, melodic hooks. Her follow-up single “Sacred” - released in 2019 - immediately caught the ear of Simon Green aka Bonobo, who included it on his “fabric presents” compilation album.
TSHA wrote her track ‘Sister’ during lockdown after she found out she had an older half sister. Since, she’s been selected as a BBC Radio One Future Artist and has featured on notable playlists on both Apple and Spotify, and also appearing on a billboard in Times Square for the latter!
In this episode of Women in Music, Millie speaks to TSHA about getting started as a producer, collaborating, DJing everything from weddings to corporate events to festivals, female collectives and loads more.

Most commonly found in the comfort of capturing London's live music scene, Isha Shah has displayed a unique view to the sights and sounds that pass this busy city's streets daily.
While being one of London's most established photographers, Isha also delves into many of the creative fields such as radio, events, podcasting, videography, social media, expanding her craft and defining herself as a creative than a single label bracket.
While immersed in the music scene, some of Isha's regular clients include, Mahalia, Jax Jones, Mr Eazi, Lewis Capaldi, Maya Jamma, Miguel, Oh Wonder, Interscope, Nike, Adidas, Apple Music, Durex.
Being heavily engaged in London's culture, Isha set up her own creative networking hub called Root Creatives where creators all over the UK, come together and collaborate on projects while networking and expanding their empire via personal projects.

For this week’s episode Millie spoke to singer/songwriter and poet Arlo Parks.
Growing up in South West London, half Nigerian, a quarter Chadian and a quarter French, Arlo Parks learned to speak French before English.
She has always been introspective; as a child she’d write short stories and create fantasy worlds, later journaling and then obsessing over spoken word poetry, reading American poets such as Ginsberg and Jim Morrison and watching old Chet Baker performances on YouTube.
Fast forward to 2020 and Arlo Parks has announced the release of her debut album - Collapsed in Sunbeams, which is to be released on transgressive records on 29th jan 2021. She has graced the cover of Evening Standard Magazine, NME and Dork Magazine as well as being included on the 2020 Dazed 100 List.
Arlo Parks has performed stand-out shows for COLORS and NPR's Tiny Desk series and was one of only three artists to perform at Glastonbury this year. She was recently asked by Phoebe Bridgers to accompany her for a Radio 1 Piano Session, where the pair performed a cover of Radiohead's 'Fake Plastic Trees'
Arlo Parks is, without a doubt one, of the most exciting new artists at the moment and it is such a privilege to have her on the podcast.

For their live shows, House Gospel Choir bring together a group of outstanding singers, a full house band, and a DJ to create an effortless fusion of the biggest house and gospel tunes.
Most recently, they’ve released an album. Re//Choired is a spirited and feel-good celebration of house music and features Todd Terry, Wookie, DJ Spen and others to re-choir some of the biggest house tracks out there.
You might also know House Gospel Choir from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, where they performed last month.

Having won over the likes of Taylor Swift, Lewis Capaldi and Sam Smith, she has progressed from busking on the streets of Brighton to selling out London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, headlining her own U.S. tour and landing support slots with superstars LAUV and Niall Horan, all well in advance of her debut album.

I’ve been sitting on this episode for a while and waiting for the right moment to release it. What with the government having just announced no extra funding for the industry and suggesting people within the creative industries should retrain, now seems like the time when this episode is more relevant that ever.
Tre Stead has been a tour manager for almost two decades, working with artists like Jessie Ware, Laura Marling, Father John Misty and many others.
When lockdown happened, Tre was on tour with Frank Turner. They had to abandon their tour and head home, not knowing when they would return to work.
As you’ll hear, Tre has since found another job in an entirely different industry and still has no idea when she’ll be able to get back to her career that she’s worked so hard to establish.

On this week’s episode I spoke to dancer and fitness influencer Danielle Peazer. Danielle began her career in ballet and after an injury, pivoted to commercial dance. Having danced for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and on shows such as X factor and the brits, Danielle became one of London’s most sort after dancers.
Danielle has over 1m followers on instagram and her dance content is intrinsic to all she does; Danielle created the Danielle Peazer Method, help tone the body in the same way a professional dancer does through a number of specially curated exercises, while helping people gain confidence and a real achievement along the way.

Daisy specialises in celebrity, music, editorial and commercial styling and has worked to create looks for celebrities including 50 Cent, Ella Eyre, J Hus, Thierry Henry, Jorja Smith, AJ TRACEY, Wretch 32 and Lil Miquela.
Currently Creative Director to British artist's Ella Eyre & Bow anderson. She also has a strong creative eye that can help a brand or artist achieve their goals in the most current, authentic & creative way possible.

Dubbed the Queen of Defected Records, Sam Divine knows everything there is to know about DJing the world's biggest clubs and festivals. She also knows exactly what to play and when to play it. Sam fronts the Defected Radio show and is well and truly the First Lady of the label.
DVINE Sounds, Sam's own record label, champions up and coming artists, propelling them and their music into the spotlight.
And somehow, in between all that, Sam finds time to make and put out her own music. Her remixes of garage anthems 'Flowers' and 'My Desire' are just a couple of her absolute bangers.

Welcome back to Women in Music with Millie Cotton.
Obsessed with Sally Rooney's Normal People on BBC? Me too. I am very excited to share that my first guest for this season Juliet Martin, who soundtracked the show.
Juliet is the founder of Silverstream Music and her experience stretches over a broad range of skills such as publishing, management and music supervision. More recently, Juliet soundtracked Normal People, the adaption of Sally Rooney's hit novel of the same title.
Normal People is a beautifully complicated story of young love and the soundtrack connects us better to that story than ever before.
There's a few familiar bangers from the likes of Frank Ocean and Carly Rae Jepson. Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek is pulled out of the archive and much to some hardcore OC fans dismay, it works exceptionally well in that moment. Many more songs weave through the adaptation, immersing us in prose-rich scenes that aren't articulated on screen.
It's been a busy few months for Juliet Martin and I am *buzzing* that she found time to speak to me about the process of soundtracking such a monumental TV adaption.

Hayley Martine is music supervisor at ITV & soundtracks your favourite TV shows, regularly breaking new artists.
In 2019, Love Island broke Shazam records on five separate occasions.
Previous Women in Music guest Freya Ridings track 'Lost Without You' was played at a pivotal moment on the show and the track became an overnight success.
