Hello everyone, and welcome to our special summer edition of the Yadkin County Public Library podcast!
These episodes help you prepare for the upcoming week’s summer programming options, explaining what programs are available, the activity or craft, and the appropriate age range.
This summer, the national CSLP or Collaborative Summer Learning Program theme is “All Together Now,” so the programs aim to match the theme! “All Together Now” encompasses Kindness, Friendship, and Unity. We are also focusing on helping others and our community members that help us.
Let’s see what our Yadkin County Public Library branch in Yadkinville has to offer for next week of June 26th to June 30th!On Monday, June 26
At 10am we have our school age (recommended ages 5-18, or grades K-12). Yadkin County EMS program. This specific program is in collaboration with our local EMS services and will focus on a variety of information covering safety topics and what EMTs do for our communities. Patrons will also get the opportunity to tour an emergency vehicle and learn about the equipment in them.
On Tuesday, June 27
At 10am we have another school age program, but this time recommended for ages 7 and up, given we have writing and cutting tools being used for different events. This weeks’ program is called Mixed Media Best Friend Portraits. For this program we will be thinking of those who are closest to us, our best friends! During this hour, we will tap into your creative side to create portraits of our best friends. Whether it’s recreating their face or the essence of your friendship, we will be making these unique portraits with the help of a variety of materials. **If you decide to use watercolors or glitter, you may need to dress for a possible mess**.
On Tuesday, June 27
At 3pm we have Kindness Rocks! Rock Garden during the Teen / Young Adult Crafternoon, a program for ages 13 to 18. They will be painting rocks and terra cotta pots with acrylics creating their own kindness gardens. This program will allow each participant to be as creative as they want. And afterwards they will have their own garden that spreads kindness and positivity. **Be sure to wear clothing that can get messy. **
On Wednesday, June 28
At 10am, each Wednesday, we have our paid performers visit. This week’s performer is Captain Jim. He will be doing his Captain Jim is Magic show. Captain Jim isa professional magician who has performed at various venues from state fairs, festivals and libraries. He has a dynamic and fun presence about him, whose act caters to all ages. At 10am, we will have Preschool Storytime with Book Friends as our topic. We will be looking at “friends in fiction”. The craft will involve easy painting, gluing, and glittering of a Winnie the Pooh “hunny” pot. The books that will be covered involve groups of friends such as Sesame Street, Winne the Pooh, Clifford, Elephants and Piggie , Mickey Mouse etc. This program is recommended for ages 2-5, but if older or younger siblings need to attend alongside their siblings, that’s fine. The recommended ages get priority for any supplies.
Later in the day, from 3-5pm, we will have STEAM Club. This program will use STEM toys and manipulatives at individual stations. The STEM toys are rated for ages 3-18+, just be sure to read the recommended age at each station. Adults stay in the room and help supervise their children, as staff will be directing the Makerspace area. This week’s Makerspace topic, fitting the summer theme “of helping the community, helping the world” is entitled Recycle:Crayons. Children ages 5 and up will get the chance to learn about recycling through the process of making new crayons out of old ones. Children will rotate through the Makerspace station, 4 at a time. -

Welcome to the eighth episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library. Each month, we review a work of science fiction and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing the 1979 science fiction novel “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams.
This sci-fi comedy has seen every type of adaptation from radio, to video games and even stage shows. This beloved story begins with Arthur Dent, whose terrible Thursday just became worse as the Earth is just about to be destroyed by aliens to make way for an intergalactic bypass. The scary moment is cut short when his friend, Ford Prefect transports them onto another spaceship. Ford is not of Earth but an alien sent to make updates for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Encyclopedia. Arthur embarks on a journey that will take him across the galaxy to a once forgotten planet with a crew of odd beings. And a very depressed robot!

King Charles III will be crowned this Saturday, May 6, starting 5am EST. Here's a quick rundown of facts and cool things to notice while you're watching the ceremony. Andrea has pulled her inspiration from the review in April on S. J. Bennett's Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series that has Queen Elizabeth II investigating crimes. That series is available in regular print, large print, and audiobook in NC Cardinal. While all the "British royal fever" is circulating, it's a cool thing to read while having fun, especially for readers who find the monarchy fascinating, but don't want to read a nonfiction history book. www.sjbennettbooks.com
This episode is our chance to discuss all the wider British monarchy related topics and people, without stretching the last episode any longer than it was.

Welcome to the seventh episode of Ripples in Space hosted by the Yadkin County Public Library. Each month, we review a new science fiction book, movie or show and discuss major scientific concepts used throughout the story. For this episode, we are reviewing the 2021 science fiction, South Korean Netflix film Space Sweepers directed by Jo Sung-Hee.
Space Sweepers takes an interesting look at the idea of a heavily polluted, nearly uninhabitable Earth in the near future, where those who are considered elite can live on a newly colonized Mars. We follow a ragtag team of misfits who stumble upon a discovery that changes everything.
For this episode we will talk about the movie and my review, the cast members, recommendations for other movies and books that are similar and for a bit of science, take a look at the possibility of a habitable Mars.
Each week, other staff members will be bringing you more topics. Be sure to check back each Wednesday at 1pm for a new episode. So I hinted that something exciting was coming, and the first part is here! Today, we’re tackling a series I’ve had my eye on for a time. It is getting good reviews, has regular print, large print, and audiobook / Audible options; it is in NC Cardinal consortium; and fits with the royal coronation and British-themed murder mysteries we’re tackling in upcoming podcast episodes. *Her Majesty the Queen Investigates* series by S. J. Bennett has 2 books, with the third book coming out in the United States in September 2023.www.sjbennettbooks.com (includes maps to locations mentioned in the books!)
