Brianna Maitland was a smart, independent seventeen year old woman working two jobs and sharing an apartment with a childhood friend. She had dreams of moving out of rural Vermont and experiencing the exciting life of a big city while pursuing a beautiful future. She had some struggles, but had gotten her life together, acquired her GED and was ready for whatever the world had to throw her way.
Five weeks after the infamous disappearance of Maura Murray, on March 19th, 2004, Brianna would leave her night shift at the Black Lantern Inn and drive off into oblivion, never to be seen nor heard from again. Over the night, several witnesses spot her abandoned car, its headlights shining into the road while its rear bumper was smashed into a vacant farmhouse. There was no sign of Brianna and no one would know she was missing for days.
During the investigation, more questions were raised than answered and even the police themselves come under fire for mistakes made early on in the case. Despite hundreds of volunteers, and police man hours, the mystery of what happened to Brianna Maitland remained unsolved. Then, in 2016, some twelve years after her disappearance, the Vermont State Police revealed that they were in possession of DNA recovered from the car which they believe belongs to the likely abductor and murderer.
Did an old rival murder Brianna to protect herself from an assault charge? Did Brianna’s drug dealing friends decide to eliminate her over a debt? Is there any connection between the fate of Maura Murray and Brianna Maitland? Or does the word of a convicted killer’s sister change all the possibilities? Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines the mysterious Vanishing of Brianna Maitland and the sordid list of people she once called friends, among whom may be the person responsible for her disappearance.

Candace Hiltz was a seventeen year old single mother, a junior at Brigham Young University and a newly accepted student to be at Stanford Law School. She dreamed of becoming a Supreme Court Justice. She had a brilliant level of intelligence, a ferociously protective personality and a great affinity for the law.
All of that was destroyed when she was brutally murdered. Her family sought answers, but ultimately discovered that the men charged with solving her murder may have in fact been involved in it. On August 10th, 2006, a Deputy from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado arrived at the Hiltz family home. He questioned Dolores Hiltz in regard to the whereabouts of her son, James. Sometime during the questioning, Dolores’ daughter Candace became angry by his demeanor and told him to leave. The Deputy threatened to arrest Candace, who then threatened to expose him for taking bribes from local drug dealers.
Three days later, the Hiltz family dog went missing. It was later found tied to a tree and had been killed with a hatchet or small ax. Two days later, on August 15th, Dolores left the home to run some errands. She arrived home three hours later and found her granddaughter unsupervised and crying in her crib. There were pools of blood on the floor and drag marks. Dolores made the grisly discovery of Candace’s body. She had been shot multiple times, wrapped in a green comforter and shoved beneath a bed.
The investigation was shoddy from the beginning: The crime scene wasn’t protected and sealed, evidence was left behind and the prime suspect was Candace’s brother, James. After he was apprehended, he was charged with for breaking into a home and stealing some items, but not the murder of his sister. Over the next ten years, no new leads were developed nor evidence discovered. The Hiltz family and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department engaged in a rather public exchange of contradictory statements. Candace’s autopsy showed she had been shot by two to three different weapons and at least two assailants as several shots were projected into her front and back simultaneously.
However, there were several errors and contradictions in the report. Then, out of nowhere, a man who purchased an abandoned storage unit discovered vital pieces of evidence related to the murder which had been stolen from evidence and kept there but the Deputy who ran the entire investigation, the very one who had that altercation with Candace. Theories began to build up accusing the Sheriff’s department of a cover up and even of being complicit in the murder itself. The lead investigator retired amid a torrent of accusations, and just months after, was brought up on charges for his mishandling of evidence as well as tampering with official paperwork.
Was Candace Hiltz murdered in a random act of violence? Did the father of her daughter lash out and take her life? Did her brother James lose control and murder his own sister? Or did the lead investigator play a much more vital role in the very murder he was investigating? Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines the details of this tragic story and tries to follow all of the twists and turns in the Shocking Murder of Candace Hiltz.

Unless you’re absolutely clueless, you know that self-declared Nazis, fascists, Whitesupremacists, and other extremists using a huge range of names, are on the march. Their goal is a race war. They have weapons. They have training. They’re in police forces and militaries. They have media services in Canada, the US, Russia, and elsewhere. They’ve elected their confederates across the world. And their number one ally occupies the White House. Underestimate them at the peril of the planet.
So how do you fight them? And who’s had success doing it?
Today’s guest is a fascinating figure. He’s a former US Air Force man who's spent a lifetime fighting American neo-nazis and was a pioneer of the early internet with innovative online tactics to fight Whitesupremacists. Today, in service of his cause he speaks across the United States. Liberal and conservative journalists try to smear him; Nazis try to fight him in the courts and lose.
Why do they fear him? Because he doxxes them. That is, he exposes the Nazis who are hiding in plain sight by investigating them and revealing their nazi identity to the world. But he also helps those people who want to leave the nazi movement. He fearlessly steps up to fascists such as Richard Spencer and Matthew Heimbach and simply mocks them, and even got Spencer thrown out of CPAC, the Conservative Political Affairs Conference which was teeming with Spencer's own fanatics.

And all this is a 6'4" brother who loves punk music. He's Daryle Lamont Jenkins, one of the founders of the antifascist organisation One People’s Project. And man, does he have great stories to tell.
We spoke by Skype on November 1 and November 8, 2017 while he was on a speaking tour. We discussed:

On episode 15 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan is joined by David Jenkins. Jenkins is the creator and executive producer of the hit television series, PEOPLE OF EARTH, on TBS Network. The show is a gentle and modestly pleasing comedy about a support group for alien abductees, but as we learn in this interview, it's about much more. Jenkins explains the inception of the show, his thorough research into the UFO and abduction phenomenon, and where the show is heading with its second season premiering tonight!
Jenkins doesn't do podcast interviews often, let alone a UFO one, so it was a huge honor to have him on the show. It's also very clear that although the show may be considered a comedy, the heart and compassion brought forward by the creative team behind PEOPLE OF EARTH is palpable, and no matter your beliefs on the alien abduction phenomenon, this is a show worth watching, and a topic worth discussing as we continue to reach further and further out into the cosmos.
Guest Bio: David Jenkins received undergraduate degrees in political science and philosophy from Boston University, and an MFA in acting from New York University. While working as an actor in both New York and Chicago, he began writing plays, eventually founding a theater company called "Human Animals". PEOPLE OF EARTH is his first television project.

Pantsuit Politics Family: We recorded this episode early Sunday morning before much was known about the tragedy at Pulse in Orlando. We will attempt to discuss more about the complexities of this act of terror, hate crime, and mass shooting at another time. For now, our hearts are with every person impacted.
We are emotionally drained this week. In the Pearls, Sarah gets to celebrate the nomination of Hillary Clinton and President Obama's and Elizabeth Warren's endorsements. We then sadly turn our attention to violence in Tel Aviv and Orlando. We applaud the bravery of two Texas valedictorians who used their platforms to discuss our broken immigration system. Then, in The Suit, we discuss the Stanford case as a starting point for talking about rape culture and how we move forward. Finally, in The Heels, we talk about Made in America and how our lives are becoming history.

Katie J.M. Baker is a reporter for BuzzFeed.
“I went to Steubenville a year after the sexual assault to cover their first big football game of the season and I was face-to-face with these people who I had been writing about without knowing much about them. From far away it seems like, do these details matter? Do we care if these people’s lives get messed up when the narrative is so strong, when Steubenville now stands for more awareness around rape culture? But when you’re there, of course it matters. After that piece I realized I didn’t want to blog anymore and I wanted to just focus on reporting.”

Christian Miller, senior investigative reporter at ProPublica, and Ken Armstrong, staff writer at The Marshall Project, co-wrote the Pulitzer-winning article, “An Unbelievable Story of Rape.”
“I won’t forget this: when T. and I talked on the phone and agreed that we were going to work on [“An Unbelievable Story of Rape”] together, T. created a Google Drive site, and we decided we’d both dump all our documents in it. And I remember seeing all the records that T. had gathered in Colorado, and then I dumped all the records that I had gathered in Washington, and it was like each of us had half of a phenomenal story. And in one day, by dumping our notes into a common file, we suddenly had a whole story.”

TW: rape, sexual assault, child sexual abuse
Consent. It’s a given, right? You would just say no if you didn’t want to do something, ‘cause no means no, right? Wrong. Research from Edwards et al., (2014) found that a third of male university students didn’t know what rape was, and would even go so far as to rape a woman if they knew no one would find out. According to RAINN, 75% of rape and sexual assault against women goes unreported. Why? Because 35% of victims were “unclear that it was a crime or that harm was intended” (Department of Justice, 2011). So in a world where Brock Turner can get 6 months in prison for “20 minutes of action”, and Donald Trump, who has 24 individual sexual assault claims against him, is the President of the United States, we think it’s time we had a conversation about consent, and so do our guests.
Up first is Nadia, an academic who has devoted her life to researching gendered violence. She takes us through the harrowing process of the Criminal Justice System and how inaccurate rape myths affect the culpability of victims. (@NadiaWager)
Next is Duncan; victim, survivor, and CEO of Survivors Manchester, an organisation that specialises in sexual assault services for self-identifying men. Duncan narrates his story as a victim of child sexual abuse, and how stereotypical Northern masculinity is contributing to the under reported assaults against men. (@mrmadrigal)
Last is student activist, Susuana. Susuana was instrumental to the country’s first university consent campaign “I Heart Consent”, educating students on the issue and debunking rape myths. She also tells us what a good policy looks like, and how people in authority should be held accountable for their actions. (@Susuana_Xx)

With the Delhi gang rape case in everyone's mind, focus on the specific situation of women in India and India's 'rape culture' were put into perspective by a US case in Steubenville Ohio where an unconscious girl was repeatedly assaulted and onlookers and participants posted images and film all over the internet. If rape happens everywhere, but 'rape culture' is specific to local circumstances, what needs to happen in Australia and everywhere to make it a thing of the past?

This week, we’ll be taking a look at Brandon Teena, including his life, his death, and his overall cultural and legal significance. Brandon Teena was born Teena Renae Brandon on December 12, 1972. Brandon was born a genetic female, and later became a trans man, so for the purposes of this story, we’ll be referring to him by his preferred pronoun, and his chosen name Brandon. Brandon’s life and death, including his eventual rape and murder, was the subject of the Academy Award-winning 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry, written and directed by Kimberly Peirce, and starring Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Brandon. Brandon’s violent death, along with the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998, led to increased lobbying for hate crime laws in the United States.
LifeBrandon was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the younger of two children to Patrick and JoAnn Brandon. His father died in a car accident eight months before he was born, and he was raised by his mother. JoAnn named him, her second child, after their German shepherd dog, Tina Marie. Brandon and his older sister Tammy lived with their maternal grandmother in Lincoln, before they were reclaimed by their mother when Brandon was three years old and Tammy was six. The family resided in the Pine Acre Mobile Home Park in northeast Lincoln, and JoAnn worked as a clerk in a women's retail store in Lincoln to support the family. As young children, Brandon and Tammy were sexually abused by their uncle for several years, with Brandon seeking counseling for this in 1991. JoAnn remarried once from 1975 to 1980, with the marriage failing due to her husband's alcoholism. Brandon’s family described him as being a tomboy since early childhood. He began identifying as male during adolescence and dated a female student during this period. His mother rejected his male identity and continued referring to him as her daughter. On several occasions, Brandon claimed to be intersex, or not fitting the typical binary notions of male or female bodies, though this assertion was later disproved.
Brandon and his sister attended St. Mary's Elementary School and Pius X High School in Lincoln, where Teena was remembered by some as being socially awkward. During his second year, he rejected Christianity after he protested to a priest at Pius X regarding Christian views on abstinence and homosexuality. He also began rebelling at school by violating the school dress-code policy to dress in a more masculine fashion. During the first semester of his senior year, a U.S. Army recruiter visited the high school, encouraging students to enlist in the armed forces. Brandon then enlisted in the United States Army shortly after his eighteenth birthday, and hoped to serve a tour of duty in Operation Desert Shield. However, he failed the written entrance exam by listing his sex as male.
In December 1990, Brandon went to a skate park with his friends, binding his breasts to pass as a boy. The 18-year-old Brandon then went on a date with a 13-year-old girl. He also began regularly dressing as a male. In the months nearing his high school graduation, he became unusually outgoing and was remembered by classmates as a "class clown". He seemingly began coming into his own. Brandon also began skipping school and receiving failing grades, and ultimately was expelled from Pius X High School in June 1991, a mere three days before high school graduation.
In the summer of 1991, Brandon began his first major relationship, with a girl named Heather. Shortly after, he began his first job as a gas station attendant in an attempt to purchase a trailer home for himself and Heather. His mother, however, did not approve of the relationship, and convinced his sister Tammy to follow Brandon in order to know if the relationship was platonic or of a sexual nature.
In January 1992, Brandon underwent a psychiatric evaluation, which concluded that he was suffering from a severe "sexual identity crisis". He was later taken to the Lancaster County Crisis Center to ensure that he was not suicidal. He was released from the center three days later and began attending therapy sessions, sometimes accompanied by his mother or sister. He was reluctant to discuss his sexuality during these sessions but eventually revealed that he had been raped. The counselling sessions ended two weeks later.
In 1993, after some legal trouble, Brandon moved to the Falls City region of Richardson County, Nebraska, where he identified solely as a man. He became friends with several local residents there, and seemed to be settling into his life more. After moving into the home of roommate Lisa Lambert, Brandon began dating Lambert's friend, 19-year-old Lana Tisdel, and began associating with ex-convicts John Lotter and Marvin Nissen.
On December 19, 1993, Brandon was arrested for forging checks and Tisdel paid his bail to get him out. Because Brandon was assigned to the female section of the jail, this is how Tisdel learned that he was transgender. When Tisdel later questioned Brandon about his gender, he told her he was a hermaphrodite pursuing a sex change operation, and they continued dating. In a lawsuit regarding the film adaptation Boys Don't Cry, this was disputed by Tisdel. Brandon’s arrest was ultimately posted in the local paper under his birth name and his acquaintances subsequently learned that he was assigned female at birth…
Sexual assault and murderAround this time immediately after the arrest and the discovery of his birth sex, Brandon attended a Christmas Eve party. At that party, Nissen and Lotter grabbed Teena and forced him to remove his pants, proving to Tisdel that Brandon was anatomically female. Tisdel said nothing and looked only when they forced her to. Lotter and Nissen later assaulted Brandon, and forced him into a car. They drove to an area by a meat-packing plant in Richardson County, where they assaulted and raped him. They then returned to Nissen's home where the two men ordered Brandon to take a shower. He escaped from Nissen's bathroom by climbing out the window, and then went to Tisdel's house. He was convinced by Tisdel to file a police report, though Nissen and Lotter had warned him not to tell the police about the rape or they would "silence him permanently". He also went to the emergency room where a standard rape kit was assembled, but later lost. Sheriff Charles B. Laux questioned him about the rape; reportedly, he seemed especially interested in Brandon’s transsexuality, to the point that Brandon found his questions rude and unnecessary, and refused to answer. Nissen and Lotter learned of the report, and they began to search for him, presumably to make good on their threat to him. They didn’t find him, and three days later, the police found the two, and questioned them. The sheriff declined to have them arrested due to lack of evidence.
Around 1:00 a.m. on December 31, 1993, Nissen and Lotter drove to Lambert's house and broke in. They found Lambert in bed and demanded to know where Brandon was. Lambert refused to tell them. Nissen searched and found him under the bed. The men asked Lambert if there was anyone else in the house, and she replied that Phillip DeVine, who at the time was dating Tisdel's sister, was staying with her. They then shot and killed DeVine, Lambert and Brandon in front of Lambert's toddler. Nissen later testified in court that he noticed that Brandon was twitching after having been shot, and asked Lotter for a knife, with which Nissen stabbed Brandon in the chest, to ensure that he was dead. Nissen and Lotter then left. The two were later tracked down, and arrested and charged with murder.
As the details of the murder surfaced after police questioning, Nissen accused Lotter of committing the murders. In exchange for a reduced sentence, Nissen admitted to being an accessory to the rape and murder. He testified against Lotter and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison. Lotter denied the veracity of Nissen's testimony, and his testimony was discredited. The jury found Lotter guilty of murder and he received the death penalty. Lotter and Nissen both appealed their convictions. In September 2007, Nissen recanted his testimony against Lotter. He claimed that he was the only one to shoot Teena and that Lotter had not committed the murders. In 2009, Lotter's appeal, which used Nissen's new testimony to assert a claim of innocence, was rejected by the Nebraska Supreme Court, which held that since—even under Nissen's revised testimony—both Lotter and Nissen were involved in the murder, the specific identity of the shooter was legally irrelevant. Both were there; both were culpable. In August 2011, a three-judge panel of the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected John Lotter's appeal in a split decision. In October 2011, the Eighth Circuit rejected Lotter's request for a rehearing by the panel or the full Eighth Circuit. Lotter then petitioned the Supreme Court of the United States for a review of his case. The Supreme Court declined to review Lotter's case, denying his petition for writ of certiorari on March 19, 2012, and a further petition for rehearing on April 23, 2012, leaving his conviction to stand, permanently.
Cultural and legal legacyBecause Brandon had neither commenced hormone replacement therapy nor had sex reassignment surgery, he has sometimes been identified as a lesbian by media reporters. However, some reported that he had stated that he planned to have sex reassignment surgery.
