2024: Dare to Hope
New Year Message to Readers

As the ball drops onTimes Square in New York, fireworks light up the Champs-Élysées in Paris, andfake snow falls under the Twin Towers in Nanchang, 2024 has arrived with bangsand whistles. Standing at the prow, looking out at the rough seas ahead, we areboth hopeful and scared, determined and hesitant.
In 4 days, thisnewsletter will be three months old. As we grow out of infancy and into childhood,our readers and contributors are growing alongside us. For us all, then, 2024will be a year of growth.
Growing up is hard,we get it. Growth comes only after an elbow scrape, a sob, and a tear. Growthis a one-way street down a lonely alley, wandering through brambles and fernswith friends that must go away, a home that you must leave behind. Growth iswanting to see every ocean, every mountain, but still caring for every bird,every stretch of grass. Growth is waking up every morning and saying, "Iwon't give up!" Growth is dancing on a volcano while carrying a mountainon your back. Growth is a journey of no return, out of childhood andadolescence into the mysteries of adulthood.
Growth requires thatwe hope for the best but prepare for the worst, reach high but be ready to sinklow, look at the stars but keep your head in the gutter. Sometimes it seemslike growing up is the hardest thing in the world. When getting home past tenafter a 14-hour school day, longer than most working hours in the world, orlooking out the window on your way home from school on a Saturday afternoon atthe happy crowds thronging the city center, it really feels like ours is thehardest "job" in the world.
We hear you; ourhearts are with you. I'm not going to tell you that growing up is easy. Itisn't. Nor will I give you a magic time machine to skip it. Because howeverdifficult it is, no matter how treacherously the path winds, it is an awesomepart of the human way of life. Without it, without the sleepless nights, thebroken hearts, the tears of joy or sadness, you can't experience the full spectrumof emotions life has to offer. Finally, happy New Year and may 2024 treat youkindly!

On English Education in China
Ever since the introduction of English into theChinese curriculum, the question of how to learn, and how to teach English hasbeen hotly debated by officials & educators alike. Now, the time has comefor a revisiting of that decision and perhaps for an alteration of the currentmodel.
Let us firstconsider "history and tradition", or in other words the originalpurpose for Chinese students to learn English. As Chino came out of isolationinto the world with the implementation of the reform and opening up policy bythe top leadership, it became apparent that for Chinese students(and futureadult citizens) to fully integrate with the world, it was necessary to givethem a rudimentary English education That then led, over many years of trialand error, to the model adopted today with English taking up the same amount ofpoints as math and Chinese in the vital college Entrance Exam.
There is nothinginherently wrong with that model. It must be admitted that as the most widelyused language in the world, knowing some English certainly has its uses.However, does it necessitate English to be put on the same pedestal as Chineseand maths? Consider the example of an education system we once claimed toemulate, the United States. Huge gap in student-teacher ratios aside, even themost careful critic would have to admit that the emphasis put on developingcreativity rather than language learning (Spanish. French, and other languageclasses are regarded as electives) was a major contributor to the world acclaimin academia Us. students you might argue that since Americans' mother tongue isEnglish and any foreign language they learn is less consequential, the urgencyis much reduced. Even given that assumption, however, we have a few otherexamples to the effect of confirming that argument.

Present-day leftist thinking is much more diverse than in theepoch of Marx and Lenin. Western traditional democracies, such as the united states and the united kingdom have also experienced left-wing rule. The white house, currently occupied by a Democratic president has pushed through major leftist agendas with their majority in the house and senate such as the IRA( Inflation Reduction Act) the big infrastructure bill, and increased taxes for the well-off. The core of leftist thinking has not changed, higher taxes, more government intervention in the economy, and an ever-larger welfare state. However, the trend of internationalism that flourished in that era has seized to exist. A new great divide is forming and globalization is on the retreat. Meanwhile, the rightwing government hasn't been fairing so well either. The pound had even reached parity with the dollar under the former British prime minister who left office recently before returning to near-normal, making many in London doubt the effectiveness of conservative economic policy and enhancing the odds of a Labor electoral victory in the next General Election

Supply and Demand: A New Prospective
To most people, economics is an abstruse subject that touches little upon their lives. However, at its core, economics is a social science that derives all its complicated models and formulas from an examination of real-life actions by common people. Below I have compiled several instances where classic economic principles are implicated.
Marginal Utility
Have you ever wondered why a one-liter bottle of water only sells for 3 yuan when a 500 mL bottle sets you back 2 yuan? Well, there's simple economic reasoning behind it. The key word here is marginal utility--which can be roughly defined as your craving for the next unit of a good or service. An important property of marginal utility is that is constantly decreasing. In this example, your desire to have one more liter of water decreases as you have more of it. In economics, it is assumed that more is better so even though your desire is diminished, you still want more of whatever it is though you wouldn't want it as much.Thus you would still want to pay more for more water but not as much money as you would for the first 500mL.To fully capitalize on your desire for water, companies price their products along the consumer's utility curve.
Opportunity Cost
Another elemental principle of economics is that the actual cost of something is what you give up for it.Let me give you a for-instance. Say you enjoy doing homework, and you're having trouble deciding which subject's homework to overdo first. What you should contemplate is not what you would gain from doing one piece of homework but what you would lose. So next time your thinking of doing politics homework, remember to take into account what you could have gained by doing math or physics. So this newspaper’s advice to you is that don’t ever do politics homework because the opportunity far outweighs the benefit.
Inflation
There is a myriad of theories involving why and how inflation materializes. However, I'm not here to bore you with a boring lecture on money supply and M2 circulation. So allow me to present you with an example from our everyday student life.I feel sorry for the people who had to copy the questions from our most recent math quiz but pitty aside, I was also intrigued to hear that the number of times they have to copy lines for has doubled since the last punishment was instituted. Why was that I wondered. And here, I wish to offer a version of an explanation that I came up with. My theory is that with time, the value of your copying the questions one time has decreased. And the supply of time you can allocate to producing copies has increased in effect making one worth less in its opportunity cost. Inflation is fueled by an oversized money supply and aggregate demand which is implicated here.
