What in the world would a teenager in Kentucky find to like in Mike Leigh's TOPSY TURVY.
Nothing.
But wait until that young man becomes middle aged and living in the middle of a pandemic when he's desperate not only any exuberance but to also make his $20 Criterion sale purchase in some way not a total loss. What do you get then? A rave review!
And for Tim Robbins doing his version of CRADLE WILL ROCK? Disgust!
A well-rounded episode of 99 FROM 99.

As we near the end of this 99 FROM 99 project we think it's safe to say that we know EXACTLY what it's like to walk THE GREEN MILE. And we do that as we take on THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION Jr. with Frank Darabont once again adapting a Stephen King work for the movies. This time he ditches Tim Robbins for Michael Clarke Duncan as the wrongfully convicted man and makes a substantial upgrade in the prison warden department with America's favorite everyman Tom Hanks.
This film is nice. And this podcast is nice. Enjoy!

It's sexy times on 99 FROM 99... which is quickly ruined when we realize that Tobey Maguire is part of said times. We try not to dismiss THE CIDER HOUSE RULES too much, even if this Oscar contender from 1999 is paired with a mostly forgotten but better film starring Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes. That's right, kids. It's the one you've been waiting for.
It's THE END OF THE AFFAIR.

Woody Allen and Sean Penn seem like a very unlikeable combination so imagine our surprise when this "slight" romantic comedy from the prolific director is mostly charming... and that's thanks mostly to the Academy Award nominated performance here by Samantha Morton.
Does that save us from Film Twitter attacks for covering this? Probably not but then again we are a slight movie podcast that the world mostly ignores. A perfect combination for an episode on SWEET AND LOWDOWN!

The failed Oscar bait in the fall movie season are plentiful but they do not always star the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Julianne Moore like in A MAP OF THE WORLD. They do however usually star Kate Winslet and while this is thankfully not THE READER... it is instead HOLY SMOKE! where Harvey Keitel comes under the sway of this Academy Award chasing actress. Even as she urinates in his general direction. It's 99 FROM 99's finest moment as we discuss Jane Campion and Oprah!

Like the diner scene from HEAT we get Robert De Niro facing off against Philip Seymour Hoffman's female impersonator in a film from a man often (actually only in these show notes) compared to Michael Mann in director Joel Schumacher's FLAWLESS.
It's not bad.
Not great.
But not bad.

We posit that TOY STORY 2 was the beginning of the end for Pixar. It's all doom and gloom for what has been decades of box-office success and critical praise for this company and we knew it over twenty years later!
Mainly one host talks about his dislike of fish and children. It is a definitive podcast for 99 FROM 99.

In this episode we take two trips to hell. One where Arnold Schwarzenegger fights the devil and the other is multiple attempts to watch Ang Lee's RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. All snark aside we weren't that enthused by END OF DAYS either... so basically these show notes are letting you know what a downer the Civil War, the end of the world and most importantly this podcast is. Enjoy!

Back in 1999 James Bond faced a global crisis known as Y2K and maybe Judi Dench being mildly annoyed with him. Today... well, we don't have Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist and the world is just a little dimmer for it.
This podcast is depressing.

One host calls this the greatest film of 1999 and the other is right in his hatred of everything about it... except for that dude from STARSHIP TROOPERS getting attacked by the Headless Horseman.
Ladies and gents... this is Tim Burton's SLEEPY HOLLOW.

Well, it's finally here. We can probably wrap-up this look at the films of 1999 now that we have a thriller starring Bob Hoskins as a cooking enthusiast with mommy issues in FELICIA'S JOURNEY.
It's not as fun as it sounds.

On this episode we search for the father in two very different films. And only ONE of them has a poop monster. Which means that there really is no choice between Pedro Almodovar's ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER and Kevin Smith's DOGMA. Next episode we promise no poop monster. Just Bob Hoskins.

In a time when movie stars headlined TV procedural episodes and Angelina Jolie still had an air of mystery... that is honestly more intriguing than the plot of this film. So instead we throw out our own ideas on who SHOULD HAVE done it. This is as basic as a movie podcast gets. Except this one is slightly better. Enjoy!

We confront our own failures on this episode but when that gets too painful we switch to pointing and laughing at filmmaker Mark Borchard whose struggles to make a short horror film are documented in AMERICAN MOVIE.
Producing this podcast made us laugh and cry. So did the movie. But we are more important. Right, dear listeners?

It may not be the climax we were hoping for with The Year of Taye Diggs, terrorized by a mugging Geoffrey Rush in HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL... but it's still a Taye Diggs movie so that's not nothing. We try to keep this from being a repeat of our earlier discussion of fellow 1999 haunted house remake THE HAUNTING but forgive us for not keeping up with our own continuity. But you can! By downloading EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE. AGAIN. Thanks!
