Diagnosed with a learning disability in kindergarten, Michelle faced academic and social struggles early on—and was often told what she couldn’t do.

Her writing has appeared in The Mighty, Non-Verbal Learning Project, Dyscalculia Blog, The Reluctant Spoonie, Kalopina Collective, Imagine the World as One Magazine, and Word Gathering, where her photography has also been featured.

  • Maura Casey, an award-winning journalist with a four-decade career writing opinion for major newspapers—including The New York Times—joins us to share her powerful story of survival, sobriety, and healing from growing up in an alcoholic home. The first in her family to get sober, Maura has maintained her sobriety for 39 years, despite the chaos of her father’s drinking and the deep impact of her sister Ellen’s life-threatening illness.

In this episode, Maura discusses her upcoming book, Saving Ellen: A Memoir of Hope and Recovery (Skyhorse Publishing, April 1, 2025), which details her family’s journey through her sister Ellen’s kidney disease, her mother’s determination to donate a kidney in the 1960s, and the immense stress that came with her father’s alcoholism. She shares how Ellen was one of only two living donor transplants in Buffalo that year due to the lack of advanced medical technology, and how she conducted in-depth research, speaking with Ellen’s doctor, Mary Hawking, and her mother’s friends, to piece together this powerful story.

Beyond the family’s struggles, Maura’s memoir also explores broader family dynamics, the challenges of setting boundaries with loved ones who threaten sobriety, and her personal journey of healing. She reflects on the resilience it took to break free from dysfunction and the hope that recovery offers. If we’re on camera, she’ll even show us the stacks of diaries she used to write her memoir!

  • In this episode, Lee S. Varon, LICSW, a social worker, writer, and author of My Brother is Not a Monster: A Story of Addiction and Recovery and A Kids Book About Overdose, joins us to discuss the impact of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) on siblings, especially those who do not struggle with addiction themselves. Lee shares her personal experiences growing up with a family member who had SUD and how it shaped her approach to working with families impacted by addiction.

Lee’s conversation highlights the important yet often overlooked topic of how SUD affects everyone in the family, especially young children and siblings who are left to navigate the chaos. She emphasizes the importance of open communication, setting aside time for children without SUD, encouraging their individual pursuits, and ensuring they have support and a space to share their concerns. Lee also offers practical advice on how parents can create balance in the home and provide a safe, supportive environment for all their children.

    Key Takeaways:

Clear Communication: Explain the family situation to children in age-appropriate terms, being open about what’s happening without shying away from difficult conversations.Make Time for Children Without SUD: Despite the focus on addiction, it's essential to carve out moments to spend with children who are not struggling with SUD to ensure they feel seen and heard.Encourage Individual Pursuits: Support hobbies, goals, and interests outside of the addiction dynamic to help children feel empowered and valued.Listen and Support: Actively listen to children’s concerns, both about their sibling with SUD and their own lives. Ensure therapy or support groups are available to them for processing emotions.

Lee's work continues to help families affected by SUD, and her books serve as a valuable resource for facilitating tough conversations.

  • In this episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction: Thriving After Chaos, we’re diving deep into one of the most important aspects of healing and self-discovery—authenticity. Many of us grew up in environments where we had to suppress our true selves to survive. But as adults, we have the power to reclaim our authenticity and live in alignment with who we truly are.

So, how do you know if you're living authentically? I’m sharing 10 powerful questions that will help you reflect on your choices, relationships, and overall well-being. Grab a journal, take a deep breath, and let's explore:

1️⃣ Am I making decisions based on my true desires, or am I trying to meet others' expectations?

2️⃣ Do I feel a sense of peace and fulfillment with the way I live my life?

3️⃣ When was the last time I felt truly alive? What was I doing?

4️⃣ Do I say “yes” to things I don’t want to do just to avoid disappointing others?

5️⃣ Am I surrounded by people who accept and support the real me?

6️⃣ Do I set and uphold boundaries that protect my energy and well-being?

7️⃣ If I had no fear of judgment or failure, what would I do differently?

8️⃣ Do I feel more energized or drained by my daily life and commitments?

9️⃣ Do I trust and follow my intuition, even when it goes against logic or outside opinions?

🔟 If I keep living the way I am now, will I feel proud and fulfilled 10 years from today?

If you find yourself answering "no" to many of these, it’s okay! Awareness is the first step. In this episode, I’ll also share practical ways to shift toward a more aligned, fulfilling, and authentic life—one where you no longer feel the need to shrink, please, or conform.

Let’s break free from the past and step fully into who we were always meant to be. 💙

  • In this deeply moving episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction: Thriving After Chaos, I sit down with writer and poet Dana K, whose journey through grief and healing is both heartbreaking and inspiring. After losing her brother, Arman, to suicide, Dana was forced to confront not only his absence but also the trauma she had carried since childhood. Growing up in a home with narcissistic parents, she endured emotional neglect and manipulation, leaving deep scars that remained unaddressed—until Arman’s passing became the catalyst for her healing.

Dana shares how grief unraveled years of unresolved pain and how she found solace in therapy, self-reflection, and writing. Her debut book, FIVE A.M. The Silence After Goodbye, is a raw and beautiful tribute to her brother, transforming loss into poetry and pain into art. In this episode, we explore the tangled web of trauma, self-discovery, and the power of creative expression in the healing process.

If you’ve ever struggled with loss, childhood wounds, or finding a way to process deep emotions, this conversation will resonate with you. Join us as we discuss the journey of grief, the complexities of healing, and how honoring our past can help us reclaim our future.

  • In this episode, we sit down with Melanie, a purple-haired, tattooed, punk-rock-loving Jewish mama from Brooklyn, whose journey is as bold and inspiring as her personality. Growing up as the daughter of a chemical engineer—both an applied physicist and an addict who sold drugs—Melanie lived in a world shaped by duality. Competitive gymnastics became her escape, providing the structure and discipline missing at home.

But after leaving the sport, food became her coping mechanism, leading to a 70-pound weight gain. It wasn’t until her 30s that Melanie began her healing journey, shedding not just the weight but the emotional clutter tied to her family's cycles of addiction.

Now, with over 20 years of experience as a weight loss coach, Melanie helps others break free from their own patterns by embracing the art of clutter-free living—mentally, emotionally, digitally, and physically. • In this episode, we’re joined by the remarkable Alma Collins Thomas, a true testament to the strength of the human spirit. Alma’s journey is one of incredible resilience, facing overwhelming adversity and coming out stronger on the other side. From a devastating personal loss to surviving a massive stroke, Alma has experienced challenges that would stop many in their tracks. Yet, through it all, she has continued to inspire others, even from her hospital bed.

Alma’s story begins with the unimaginable loss of her son, Tysean, in 2009, a heartbreaking event that sparked her passion for storytelling. She channeled this grief into her two powerful books, Dream Killers and From the Waiting Room to the Recovery Room, which offer both a window into her journey and a roadmap for others facing adversity. But Alma’s trials didn’t stop there—she also faced a devastating fire that left her temporarily homeless, a difficult divorce, and financial struggles linked to her husband’s battle with substance abuse.

Then, just a few years ago, Alma suffered a debilitating stroke that left her right side paralyzed. But even in the midst of this battle, Alma refused to give up. Rather than letting the stroke define her, she found renewed purpose in helping others overcome their own challenges. Alma shares her belief in the power of resilience, advocating for the importance of perseverance, embracing what we can’t control, and recognizing our inner strengths.

In this deeply inspiring episode, Alma talks about her experiences as an ordained minister, educator, motivational speaker, and author. She shares how she continues to motivate others from her hospital bed and why she’s dedicated to helping others push through life’s most difficult circumstances. If you’re looking for motivation, strength, and a story that proves we can overcome anything, this episode is one you won’t want to miss.

Tune in for an uplifting conversation with Alma Thomas—a woman who not only survived but is thriving, inspiring, and changing lives one story at a time.
