Experiencing occasional anxiety is part of normal life. When anxiety is becoming part of an everyday life inhibiting us from living life with ease, calm and happiness it is something that needs to be attended. Anxiety is becoming an increasingly major health issue in our modern society. With the increased exposure to social media, news sources and remote work, anxiety becomes a health issue more than ever.
There are different types of anxiety from social anxiety to more specific phobias.
In Chinese Medicine, anxiety taxes the heart first then the kidney and the lungs. Anxiety like any other stressor is the root cause for premature aging and inflammation in the body. In summer there's an emphasis on heart health in Traditional Chinese Medicine. What does it mean and what practices (physical and mental, or as we say in Chinese Wai Dan or Nei Dan), will support a healthy heart?
The heart is the fire element in Chinese Medicine. We want this fire to warm us up and nourish our internal organs, but too much fire will create inflammation and multiple medical problems.
Issues with the heart can be physical, like an issue of high blood pressure, low energy or multiple other heart issues. Or it could be how we process life emotionally. Different people process life events differently than others.
Emotions like anxiety, anger and over-excitement will generate too much fire leading to imbalanced fire condition. Indifference and depression is on the other side of the spectrum. Can we change our emotions using certain Qi Gong techniques?

Did you know that heart issues and heart attack is the number 'two' killer in the US? Understanding the energetic role of the heart from a Chinese Medicine perspective will help us to adopt a lifestyle that will heal and protect the most important organ in Chinese Medicine.
The heart is the fire element in Chinese Medicine. It is considered the ruler, like a benevolent and enlightened monarch it is all knowing and ever present, sharing wisdom for the good of the whole. Your Fire aspect represents fulfillment, the full extent of our expansion, personal development and maturation. The Heart also houses your spirit through the distribution of blood in the body.
The flow of blood nurtures the body and serves as a vehicle for communication. It permeates the body with consciousness sensation and feeling. When the fire in your house is balanced it will warm your house (like fire in the the fireplace). Balanced fire in the heart means your spirit is strong this reflects in a person emotional expression, presence of mind, the brightness of the eyes and the lustrous complexion. It will also reflect in high ability to focus, not to be distracted.
When fire is out of balance it will burn your house and turn things into ashes. It will dry your lungs, creates inflammation and wreak havoc. At the same time, not enough heart fire can lead you into depression. Some of the side effects of an imbalanced heart will be incessant talking, disturbing dreams, insomnia, easily overheating, hot flashes, craving stimulation, restlessness and more.

Our life today is similar to our life two weeks ago in terms of our sleep pattern, eating habits, energy levels, thought pattern, etc...
What would it take to change the status quo in order to have a calmer day, a more creative one, deeper sleep and a more energetic life?
When we are going through our day, our brain is in auto-pilot, processing information based on its ingrained habit patterns. The brain in the default state is -- what we call in Western science -- in high Beta waves. As we experience a mild chronic stress throughout the day we are in no place to change our routine and thinking outside of the box is somewhat limited.
In order to 'call back your original Qi/energy' and create a sustainable change to your livelihood, you need to do two things:
1. Create more energetic space: get out of the Beta brain wave state at least once every day. This will get you out of that mild stress and bring you into the present moment. When you're not in Beta brain waves, you can see things in a different light (because you're not in survival mode anymore) and have the energy required for step number two.
2. You need to actively detect when your mind is occupied with energy that is not supporting your well-being and change your habit. And then change your mind habit pattern

You don't have to be a health fanatic to be healthy happy and successful. You can set yourself up with just a few habits to ensure a healthy long life!
According to research few of the most important things to incorporate in your life to ensure this: healthy sleep, reduce stress and a solid morning routine.
The interesting thing is that when we have a good solid morning routine, it allows you to take this energy into a day full of energy and positivism. If you go to bed feeling accomplished and content, your sleep is going to be healthy as well.
The morning is the birth of the day and like a birth of a baby where the first few years are most important to the character and health of the child, the first hour in the morning will determine the flow of the day.
So what are the Six Steps for a solid morning routine through which you can experience energy and positiveness the whole day (even if you woke up grumpy)? :)
Before I reveal them, let me just say that a morning routine can take between 5 minutes and one hour, and it really depends on the person and how much time you have. It can fluctuate in terms of the time allocation, but keeping it close to the same amount of time, daily is best.

We rarely think about the health of our internal organs as something that can affect our state of mind, our sleep and our physical vitality. However, in Chinese Medicine, the harmonious nature in the way our internal organs function plays a huge role in the quality of our life and our longevity. Just last week, I talked with a friend who used to wake up every night at 4 am and couldn't get a long, healthy sleep. My recommendation for some liver support supplements finally helped him to not wake up at 4am for the first time in years. The liver also determines your joint health and emotional swings. Have you ever noticed how emotional swings are more emphasized in people who drink alcohol, or that are drunk? Alcohol puts a lot of stress on the liver and that compromises the ability of the liver to smooth out the emotions. Every internal organ is related to a different physical, emotional and spiritual aspect of our being. That's why healing the internal organs and the harmony connections between them means treats many, many root problems in the body, mind and spirit! I get a lot of emails from subscribers having a hard time incorporating a mind-body practice like Qi Gong into their daily routine. When it comes to incorporating new routines (and changing existing), our brain is our own worst enemy. We don't seem to have time, we are tired, we doubt the practice... Our brain comes up with with anything and everything to have us not change our routine. It seems very hard to change the habit pattern of the mind! Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be very lucky in life and others seem to have a lot of struggles? Is luck a type of energy that can be cultivated and practiced?
Try to bring into your mind a time where you felt lucky or that things were going surprisingly well. That moment when you feel that progression and growth in your life is going in the right direction. I'll tell you a secret -- it really didn't come out of the blue and you and your energy had everything to do with it!
Luck is a type of Qi that can be cultivated, understood and practiced. In fact it's a huge subject underlining our aspirations, desires, reactions and expectations.
One thing I know for sure is when I started to practice Qi Gong and Meditation regularly things in my life started to go more smoothly with less effort. It seems like my heart wishes and desired are finally being heard by 'someone'. Blessings and gifts started to show up for me. We are the ones that can open the door into our own luck or be the obstacle from allowing blessings to come into our lives.
Your own openness to what you want and bringing it into your life also relates to the smoothness of Qi that runs in your mind and body. That's the job of the liver -- the organ that is related to the Spring season.

Spring days are called Fa-Chen, meaning: to emit, to release, to give birth to, to aim and give away. An outward movement, so to speak.
It is time to be gradually more active, physically and intentionally mentally. Yet, relaxed, not tense or stressed. It is very healthy during this time of year to start take action toward our goals and our vision to our future selves. This will be very healthy for the liver!
As good as we nourished our kidneys in the winter, our liver -- the active organ of the spring -- will be strong and protect us in the Spring.
The active organ pair this season is the liver and gallbladder. Which means that we have to protect them this season.
Physically, the liver protects our eyesight, our tendons and ligaments. It helps with blood flow and digestion. Spiritually, the liver helps with mental clarity towards our direction in life while giving us mental flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.
Problems with liver will be associated with eyesight problems, migraines, stiffness, change resistance, being short tempered, angry and moody.

Sometimes world events can take an emotional and energetic toll on your health and well being. This one is sneaky! Even just getting upset while reading the news can be draining energetically, no matter what your viewpoint is.
It's not bad to feel anger or sadness over things that are happening. But, we need to know how to transform that negativity! Otherwise we create internal stagnation.
In Taoist thinking, yin and yang are always in state of flow and transformation. Flowers can't grow and bloom without the storm that came before. Peace is achieved after we learn the heavy price of war. Happiness cannot be experienced if we don't know what sadness is. Chaos will always bring new calm and order.
That's how things flow into each other. And will continue to do that in all aspects of life. The question is how do we become masters at transforming energy!
When we are in resistance to what comes our way we are not allowing this natural transformation to occur. This is about understanding how to improve the quality of your Qi which is related to your emotional state.

I remember my first introduction to Qi Gong, I was participating in a day long workshop and before we started the teacher invited some members from the crowd that were practicing Qi Gong for awhile and they shared their healing stories. I won't forget the woman that had stage 4 cancer who doctors gave 6 months to live -- and in three months of a certain Qi Gong practice she healed herself...in three months, and COMPLETELY! There were many other stories similar to this. I was beyond intrigued and looked forward to understanding what creates such a strong healing response? My journey began! Since I just came back from a vacation where I was surrounded by nature all of the time, I wanted to talk about an interesting Taoist practice that is very healing. This one very interesting practice is about enhancing life and your energy level, and has to do with absorbing Qi from the environment. Does this sound weird? Can you imagine if you could tap into the energy of the sun or the ocean? We are always surrounded with abundant of energy, yet often feel isolated and separated from nature. At the same time, we do sometimes feel the energy of our surroundings. Remember a place where you felt good or other places that felt not nourishing to you. Like maybe a beautiful plaza in the center of town where you felt good or on a top of a hill where you felt energized. In this Qi Talk we will chat about how to start the process of this ancient practice of harnessing energy from nature as a way of creating stronger mind body and spirit!
